Culross = coo-Riss
Cockburn = co-burn
Ecclefechan = eck-el-feck-Han
Culzean = Kull-ane
Garioch = gee-ree
Kirkcudbright = Kir-coo-bray
Menzies = Ming-is

And 100s more

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/07/2023 00:18

I live in Keynsham....pronounced Cane Shum.

Heurgh · 12/07/2023 00:52

Welcome to Herefordshire, where you can visit Leominster (Lem-ster), Weobley (Webbly), but confusingly, St Weonard's (St Wonnards),

Sugarfree23 · 12/07/2023 01:13

Much of it has to be because of influences from other languages and dialects.

English is just a confusing language.

There are the obvious
Go and read a book.
I read that book.

And the less obvious
Go make a record.
Listen to the record.

The cable is live
You might not live if you touch it.

I always think invasion during WW2 would have fallen at the first hurdle.

German to local "is this Me Opem"
Local: "no mate it's Mepam (Meopham) shoot him lads"

This confuses me

In Kent Meopham is pronounced mepam

In Norfolk Deopham is pronounced deefam

AngeloMysterioso · 12/07/2023 03:02

Southwark- sutherk
Streatham - strettam
Shipbourne- shibben
Meopham- meppam
Cholmondeley- chumly
Mainwaring- mannering
Beaulieu - bewly
Norwich - norrich

What'sthe difference between the two record ones?

I'd say rec-ord for both, which one is re-cord?

I’m nearby and have friends from there. I’ve only ever heard it called Suthall by locals, never anything else.

Are they originally from there or did they move there? Also… sorry to ask but how posh are your friends? Grin

The shall we say proper local people will always say South well - Google it and lots of debate about this.

MagpiePi · 12/07/2023 07:21

Listening to an American trying to pronounce Warwickshire was quite amusing.

War-wik-shy-er instead of worick-sher.

And don't tell them about Worcestershire Sauce!

HelpMeGetThrough · 12/07/2023 07:31

Restronguet in Cornwall.

That gets interesting if non-locals ask for directions.

Bemyclementine · 11/07/2023 20:51

I live in Norfolk. It's a minefield.

Happisburgh = Haze-bruh
Wymondham = Windum.

And so on.

Burgh

burrah

The Althorp estate in Northamptonshire (Princess Diana's resting place) is pronounced all-trup.

Locals call the Walworth road in South London the Wharf Road. And why Suffuck,instead of South-Wark?

I lived and worked in Walworth in Southwark and it’s pronounced Walworth Road. They just shorten it to slang.

PemQueen · 12/07/2023 07:36

And yet Burgh-by-Sands in Cumbria is Bruff.

RoseBucket · 12/07/2023 07:36

Although Southwark isn’t pronounced South Wark!

RoseBucket · 12/07/2023 07:37

Sorry Sufffuck 😂 Suthuck

Because that’s South East London pronunciation

CherryCokeFanatic · 12/07/2023 07:50

So can we now say things like my Belvoir is sweaty lol

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 12/07/2023 07:53

Know how to pronounce Belvoir as have stayed near there but was a surprise first time I heard it!

loislovesstewie · 12/07/2023 07:56

Hardenhuish is Harnish, it's in Wiltshire . But I always knew how to pronounce Belvoir.

Spanielsarepainless · 12/07/2023 07:58

In Devon, Woolfardisworthy is Woolsery. The simple version is even on road signs.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/07/2023 08:03

My favourite is Woolfardisworthy (Woolsery) in Devon.

And of course Beauchamp (Beecham)

BlackeyedSusan · 12/07/2023 08:07

Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2023 20:58

Rainworth = Ranneth

Depends. Some call it Rennuth, some call it Rainworth. see also Blidworth and Blidduth. Had relatives there.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/07/2023 08:12

OldBeller · 11/07/2023 21:45

Yes, you can tell someone isn't from Leicester if they ask where Bell-voir Street is. Easy mistake though.

There's also a common legend around these parts that there was an Australian who asked the way to Lougabarougah (Loughborough). They sometimes announce it on the trains as Lougabarougah for fun.

BBC Radio Nottingham used to do that too.

Looga brooguh.

BoredofPotatoes · 12/07/2023 08:20

Marylebone - Marlebone

MurielThrockmorton · 12/07/2023 08:22

Stivichall - Sty-chall

Cheylesmore - Charles-more
