How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

There won't be any bodies left to recover.

I don’t understand why there has to be an investigation? And why have 9 vessels gone down there now potentially putting medical and technical staff lives in danger.

Because most countries have a coronial inquest requirement in the event of deaths that are unknown, violent or unnatural. I’m sure that both Canada and the USA follow this protocol. The vessels descending are unmanned (to my knowledge) no one is at risk.

I don't think it's a group decision is it? If someone wants a thread they can start one

Well I wasn’t suggesting we take a vote was i? In the last few threads someone has normally said they’re going to make a new one and has linked it

  1. the CEO was on the sub
  2. it was carbon fibre not fibre glass

I think they lost contact after a few hours.

Would those on the surface not have heard the implosion or would it have happened so quickly that the radio contact was lost before it exploded?

Well he’s dead, so… you mean the co-founder I guess? You’ve not been keeping up with this tragedy at all have you?

MISSING TITAN SUB - THREAD 5 www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4833433-missing-titan-sub-thread-5

Yeah I meant that. I have been watching this thread day and night

We can all hope it happened on the way down. What if it happened after being sat on the sea floor for days, stuck with no power? Doesn't bear thinking about don’t think about it then.

Honestly I don’t understand why people need to invent worst case scenarios when the obvious answer is almost certainly the right one.

The sub lost contact four days ago. No contact from it. It didn’t surface as was supposed to even in the event of a lost contact.

Then it is found four days later having suffered a catastrophic explosion. Something which has always been suggested was possible.

Why do people insist on conjuring up a picture of these people sat dying for days as their oxygen ran out, rather than accepting what actually happened.

I agree. We now know what happened and people are still speculating, and questioning. It's happened, it's over, it needs to be accepted, people saying "what if" and "how" achieves nothing. It is a terrible tragedy, and there will be a lot of questions - but they are for the experts, not random MNers.

In real life I didn't hear anyone mention it until yesterday, and it was the usual how terrible, hope they find them soon sort of comment, not this endless questioning and inventing scenarios.

And how do you propose to sue the CEO given that he's dead?

Oh hang on, I just realised it's one of thread bridge-dwellers. The fiber glass should have been a giveaway.

Maybe they can sue B&Q for supplying the fiber glass @Catbeemouse?

He didn't. Please read the information before typing up opinions.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 21:35

I just sincerely hope it was as quick and painless as possible. Would they have had any warning / knowledge that they were about to pass? It's just so awful, the whole idea of it. I hope they went peacefully.

It is quite possible they had no warning at all. I hope so really.

The Titanic subreddit have an animation of what an implosion looks like. I realise this may seem bad taste to some (so don't click if it bothers you). But it seems a lot of people are grappling with what an implosion is and the consequences of one so it may be informative as a visual aid.

Thanks for that. Horrible to watch but explains it well.

The one where autopsy’s were doing? Meaning remains were found.

Did you not read the "Medical Findings" part?

Queenoftheworld · 22/06/2023 21:39

I am baffled by the interest in this.

Three privileged rich men sadly died whilst spending life-changing amounts of money and many many tonnes of carbon on a jolly.

Well it's not interesting now we know the ending. It was the suspense that captivated people.

Sigh… five people died, including a 19-year-old. If you’re going to be callous at least get the facts right.

CherryCokeFanatic · 22/06/2023 21:42

Out of interest who is funding the costs of all these search efforts?

When billionaires spend what is to most a fortune, on a high risk trip, that they knew was and chose to anyway. I struggle to be empathetic about anything to do with this story.

Marteenie · 22/06/2023 21:42

Sorry if this has been posted already, this is so sad. Apparently he went on because he dad was a titanic obsessive:

The 19 year old student who was on board the ill-fated Titan submersible had been "terrified" ahead of the voyage, his aunt claimed.

Azmeh Dawood, the sister of Shahzada Dawood and aunt to Suleman Dawood told NBC News that Suleman "wasn't very up for it" and was "terrified".

SadOrWickedFairy · 22/06/2023 21:43

The titanic is at 3,800 meters. It takes 2 hours to get there. They lost contact at 1hr 40mins. Pretty much at the 3,000 meter mark.

I can't find the words to comment on this, disaster waiting to happen is the only thing apart from swear words that come to mind.

The CEO seemed to be totally blase about risk and safety, fine for yourself but not on behalf of others. There's risk taking and utter arrogance and stupidity and the CEO is the latter and this is the result.
