How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

The bit at the end about discussions with families dictating when the search will end is an official and respectful confirmation that right now, it is all over for the 5. Sad.

It's so important for the families to be involved in calling it, though.

I hope lessons will be learned from this.

This is such a sick post. The smiley face? Awful people.

It's not great to be honest, and someone did start a more appropriately worded thread but it was deleted as a duplicate.

I listened to this over lunch and it was interesting. It’s with the NY Times’s science reporter, who has himself done some deep sea dives/exploration. It was recorded yesterday so not 100% up to date on developments. But the discussion of concerns surrounding OceanGate when it first emerged, and what he thinks will happen after all this, are interesting.

@Emotionalsupportviper So in crisis situations, the amount of information is often overwhelming, and commanders have a challenging time prioritising their decision space. In decision making, even the most highly trained people are susceptible to order things are presented, their previous interactions even if unrelated, fear of too much information coming in - especially if that may contradict assumptions or decisions already made. This is particularly challenging for multilateral operations where there are also culture clashes. No one right now can say whether Magellan should have been allowed to go immediately, but I work in crisis management, and if it was my son on the submersible - that is who I would want there.

Indeed.

It's unique situation, too. And for the commanders having to be answerable to politicians (I'm sure they will be - these are high-profile people) and knowing that the eyes of the world are on them won't help.

Thank you for your insight - much appreciated.

I couldn't sleep last night knowing that these 5 people are suffering while I was safe in my bed. It's just awful. What those people must have gone through/be going through is unimageable. The panic and fear. I only hope they had their mobile phones on them and they were able to write goodbye messages to their loved ones. The messages of course won't have been sent but they could be seen/sent when the people & their phones reach the surface/signal/the phones are turned on by loved ones.
I hope the owners of the vessel/company go on trial for manslaughter, if these people have died.

I was checking my phone every hour or so overnight and today. I can't stop thinking about the mothers who are waiting on the news. I have this terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. These poor people.

Just been reading these tweets from someone who went on the same submersible excursion last year. He said there is everything needed in there to survive 5 days. Would that take them till tomorrow if thats true?

I didn't quote the whole thing for brevity which has worked well on this thread. Why I attached previous quote instead.

The say they will first advice the family and then the decision to call it off is after they have discussions with families. Families have very little SAY (in the literal sense of the word) in when the search ends even if they are throwing money at this which they are not- this is a co-ordinated search requiring many players. So it will be an EXPERT decision to end the search, not family decision. Hence it is an official speak that right now, it is all over for the 5.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 14:01

Have there been any further news updates..? It seems they have stopped reporting so frequently. I can only hope that's a good sign?

The ROV reached the ocean floor an hour or so ago.

@milkyaqua okay, great. Thank you.

Fingers crossed.

Does that account for 5 people though, or was it 5 days for 3/4 people? If it was 5 then there is still hope.

milkyaqua · 22/06/2023 14:04

They're not going to give up, just because the 96 hours is over. There are so many variables.

tortoishelll · 22/06/2023 14:05

There seems to be so much conflicting information on what was actually aboard the Titan. There are people saying they were only allowed to bring on board a bottle of water, and a sandwich to avoid having to use the restroom. Is this true?!

Quite right that it is a decision taken out of the hands of the families. They are too emotionally involved to think clearly. And how can they ever draw a line under the rescue, when they would be sitting each day thinking - "Perhaps if I'd ask ed them to keep going for another day - maybe that would have been enough. Maybe they could have brought them back alive" Families can't and should not have such responsibility.

The experts in this area are the ones who should be making these decisions - they know the odds, and they also know when it is inappropriate ti=o risk other lives unnecessarily.

Not wanting to admit the situation is now hopeless doesn't make rescue any more likely., unfortunately.

Hmm. That's what you'd expect. What you don't want is the families feeling overlooked or like it's all going on over their heads. They need to be heal as best they can from the trauma of the search as well as dealing with the outcome.

I hope the frontline rescuers will be remembered for this superhuman effort too.

This comes from, I believe, someone who went down on one of the expeditions last year or the previous year and stated this was what they were allowed to take with them.

I hope that is the case. Also hopefully they would have tried to use as little oxygen as possible.I have been thinking about this non stop.

That’s true, it was a gentleman who went down on Titan last year.

It is to minimise the need to use the toilet while on board.

yes, talking about first needing to talk to families when the time comes to end search etc etc. Which I say is official confirmation the sub 5 are no more. However, the official line is 'it is still an active search and rescue mission.'

Yes, I advise governments (sometimes against other governments) and have developed skills to decipher their public messages. With Covid in UK- I was always 3 weeks ahead of gov public updates so that I was in constant demand by friends and relative to explain to them what 'it all really meant as I was more honest'.

WeSatAroundTheFire · 22/06/2023 13:31

Is there a reason why it is white? Just wondering why it was painted bright red or something - so it could be seen more easily. Or would this alarm sea life?

It's pitch black in the deep ocean. You can't see anything. But white is probably slightly easier to pick up in the reflection of a light from another craft.

I scuba dive and even in 30 metres of water just off the coast it can be very dark, very disorientating, very easy to drift off course due to currents, lack of visibility etc.

So many times I've descended to a wreck only to not be able to find it even though the skipper said they'd moored straight above the wreck in water a hundred times shallower than where the Titanic is.

In the distance the Titanic and this craft has gone even a tiny tiny deviation from the intended landing spot could mean they'd be hundreds of metres off course if not more.

The search could be similar to the lost plane MH370. They spent weeks scouring the Indian Ocean then and couldn't find any trace and I still don't think they have apart from the parts that have washed up on the east coast of Africa.
