We can discuss things that are horrifying and ghoulish, thanks for your opinion.
Migrant boats are sad too

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

The bit at the end about discussions with families dictating when the search will end is an official and respectful confirmation that right now, it is all over for the 5. Sad.

No, it isn't. It's the reporter's slant. The official news is they will continue as a rescue mission until a full 24 hours after the oxygen is thought to have run out.

JeandeServiette · 22/06/2023 14:10

Yes, I advise governments (sometimes against other governments) and have developed skills to decipher their public messages. With Covid in UK- I was always 3 weeks ahead of gov public updates so that I was in constant demand by friends and relative to explain to them what 'it all really meant as I was more honest'.

TBH, this one isn't too difficult to decipher. It's just sensitivity, not kabuki.

There seems to be so much conflicting information on what was actually aboard the Titan. There are people saying they were only allowed to bring on board a bottle of water, and a sandwich to avoid having to use the restroom. Is this true?!

It was hardly a restroom. It looked more like a piss bottle from the video I saw.

RoseBucket · 22/06/2023 14:11

I missed the other threads, this rescue sounds so unlikely now however until otherwise there is still hope. The CEOs wife lost her great grandparents on the ship and now possibly her husband, dreadful for everyone involved.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/06/2023 14:11

On a search scale, this is bigger than a needle in a haystack scenario even with reasonably good information about where the sub should be, which of course it might not be anywhere near the correct place anyway. They're effectively looking for a single speck of white sand on an entire beach of normal brown coloured sand.

FettleOfKish · 22/06/2023 14:12

US Air Force are still in Jersey. Appear to be readying to leave but in no particular rush. I was supposed to be at an after hours event at the airport tonight and that's just been cancelled as 'they're unsure if the airport will be required to remain open late' so who knows when they're likely to depart.

The airport usually closes the runway at 9pm.

oh thanks.Didn't see the update with the specific time (24 hours) being mentioned by officials. That's more honest.

Must say I have found the US official's (coastguard) updates more honest and timely (even if they have to override previous updates as in the banging sound) than what we get from our UK gov officials plus the Met who just like to say, 'we ask people not to speculate'. I really hate being lied to by officials or being treated like I don't have a brain.

broadbezb · 22/06/2023 14:15

Asked when rescuers might consider the situation is “beyond all hope”, Mauger said “there is a time and place for that discussion” but that the focus of the unified command team was “on using the capability that we have now on site to locate the people and the submersible”.

milkyaqua · 22/06/2023 14:16

Just because some news sites have had a ticking down clock for the oxygen supplies doesn't mean it's over. There are so many variables and unknowns.

Snowy2022 · 22/06/2023 14:17

Right now, the search will continue regardless of what is publicly stated as the purpose of it. To find the 5 and the sub - dead or alive is hugely important right now and maybe for the next 24 hours or 48 hours. I am sure most will agree on that.

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 22/06/2023 13:25

It's not kilometers. Its meters. 4000 meters. 2.5 ish miles.

4000 metres is 4km 🤦‍♀️

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 22/06/2023 14:19

The weather in the area is really good today, they will press on full steam.

Weather on scene: winds at 14 mph with gusts up to 19mph. Sea state is 4-5ft swells with an air temp of 50°f.
US coastguard

Snowy2022 · 22/06/2023 14:20

@milkyaqua Correct. And that has been repeated many times, here and elsewhere. An essay can be written on the variables.

They can even find the sub with some of them subconscious as the heart is the last to stop- said a specialist dr on BBC.

momtoboys · 22/06/2023 14:20

I am sick to think about the panic those poor people must have suffered. I pray for peace for them and their families.

Snowy2022 · 22/06/2023 14:21

@Itisyourturntowashthebath
yes, read about the weather too, this morning. Another reason for the search to continue as it is safe for all today.

Bouledeneige · 22/06/2023 14:22

Of course they may never find the Titan or not for many years. And we may never know what happened or their final messages.

If I was with my 19 yr old DS I'd want us to go together. But after Mr Rush.

Mistressofnone · 22/06/2023 14:23

Someone raised a really good point, why do these missions not involve an escort sub for safety. I know double the cost, but money doesn't seem to be an issue for OceanGate.

I was thinking why was there no GPS or tracker on the sub.

GPS doesn’t work under water.

DisgustingBrother · 22/06/2023 14:26

Because GPS trackers do not work under water, as said several times before on these threads.

I'll freely admit this is pure speculation but I'm thinking with such poor visability and strong currents this would me move of a liability than an asset.

Although I think an ROV that waits with the mothership to be deployed if the origional is lost could make sense

WrongWayApricot · 22/06/2023 14:27

Is it possible to put a siren on all the commercial vehicles that can get lost at sea? Something like an emergency button that sets off a bleeping that goes on for ages. We keep losing things underwater and surely we can find a way to not keep losing them? I can see why a military submarine doesn't want one, but something like this or a passenger plane...

milkyaqua · 22/06/2023 14:27

An emergency beacon would not have gone astray.

Rhondaa · 22/06/2023 14:27

Elerandooo · 22/06/2023 14:26

GPS doesn’t work under water.

Surely in this day of high tech there must be some underwater tracking available? It all seems so crude and amateurish. Like going sailing in a boat made of washing up bottles.
