Would they even be able to locate and raise Titan? Is it even possible when they can't even bring the remains of the Titanic victims up for a proper burial?

There are no remains of the Titanic victims, at this point.

Nimbus9000 · 21/06/2023 17:23

Lol what remains do you imagine are still there 111 years later?

At least they've moved on from the "playstation controller" - constantly after someone explained the same are used on US Navy submarines

So let's say the submersible has made it up to the ocean. It's been bobbing along for four days in awful weather - there was a brief lull in the weather which is why it went down in the first place - and in up to 10ft waves that 'toilet, is absolutely going to stay put? Have you never been on a boat during bad weather?

Shoes, clothes and other possessions have been observed. Bones might well be there still.

Exactly. Bones are pretty much indestructible.

DysonSpheres · 21/06/2023 17:29

I hope they're found for the sake of the young lad. I actually felt choked up thinking about him, I have a son just two years older and regardless of what the law says, he is still like a child and has both the misplaced confidence and the insecurities that come with youth and is sometimes still in need of guidance and comfort from me.

I imagine the father must be feeling guilty a bringing him along. I cannot imagine a parent not feeling that way.

StartingOverAt52 · 21/06/2023 16:54

Oh yes. I've done it many times🙄

As a total aside, that was one of the reasons why the Army didn't want women in tank crews. Though the Scandis showed that all-female crews are highly proficient.

Don’t be ridiculous, bones decompose like any other natural substance, it just takes longer than soft tissues.

Seriously? The remains of the Titanic victims were under 2.5 miles of sea for over 70 years before the wreck was discovered. Getting swept away by the tides and decomposing. Have you ever even seen a single bone in any videos of the Titanic wreck?

Finding a modern submersible that has been in the sea a few days is an entirely different (but still very difficult) proposition.

So dinosaur bones are just figments of everyone's imagination? Many of those bones were in the sea or a deep lake before being exposed.

How do you explain dinoosaur bones thousands of years old? 🤦‍♀️🙄

Dunnoburt · 21/06/2023 17:37

Think they are fossils.....right conditions etc...turned into stone?

Beat me to it 👍

MoleAtTheCounter · 21/06/2023 17:38

No bones are present, all that remains are leather boots and shoes; it is thought because of the tannin. There is a specialist bacterium 'eating' the steel plates - it has been named Halomonas titanicae.

Bingo!

How did they get to be fossilised?

It would be a lot worse than being on a boat due to being cylindrical. It would roll.

Re dinosaur bones, weren’t they preserved in mud? I think they have to be preserved in something, and under the right conditions.

Dunnoburt · 21/06/2023 17:40

I'm no expert but I don't think they are bones per se... you need the right conditions for it to happen....

Leastsaidsoonestscrewed · 21/06/2023 17:40

BeverleyMacker · 21/06/2023 17:37

They are fossilised. Different process. Bones under the open ocean are slowly consumed.

darkmodeon · 21/06/2023 17:41

lljkk · 21/06/2023 17:17

Don't you think they are busy composing notes to their loved ones, expressing their last wishes about heirs etc.? Is an obvious thing they "can" do.

Yeah but once you've done it once that's done

meditrina · 21/06/2023 17:43

The deepest find of dinosaur bones was at 2,250m.

This is nearly twice as deep, and human bones a fraction of the size in the first place.

We don't know what the rate of decay would be at that depth.

(Even if all this voyage did was passively video what could be seen, it would add to knowledge of what happens that deep and over what timelines)

justgettingthroughtheday · 21/06/2023 17:43

@placemats & @BeverleyMacker fossils are formed under very specific conditions. This explains the process

DysonSpheres · 21/06/2023 17:43

Dinosaur bones aren't bones anymore they're effectively stone.

Trixiefirecracker · 21/06/2023 17:48

I read an article about some Arabian sea farers whose bones were preserved under layers of silt and mud. They were from the 10th century. Bones hare picked clean very quickly but can be preserved for a very long time indeed under the right conditions.

TheLassoWay · 21/06/2023 17:51

Jesus Christ what is with all the discussion of bones. No one is going to go searching the bottom of the ocean and recover bones from the victims of the Titanic. The discussion of human bones, dinosaur bones and fossils is completely irrelevant.

Can people try and keep the discussion to more relevant matters?!

StartingOverAt52 · 21/06/2023 17:51

So how many millions is it costing to rescue/recover some billionaires?
