Why would someone like Judy Dench…

Do shit TV adverts for money comparison sites. I don’t get it. She’s worth £45m. She’s a ‘national icon’. A dame! Why would you bother? It’s perplexes me

OP posts:

And this thread is proof that mumsnetters can pick a fight over just about anything.

Absolutely - some of the responses are deliberate petulance on steroids. I’m sure up and down the country people have mildly pondered what Dame Judi Dench - one of Britain’s leading Shakespearean actors and greatest living actors is doing in a naff commercial. It’s not an unreasonable question at all and jeez, the frothing posts to ‘a mild pondering’… I think the weather is making folks a bit mental.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 01/07/2023 14:43

Sick of seeing her on TV adverts. One of the rudest and most unpleasant people I have ever worked with within the show business industry. Can’t understand the cult adoration for her or Miriam Margoyles. Both deeply awful women.

This thread is a prime example of all that is wrong with the internet and social media. The op asked a perfectly reasonable and normal question but has had some truly bizarre reactions.

I've been thinking of taking a break from all things online... And this has helped make up my mind.

Jealousy??? Why because someone mused on why a well known actress would do a naff and???

I think possibly they're partly referring to the poster mumthreegirlies who made a sexist and ageist comment about menopause. Unbelievable really!

Salome61 · 01/07/2023 14:46

I was upset to see a celebrity I'd previously admired doing a gambling advert. I know people who spent their food money on their tv gambling addiction, I don't agree with it.

Now that is strange to read, she’s very well renowned for being the exact opposite of this. Don’t know about MM but Judi is said to be very gracious and funny.

LadyBird1973 · 01/07/2023 14:55

I don't judge actors who do adverts for comparison sites or just eat etc. But I do judge those who sell insurance/funeral plans etc to elderly people. I feel they play on peoples fears and guilt, whereas a comparison site is just selling car insurance or something that isn't emotive.

I imagine it's hard to turn down lots of money for minimal work, which is probably why she does it.

MagnificentMagnolia · 01/07/2023 14:59

Well, if she pays her taxes at least 45% of the fee goes to the government and would be used supposedly for our general benefit. It is a question I've mused on previously, not particularly in regard to Judi Dench though. For me, it does seem to cheapen the well-respected person involved. I came to the conclusion that everyone likes getting more money , however rich you are! She os probably thinking of security for her family. Also it will give her a boost to know she is still relevant and in demand. Good luck to her.

PlatBilledDuckypuss · 01/07/2023 15:13

She's an actor. It's her job.

JamieFrasersfurrysporran · 01/07/2023 15:26

SirChenjins · 01/07/2023 12:19

I read it was because she’s a Mumsnetter and after seeing some of Yeahyeahno’s other posts she decided to wind her up by doing that ad.

🤣🤣

Minou123 'The real question is why does ths bother you?'

FFS.
No, I think it should be why are you and others taking the random musings of the OP so seriously? OP is talking about an actress in an advert not world hunger. Not sure how some people get through the day if they think this trivial question is 'nasty' and warrants such a serious response. It makes me wonder how they react to life's real serious and nasty stuff.
Jeeeeesus wept.

Jeeeeesus wept.

The Op wrote Why would you bother?

I answered the question.

I didn't say anything nasty to the Op.
All I asked was why it bothered her that JD did advert (you know a random musing) And the Op answered.

I wasn't rude, I didn't swear. I didn't write "Jeeeeesus wept" I didn't call the Op names.

shadypines · 01/07/2023 18:34

Minou123 That's thing though, if you read the OP she didn't say it bothered her. She said she was perplexed.
You decided she was 'bothered' and then you pointedly asked the question! Turning her musing chat into something to create about. Apologies for my terrible language it was not directed at you but the general rumblings. Yet another trivial thread being crow barred into 'why do you care ? etc etc. It isn't necessary. The OP is allowed to wonder. Sometimes I want to open MN and see what people are pondering on without it turning on a knife edge. It gets silly and tiresome.
I will change it to 'oh for Pete's sake'.

Source of her awfulness?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/07/2023 21:15

@Whataretheodds , you saved me from saying it - thanks!

Source of her awfulness?

Source? Working directly with her in both theatre and TV. Gracious and polite to those who have value to her, producer/director etc. Anyone below her , dressers, runners, AP’s, have seen her be totally rude and dismissive to them, the turn on a sixpence when anyone semi important breezes by.

If you throw her name into Google you'll get the answer of 45 milllion dollars (not pounds, but as we've already established the OP is not a details fiend) from "Celebrity Net Worth dot com", or 35 million dollars from another site, or 245 million dollars from another site which believes her to be a particularly canny investor.

All pretty much back of the envelope bollocks. The Sunday Times Rich List has got a decent amount of research behind it, but everything south of that is just dart-throwing click bait.

Yeahyeahno · 02/07/2023 00:37

@WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsBack Judi (y) is that you?!

OP posts:
WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsBack · 02/07/2023 00:45

Tragically not (although tbf I wouldn't swap the difference in our ages for any valuation of her wealth).
But SSD implied a question, I like a number and I have a healthy disregard for "what is celebrity X Worth?" websites.

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 02/07/2023 06:50

She has lost most of her vision to macular degeneration and I imagine many traditional retirement activities are therefore not easily accessible to her as they might otherwise be. She also presumably loves her work and wants to keep busy. I’m sure the money is nice but I think it’s unlikely to be her sole motivation.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/07/2023 06:55

It's pretty embarrassing. Obviously she couldn't give a stuff what I or anybody else thinks but it definitely cheapens her somehow.

Reminds me of Sting and his advert for a luxury car brand, might have been Jaguar.

I’ve met her several times and had completely the opposite impression. I was someone “below” her and she was always polite and friendly. I’d be very surprised if this is true.

radiatorpipe · 02/07/2023 07:00

There's always room for more money!

Ladybug14 · 02/07/2023 07:02

I've read that Judi Dench isn't well.

Perhaps doing easy bits and bobs of work here and there helps take her mind off everything?

Ladybug14 · 02/07/2023 07:05

Macula Degeneration. That's it. Mum had that too. Its difficult for Judi to see, now, so learning lots of lines is more challenging, Google says.

Perhaps THAT is why she chooses different work?
