They're a bit late for all this scrambling to rescue the vessel now aren't they?

What were the other options?

Systems capable of operating at this depth are very few.

They then have to get there. It's not a quick process.

This isn't about a lack of effort - just a reflection of the situation.

Lots of equipment coming in to join the search now. Why has it taken so long? It’s now three days since the coast guard was alerted, they have less than 24h left. Praying for a miracle.

Travel by sea is slow and you need specialised ships that presumably have come from far and wide. And maybe specialist equipment that would need to be transported by road then loaded onto a boat and shipped out to the Titanic. So there's the time it takes to source the necessary equipment/vessels then the time for them to get to this fairly remote and inhospitable location. I'm sure they're going as fast as they can.

dogsarelife · 21/06/2023 18:54

Keep checking the news for updates.

It's a truly horrendous situation 😞 those poor people and there families.

YoSof · 21/06/2023 18:54

The coastguard has confirmed more banging was heard this morning but they can’t confirm it was from Titan.

Its unbearable to think they are alive and can’t be reached. I keep refreshing the news hoping against hope.

The wreck site is in the middle of nowhere

350 miles from Newfoundland and 900 miles from Halifax USA - it's taken time to get their

There were bones - including full skeletons - brought up when the Mary Rose was raised, and that had been underwater for considerably longer than a century.

The Mary Rose lay in about 40m of water. Not 4000m

The pressure, current, temperature, microbes and fauna are completely different

This thread is getting full, I have to go out if someone wishes to make a new one?

I know people think it’s in bad taste, but some of the information given on this thread has been really informative and it’s comforting to speak to others while we wait for updates, I think so anyway.

From what some pp's have said it sounds like there will almost literally only be a handful of pieces of equipment worldwide capable of operating at the sort of depths being talked about here.

Unless they just happened to be sitting idle in St John's they'll need to be taken off whatever task they were on a few days back and then flown out (if small enough) or worse still shipped out to St John's and then sail out to the search area. It's bound to take several days.

Which could possibly aid preservation, There is less oxygen leading to less microbial action which would slow decomposition, as would the intense cold. Predation is another matter, but the very currents and pressure you mention could cause bones to be covered with sand or silt, protecting them.

I’ve made a 3rd thread for when this gets full.

Im honestly hoping for a miracle now. We’re so down to the wire

I guess it would be technically difficult to have some kind of external low frequency device to send out a pulse in case of emergency that a hydrophone could home in on.

I wonder how much of a "what if" they thought about and how much they thought of possible solutions to the scenarios?

YoSof · 21/06/2023 19:02

Thank you @Badabingbadaboomm

Actually imagine how amazing it would be if they were found and recovered!

Possibly, but there is also the action of pressure and different bacteria such as
Halomonas titanicae - Wikipedia

Basically, we are still learning about this, which is why even missions such as this one (assuming they at least video what they see) have value in helping us understand the deep ocean

As for how much is this costing, it’s a slippery slope to suggest who is worthy of help and who isn’t. Billionaires today, anyone earning above the national wage tomorrow, maybe anyone not on benefits - be careful what you wish for.

How many of us put ourselves in stupidly dangerous situations for entertainment? Some of us are struggling to live basic lives because of billionaires.

Indeed, the Carpathia saved an amazing 705 lives . It took them 4 hours to get to the Titanic due to where they were when they picked up the distress signal.
As a side note, a local pub in a nearby village has a blue plaque dedicated to Harold Cottam ,the radio operator of the Carpathia who picked up the Titanic distress call and the 705 lives he saved. He was from the area and retired to this village and drank in the aforementioned pub.

When I was transcribing parish registers for a genealogy site one 'baby' whose baptism I transcribed was Arthur Rostron, the future Captain of the Carpathia, he was baptised in the Church we attended some years ago.

I'll bet you were thrilled - I would have been.

There are an impressive amount of vessels heading to the Titanic sight.

oakleaffy · 21/06/2023 19:19

It's an horrendous situation.
If there isn't a miracle, one can just hope that a death in an anoxic environment isn't too painful.

There was a TV programme about fighter pilots who passed out from lack of oxygen/too much CO2 and they just go to sleep.

So wrong that these dangerous 'Visits' were ever allowed to take place.
