Why would someone like Judy Dench…

Do shit TV adverts for money comparison sites. I don’t get it. She’s worth £45m. She’s a ‘national icon’. A dame! Why would you bother? It’s perplexes me

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 01/07/2023 11:58

I have heard her say that, all her working life, she’s been terrified of being out of work. I bet that doesn’t go away, even if you get rich and famous.

I’d listen to her read the phone book out.

Watercoloursky · 01/07/2023 12:00

I read in an interview a while back that her sight is deteriorating quite badly - so I imagine adverts are an easier way to remain acting than doing film/theatre/TV dramas etc? Less to learn scriptwise (if reading is now difficult), fewer sets to navigate, only a day or so's commitment, etc?

monicagellerbing · 01/07/2023 12:00

I agree OP. I have the same thought every time it comes on. Plus it's a shit advert anyway. Ignore the hysterical JD protectors on here 😂

eandz13 · 01/07/2023 12:01

Same as Snoop Dogg.
They've completed the main game, run out of things to do, now they're just doing side quests for fun!

Craftsandgardens · 01/07/2023 12:01

She must enjoy doing it, and I too remember reading that her eyesight isn't too good now. There are motivations other than money, such as the pleasure of acting, and being out there meeting people, as well as the feeling of being involved in a project. I think money will be a secondary consideration.

LakeTiticaca · 01/07/2023 12:02

Maybe be she just likes to keep active. Why are you so bothered?

Skinnermarink · 01/07/2023 12:02

Oh and Katy Perry doing JustEat! I bet she got paid loads for that.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 01/07/2023 12:03

It doesn’t bother me.

Clearly does or you wouldn't have posted.

Random789 · 01/07/2023 12:03

Lots of actors do the cheesy big bucks stuff to finance other, more genuinely creative projects elsewhere. And although I don't imagine Dench needs to subsidise her own acting elsewhere she may well be using her £££ to subsidise projects that benefit other, younger actors and creatives.

Skinnermarink · 01/07/2023 11:53

Same as why Jim Broadbent does the Aldi (or Lidl?) Christmas voiceover adverts or Bill Nighy dies annoying TK Max jingles. Little work, big money, keeps them relevant for other work to come in, don’t stop working or you get old and die sort of thing. Ian Mckellen never stops and he’s in his 80’s. I saw his stage show a few years ago and he actually said he was afraid to stop work and being busy as that’s when Grim will come knocking!

OP wasn’t being nasty for crying out loud, just pondering on a discussion form, honestly some of you need to go and eat a bacon sandwich and enjoy life.

😂 ^ This

I’m sure I read somewhere that her eyesight is very bad so she can’t read and/or retain the large amount of text from a film or tv so she’s sticking to adverts as the script is much smaller and easier to retain

Bluevelvetsofa · 01/07/2023 12:10

I think she’s of an age when she can please herself, do what she wants when she wants. Doesn’t the Luther actor do adverts for Booking.com or similar. I e noticed several actors recently involved in some way.

Judi Dench has problems reading scripts and that must be hard for someone who has spent all their working life learning lines. She’s done the films, the theatre, the Shakespeare, the TV and been very good at it. A bit of light relief maybe?

NotDavidTennant · 01/07/2023 12:10

Those 'net worth' things are all total guesswork. She may have managed her money badly and be on the bones of her arse for all anyone knows.

Maireas · 01/07/2023 12:10

Whataretheodds · 01/07/2023 11:43

Maybe she thought she needed to be higher profile so people who started posts about her would learn how to spell her name.

😂brilliant!

viques · 01/07/2023 12:10

Come off it OP if someone said to you the choice is being on stage for three hours a night , eight emotional , physical performances a week with failing eyesight, or being paid handsomely for a days work which is not going to be difficult emotionally or physically but will make people remember you, remember your incredible career and secure your future needs, which would you choose? As others have said, many actors just keep going until they drop, and good luck to them.

Appleblossompetal · 01/07/2023 12:11

Maybe she got a massive tax bill

viques · 01/07/2023 12:12

SuperSonicAyeAye · 01/07/2023 11:56

In the Louis Theroux interview she says "Clover butter paid for this house" and has a laugh about it. Why not?!

Jane Horrocks apparently refers to her house as Tesco Towers!

Maireas · 01/07/2023 12:13

I think it's great that people well into their 80s are still working, keeping active and engaging. I'm sure she'd like to be on the stage doing Hedda Gabler, but this will keep her ticking over.

WinniFinniHadog · 01/07/2023 12:15

My understanding of Dame Judi is she likes a laugh, and has a funny sense of humour.

She probably thought it would be a bit of fun and the payment for her service was probably nice also.

No harm in a bit of fun at 87+

Maireas · 01/07/2023 12:15

Appleblossompetal · 01/07/2023 12:11

Indeed. Maybe a loved one needs something. Maybe she gives generously to charity. Her business.

Shadesofscarlett · 01/07/2023 12:16

I always thought actors did these ads for the tax bill. If I were her I would do whatever I wanted - good for her.

Thebirdhouse · 01/07/2023 12:17

I thought the same OP.

Shes so high profile. It would be strange to see someone like David Attenborough promoting Center Parcs and I think of JD as someone similar.

I’d expect someone like Vernon Kay to make adverts not JD.

Willmafrockfit · 01/07/2023 12:17

there was a lady on the radio, still writes books, aged 80
and why not

Willmafrockfit · 01/07/2023 12:18

Isabel Allende

This is hilarious. Why is everyone so angry at a basic question/ convo topic!

the venom on this has made me giggle.

Crazy folks 🤣
