How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

Part of me is still hoping for a miracle but it's not looking good. If by some miracle they were rescued imagine the impact of the psychological trauma of what they have endured. The poor families.

Asthebellcurves · 22/06/2023 13:38

@Emotionalsupportviper So in crisis situations, the amount of information is often overwhelming, and commanders have a challenging time prioritising their decision space. In decision making, even the most highly trained people are susceptible to order things are presented, their previous interactions even if unrelated, fear of too much information coming in - especially if that may contradict assumptions or decisions already made. This is particularly challenging for multilateral operations where there are also culture clashes. No one right now can say whether Magellan should have been allowed to go immediately, but I work in crisis management, and if it was my son on the submersible - that is who I would want there.

It's not kilometers. Its meters. 4000 meters. 2.5 ish miles.

This is what PP said. 4km is 4000m.

YoucancallmeKAREN · 22/06/2023 13:39

Until we know for sure, there is always hope.

Operation leader has said it is still an active search and rescue operation. Stop with the RIP posts, regardless of your personal thoughts. Distasteful.

Exactly.

Sorry if this has already been asked or if it’s in the wrong place. Was talking about it to DH earlier and got onto the subject of The Big Piece which we saw in the Las Vegas exhibition. He said, well if it’s almost impossible to raise the submersible (if it was located) how did they pull up a 20 tonne chunk of hull?

Nobody has said it’s almost impossible to raise the submersible. The Atalante ship is on site and it can rescue stuff from up to 8km underwater, using the Victor robot to attach chains which they winch up.

Lochjeda · 22/06/2023 13:42

There could be a chance one or two of them are still alive if someone older/weaker passed away quicker due to hypothermia etc. The oxygen would last longer.

Elerandooo · 22/06/2023 13:43

Just seen this on Sky News. Initial analysis from the US Navy suggests the noises heard were just background ocean noise. 😓

I know its the DM but they are reporting that they are believed to have died

The DM is also stating that dying from CO2 poisoning is a peaceful end. It isn't.

Snowy2022 · 22/06/2023 13:44

On Daily Mail ( I know) there is a clip the CEO boasting he broke some rules tome Titan as the material on the porthole doesn't meet the standards.

He says he will be remembered as an 'innovator'. Sorry if this sounds bad, but I really was consoled that he too was stranded in his make believe sub.

BoredOfLooking · 22/06/2023 13:45

So I have a couple of questions, I’m sure they’ve been answered before but I can’t see where, sorry.

1 - how does Titan get to the bottom of the sea? Is it literally dropping like a stone?

2 - I heard the interview with the journalist on Radio 4, he mentioned their Russian captain talking to the ship above via some sort of rudimentary phone. This was in the early 2000s I think, was this not an option for the Titan?

3 - when at the bottom of the sea, how do they find the Titanic? I read that it moves about 3mph, how do they know which direction to start looking in as it’s pitch black?

Thanks.

Thanks for this.
I take comfort in that.
If it were one of my loved ones in there, I'd rather think they died instantly from an implosion than from the alternative.

Snowy2022 · 22/06/2023 13:46

@Elerandooo

Oh dear! So the tick tock sound image of banging was fake.

thebigcheeselover · 22/06/2023 13:48

I couldn't sleep last night knowing that these 5 people are suffering while I was safe in my bed. It's just awful. What those people must have gone through/be going through is unimageable. The panic and fear. I only hope they had their mobile phones on them and they were able to write goodbye messages to their loved ones. The messages of course won't have been sent but they could be seen/sent when the people & their phones reach the surface/signal/the phones are turned on by loved ones.
I hope the owners of the vessel/company go on trial for manslaughter, if these people have died.

Can people stop with the "RIP" posts? Extremely distasteful.

It certainly is.

This is what I read too somewhere else (can't remember where though, sorry, and it was in Polish news portal).

TheTERFnextDoor · 22/06/2023 13:52

Events like this bring out both the best, and worst, in people sadly.

Part of me still thinks (hopes) the teenager could be alive. Surely, as a parent, you would hand over your supplies to save your child. Who knows what's truly happened down there. It could be possible..

I really hope not that would be awful sometimes you have to except things and not delay the inevitable. Why would anyone want their kid to die alone surrounded by bodies

The bit at the end about discussions with families dictating when the search will end is an official and respectful confirmation that right now, it is all over for the 5. Sad.

ThisHouseIsNotForSale · 22/06/2023 13:53

Extremely distasteful

It all is.

A pp said they feel we don't 'belong' in the deep sea ...

Agree with that or not, the thing which that statement called to mind was our looming Space Tourism industry. It's imminent. Started actually, to some degree i believe. Tickets to go out into space.

SpaceX - Estimated $55 million for a 3-day stay inside a modified SpaceX Dragon capsule orbiting the Earth at 357 miles (574 km) with three crewmates

Good god i hope it's better regulated than this deep sea tourism. I dread us all being here in a few years reading about people in a space capsule ...

Is it worth it? You wouldn't get me up there (or deep down in the sea) if you paid me 55 mil !
