Do shit TV adverts for money comparison sites. I don’t get it. She’s worth £45m. She’s a ‘national icon’. A dame! Why would you bother? It’s perplexes me

OP posts:

Not just Dame Judi but a lot of a-listers will be for the because its a small amount of work for big money, allows for being more selective about the movies and TV shows they take on. Also allows to do more theatre work which doesn't pay very well much of the time.

It's a bit naff to be trading on her role as M IMO but Money Supermarket are a respectable company - it's not like she's flogging dodgy timeshare deals or bingo websites.

She probably just likes working and doesn't have much choice of full length roles with very limited eyesight.

Yes, Bond films themselves are in no way naff, are they? On a par with Hamlet and Hedda Gabler.

senua · 01/07/2023 12:52

Instead goes for jobs for her own craft and enjoyment and to test herself as an actress
Um, how does a cringy advertisement fit into this noble cause?

Can I quote you the example of Hugh Laurie. He was approached by Gillette to do some crappy advert. He turned it down.
So they offered more. Still 'no'.
So they offered more ...
HL eventually clicked that Gillette were going to pay somebody/anybody vast sums of money for an easy day's work. So he took the gig.
And instead of the already-rich actor taking the money, he gave it to charity.
Class.

I was always baffled by his Spontex Comfy Gloves ads - at the time he was the highest paid actor on TV, so needed neither the work nor the money. I surmised that there had to be a charity deal in there somewhere, and so it proved.

Many rich and famous people quietly give to charity without ever making it public.

(I know because of a previous job I had in the charity sector)

Quite. Announcing it seems to be a little crass to me. Like, you have millions already and gave an ad fee to charity- wow, you deserve a medal then, clearly 🙄

I agree. Class is not letting people know that you gave it to charity. Class is not taking the gig you didn't want anyway and allowing someone who wanted it more, both for the exposure and the money, to take it.

Clementineorsatsuma · 01/07/2023 12:53

I actually don't know who Judy Dench is.

Judi Dench, on the other hand, is a national treasure.

OP can't even spell her name right when questioning her decisions.

Clementineorsatsuma · 01/07/2023 12:53

Whataretheodds · 01/07/2023 11:43

Maybe she thought she needed to be higher profile so people who started posts about her would learn how to spell her name.

Yep!

Surely the same could be said for any celebrity that advertises for a company.
Kevin Bacon is worth about the same and he advertises for EE.

Kevin Bacon's EE adverts have the simplest explanation of all: he invested all the money he made in his eighties heyday with Bernie Madoff.

LaDeeDa123 · 01/07/2023 12:54

George Clooney does the coffee ads to pay for a satellite which watches what’s going on in Sudan. I thought this was common knowledge but clearly it isn’t.

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 01/07/2023 12:54

All the above

  1. She is partially blind now - adverts allow her to work
  2. She has a daughter and grandson she adores and presumably wants to continue to help out
  3. She isn't ready to retire
  4. She doesn't view adverts negatively like some thespians do
wavingtreetops · 01/07/2023 12:55

I think the answer is probably ‘money’.

Do I get a prize for getting it right?

Clementineorsatsuma · 01/07/2023 12:55

monicagellerbing · 01/07/2023 12:00

I agree OP. I have the same thought every time it comes on. Plus it's a shit advert anyway. Ignore the hysterical JD protectors on here 😂

No one is being hysterical.

Just questioning why the OP is questioning someone's life choices. Ageism? Misogyny? Jealousy?

No hysteria whatsoever

YourFault · 01/07/2023 12:55

jealous of her success probably, made more money off one film that you’ll ever make in your lifetime.

Your post is both pathetic and nasty

After reading this thread I can only conclude the Judi fans are a bunch of unhinged, rather unpleasant loons

willWillSmithsmith · 01/07/2023 12:57

Maybe working keeps her active at her age. She’s older than my mum but in much better shape mentally. Getting up in the morning to go do an ad is preferable to being half bedridden and not knowing what day it is!

Ejismyf · 01/07/2023 12:57

This was absolutely not a mean question, people are so offended by everything these days why are we all so bloody soft! Id imagine op, it must be good pay.

back to the playground….

Squirrel28 · 01/07/2023 12:58

She obviously does it because she feels strongly about people paying too much for their car insurance.

Clementineorsatsuma · 01/07/2023 12:59

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 01/07/2023 12:31

I agree Op, I don't get it either. Sure, it's her choice, it might be fun...I still don't get it.

I'm sure she doesn't care that you don't.

You may get it when you're 87 and the love of your life died many decades before.

Can't believe how people want to criticise an older woman's life choices. It's as if you don't think she should have the right to those choices.

NinjaTurtIe · 01/07/2023 13:00

money what else

Kitsmummy · 01/07/2023 13:01

Op I have thought the same and I'm amazed at the hysteria this has caused!!

Here's another one...Carolina Vorderman promoting Equity Release. Now I actually disapprove of that one...she's respected for being a super brain and great with numbers. Now flogging a known bloody scam

ChocChipHandbag · 01/07/2023 13:02

Squirrel28 · 01/07/2023 12:58

To be fair, with the cost of living crisis and lots of people who need to hang onto their cars for work but are struggling, that is actually something that is worth caring about. Comparison sites are a force for good in the consumer world, ask Martin Lewis.

Much better than her doing Direct Line or LV and duping people into not comparing prices because their heads are turned by her “endorsement”.
