Do shit TV adverts for money comparison sites. I don’t get it. She’s worth £45m. She’s a ‘national icon’. A dame! Why would you bother? It’s perplexes me

This. She did a documentary with Louis Theroux recently. Her beautiful house was bought with the proceeds from an advert many years ago . She was a well known actress then. She is almost blind. She has to have someone read her scripts to her so she can learn her lines. Presumably an advert is not many lines, a lovely day with young actors and pots of cash. Why wouldn't you. My husband is retired. He works as a consultant when he feels like it. A ten minute phone call will earn him £500.He doesn't need the money,its interesting and fun.

I don’t think you’re being shit about her OP, I’ve wondered the same thing when I see the adverts. For me it’s, why would someone as high profile, talented, experienced as Dame Judy want to do shitty ads.. But as others have said there could be many reasons, she dosnt want to give up work, so the ads tick the box of reducing work hours, covering tax bills as someone else said, it’s fun, she actually believes in what she’s selling, she has a plan to leave as much money behind as possible.

Lots of Hollywood actors apparently get paid a fortune to do advertising in Asia.

Personally I’d like to see already rich and famous people stop getting big bucks to for adverts and regular everyday people getting the jobs.

When do you decide that you have 'enough' money?

If someone offered you a ton of cash for maybe half a day's work, would you say no because you already had 'enough' money?

I'm with you, OP. It always used to be that Hollywood stars would sneak off to Japan and do awful cheesy adverts for Japanese products safe in the knowledge they'd never be seen on American or European TV. They understood that being associated with something so naff would take the shine off their image/ reputation.

Judi Dench has always taken the classy route, so it's sad to see her selling out at this stage of a successful and prestigious career. Miriam Margolyes, on the other hand, will do or say anything if there's money in it. She said so herself on the radio only the other day: the only thing that matters is to keep making money.

The one who annoys me is Kevin Whately, "Lewis". A much loved and trusted TV star advertising equity release, which is rarely suitable for the elderly people it's aimed at. At least Judi Dench isn't exploiting people.

I have to say that anyone who buys something simply because a (paid) celebrity is doing their advert needs help. However this obviously is very common which is why celebs are still paid to flog goods and services. Can't blame them for taking advantage of the gullible.

You are allowed. But is it REALLY that unbelievable/shocking that someone in their 80s who cant read scripts any more might still want an income coming in? I mean, seems pretty obvious to me, hardly that surprising or baffling.

I very much doubt that anyone uses MSM "because Judi Dench advertises them". But the fact that the M figure in the adverts is played by Actual Judi Dench is what makes them memorable, and catches the eye. If the boss role was played by a random older person then it probably wouldn't be so sticky.

Hundreds of thousands of people will come away from that advert knowing that there is a company out there called Money Supermarket that does price comparisons on a range of services.

The next time they need insurance/broadband then that name may come to their fingers, especially if they hate Meerkats / Welsh opera singers.

This thread is a prime example of all that is wrong with the internet and social media. The op asked a perfectly reasonable and normal question but has had some truly bizarre reactions.
