I see the first one is full, is there a new one?

@bluewanda, the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty are included to help people understand the distance below the surface. I find it incredibly difficult to imagine, even with those cues, but they do help a little. I’ve seen both of those structures so it goes some way to help me picture how deep we’re taking.

waterlego · 21/06/2023 21:04

What would help me even more would be to see how many 6ft men could stand on each other’s shoulders at each point. I could probably sit and work it out but that’s a lot of maths and I still need a pictorial representation really.

@Fuckitydoodah
Not necessarily. There could have been cumulative damage with each mission, not visible to the naked eye. Eventually, resulting in a catastrophic failure.

Yes that's possible. Personally I believe ocean gate when they say
Classed subs are only required to undergo depth validation every three years, whereas our RTM system validates the integrity of the hull on each and every dive.
Seems way more likely that they'd check before each dive than not. Especially when the CEO is risking his own life.

I think the question is how much faith does anyone have in their RTM system given their sub seems to have been partly built by bits from B&Q? And their former Director of Marine Operations was fired when he raised safety concerns and then paid off when he took them to court.

Would you trust the CEO? Losing your life is a hard way to find out that he might play fast and loose with the truth.

Can I just ask why the total frenzy over finding 5 male millionaires, when hundreds of unaccompanied child asylum seekers have gone missing and nobody gives a single shit? The hypocrisy is pretty disgusting.

How do you know I don’t give a shit?

I don’t think the depth video was made specifically for this moment, it shows the depths of various wrecks, seas, oil platforms etc. And the Mariana Trench

@Fuckitydoodah the submersible has made 3 previous trips to the Titanic's location before without the window being a problem.

I drove my car for months with a broken fan and managed to get away with it because the weather was cold. Then there was a warm day and my car overheated and broke down. Why should that happen when I’d driven it successfully on multiple occasions with a broken fan? Because circumstances change.

Titan may have gotten away with having a shitty window for multiple trips and been lucky. Then circumstances change. Maybe a particularly cold day or a particularly strong current that hit the window… and POP!

I guess it would be technically difficult to have some kind of external low frequency device to send out a pulse in case of emergency that a hydrophone could home in on.

No, bog standard industry practice and has been for decades. It's a USBL beacon, which has failed - that's what was pinging the mothership.

USBL (Ultra Short Baseline Beacon) operates at a fairly high frequency, in the 30 to 60 kHz range.

The mothership has a receiver mounted on a pole through the hull and it usually has five elements, which allows for multiple, simultaneous triangulations. It will work out depth, position and vector, although in this depth of water, it's likely to be a 100m by 100m box.

Tragically, as it's not working, they can't locate them without sending an ROV to look.

There were bones - including full skeletons - brought up when the Mary Rose was raised, and that had been underwater for considerably longer than a century.

The Mary Rose and its contents - including bones and clothing- were preserved in mud and lasted from 1545.
The situation on the Titanic is very different.

Gosh, does everyone here wish there was a penalty button for people who weigh in without having read any of the previous threads?

This topic and others have been at or near the top of the most-read lists since Tuesday, when it happened. @ItsCalledAConversation please stop acting stupid, do just read back a bit. Your question has been chewed over at length.

I’m glad the pp comment was deleted. Some of these posts are 😳

Some of the posts are so off that I wouldn’t be surprised if bots or AI were practising in this thread. The alternative is worrying.

I see, thanks! That has helped me envisage the depth a bit better now. What an absolutely terrifying situation. I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone could have the nerve to get in that submarine in the first place. So frightening.

The interest this has generated is surely because it's an unusual situation; a group of accomplished explorers trapped in almost unfathomable depths, and at the site of the Titanic.

It doesn't mean people don't care about child asylum seekers or migrant sea deaths.

EffortlessDesmond · 21/06/2023 21:13

Drive the distance between Ealing and Notting Hill directly downhill at 90 degrees. That's how deep the trench where Titanic sank is.

hindere · 21/06/2023 21:15

Yes, numerous people (inc Cameron) said they have never seen bones. Shoes in pairs though, which they guessed may have at one time contained a body.

They did say it's possible there may be bodies preserved within, but they don't know for certain.

Spamham · 21/06/2023 21:17

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Obviously the Titan was not safe.

Even if previous descents went to such low depths and returned successfully, it does not correlate to all parts of vessel itself to be certifiably safe at 4000m.

waterlego · 21/06/2023 21:19

@bluewanda, you’re welcome. It’s mind blowing isn’t it? I don’t go out of my depth even in the English Channel and also don’t like being in enclosed spaces so there is no chance whatsoever of me getting into any submarine or submersible. I’m quite risk averse generally!

On that ocean depths animation, it goes all the way down to the Mariana trench which is the deepest ocean trench on earth at just under 11000 metres. Unbelievably, people have been all the way down there in submersibles, including the film director James Cameron, I believe.

This fact about the Mariana Trench messes with my head:

‘If Mount Everest were placed into the trench at its deepest point, its peak would still be underwater by more than 2 kilometres (1.2 mi)’ 🤯

Everyone "gives a shit" about the migrants.

But empathy came off ration.

Hamish Harding has a Guiness world record for time apent in the Mariana Trench.

bluewanda · 21/06/2023 21:27

Thanks @waterlego . I need to look up some images of Everest as am struggling to picture that too!

I did a quick Google and apparently about 200 people have been down to see the Titanic since it sank. So not many but it’s not like the missing five were the first. Still, I can see why it would be a thrilling thing to see if you’re that way inclined (I am most definitely not).

bluewanda · 21/06/2023 21:29

I honestly don’t think there’s enough money in the world that could tempt me to make that trip. It’s just too frightening for words.

"Drive the distance between Ealing and Notting Hill directly downhill at 90 degrees."

What a strange 2 places to choose 🤔

Snowy2022 · 21/06/2023 21:48

Lightbulb moment!!!

For the FIRST TIME, I now FULLY understand why the French authorities and/or passing big vessels in the Channel escort migrant boats and/or hand them over at sea to British authorities to help bring them safely to English shores. All this at a huge amount of public resources (our taxes!).

Some have paid lots of money understanding or not understanding the risks as some are children or uneducated. The majority of them, if not all, have embarked on a journey of this nature for the first time and have never been in a flimsy boat at sea before; therefore, no previous experience to draw on.

IT IS A RESCUE operation just like any other. Long may that continue!!

Not really… most towns are more than a couple of miles apart so it has to be areas.

Thousands?! 🤣

That's how deep the trench where Titanic sank is.

It's not in a trench, it's on the Abyssal Plain, which is a vast, flat area, with mean slopes of <1°

I'm a geologist and marine surveyor, not to mention a bit of a pedant...
