Do you mean Belvoir is pronounced beaver? It's a place in Nottinghamshire / Leicestershire.
I dont get the advertising reference?

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/07/2023 20:37

I am still shocked by this every time I buy some of their lovely drinks.

AfingeroffudgeisNOTenough · 11/07/2023 20:37

Yep - area of Belfast too, so I knew the correct pronunciation.

Vitriolinsanity · 11/07/2023 20:39

We have Wrotham (Rootem) and Broadditch (Braditch).

I love British place names.

Also Magdalen (Maudlin) College.

poorbuthappy · 11/07/2023 20:40

I only know this from Jilly Cooper

QuillBill · 11/07/2023 20:46

Whoever built the castle in the 11th century. That's whose fault it is.

NoStockingsNoSoxes · 11/07/2023 20:47

See also: Belvoir Castle.

NatTheGnat · 11/07/2023 20:47

I also know it from growing up near Belfast. It's pronounced beaver there too

I had to read this three times to get it because I was reading it 'beaver is meant to be beaver' over and over. My brain doesn't see it as bel-voir so I was stumped.

Bemyclementine · 11/07/2023 20:51

I live in Norfolk. It's a minefield.

Happisburgh = Haze-bruh
Wymondham = Windum.

And so on.

Fluffy24 · 11/07/2023 20:55

Ooh and then there's Towcester = toaster!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 11/07/2023 20:57

What do you mean meant to be? That's how you say it, what's it gotto do with advertising. I don't get it

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 11/07/2023 20:57

I also live in Norfolk, my favourite is little hautbois, which is pronounced little hobbis.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2023 20:58

Gate-acre is 'gatakur'

Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2023 20:58

Rainworth = Ranneth

RoseBucket · 11/07/2023 21:00

Except the letting agent Belvoir. (Bell Voir) also HQ based in Grantham, near Belvoir (Beaver) castle.

NatTheGnat · 11/07/2023 21:01

Cockburn Street in Edinburgh = co-burn street

Rubycoola · 11/07/2023 21:02

@poorbuthappy me too!

Beaulieu - Bewley. Not Bow Le Uh.

LBHSisgreat · 11/07/2023 21:02

You don't want to start with Cholmondeley then...

cocksstrideintheevening · 11/07/2023 21:02

Cockburn street is another classic.

I just assumed about belvoir.

I'm sure there are plenty more!

BeaLola · 11/07/2023 21:03

My friend who lives in Kent says the village near her spelt Trottiscliffe is pronounced "Trosley"

Hillsareyourfriends · 11/07/2023 21:03

Southwell - suth-all
Blidworth - blid-rth
Beauchief - bee-cheif

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/07/2023 21:06

Yes / my granny used to play golf at Belvoir golf course in Belfast which I always found amusing when I was a girl. I don't think beavers would be welcome at a golf club

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/07/2023 21:06

I never know about Cockburn Blush

Bringonthepitchforks · 11/07/2023 21:07

LBHSisgreat · 11/07/2023 21:02

Chumbley

Beauchamp (as is the Dr off casualty) is Beecham not bow-shomp
