FFS.

Ellmau · 20/06/2023 22:42

Given you can't even drive a car without insurance how on earth was this expedition even legal? NOBODY would have insured this surely?

I doubt anything was insured. The passengers signed a massive liability waiver including death.

That probably wouldn't prevent criminal charges and maybe even a successful civil claim if there was proven negligence or misleading info at any point.

GottaGirlcrush · 20/06/2023 22:42

Keep checking for news

Thanks for the new thread

? What's up?

Did the CEO usually go on these missions or was this a one off? Nobody has questioned his state of mind and whether he took his passengers and himself out on purpose?

Submersible experts wrote to OceanGate CEO expressing concern
The New York Times has unearthed a 2018 letter sent by submersible experts to Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate.
The authors of the letter expressed "unanimous concern" over the approach taken by OceanGate when building the Titan and warned of potential "catastrophic" issues with its design.
They also said OceanGate was making "misleading" claims about its design exceeding established industry safety standards and urged Rush to institute a prototype testing program reviewed and witnessed by an accredited registrar.
"It is our unanimous view that this validation process by a third-party is a critical component in the safeguards that protect all submersible occupants," the letter read.
The NYT said a spokesperson for OceanGate declined to comment

I think it's imploded sadly hence why they possibly can't detect it with sonar. If sonar can even reach the seabed in that depth of ocean?

Ryah76 · 20/06/2023 22:48

I cannot imagine what they are going through, trapped in such confined space in darkness, no heat and limited oxygen.. it’s the stuff of nightmares. I’m hoping for a miracle rescue.. failing that I hope that at some point a recovery will be possible.

I don't think that it was a one off. He seems very involved/hands on.

As I said before, it's also extremely cold and the passengers would be suffering from hyperthermia.

I feel really upset about the 19yo on board. Obviously hope everyone survives but for the older men at least they took a risk knowingly. 19 years old and taken on by his dad, just unbearably sad 😭

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/06/2023 22:50

Jeez they really are a cowboy company

thecatsthecats · 20/06/2023 22:50

In the UK, sure. Other countries are available.

Totally agree , so so awful , the poor mum 😞

Hotandverybotheredagain · 20/06/2023 22:52

I am hoping that something catastrophic happened and they all died instantly..can bare to contemplate anything else …absolutely horrible.

"I am hoping that something catastrophic happened and they all died instantly"

Or that they can be saved?

DS 15 (he has asd) is a massive titanic enthusiast, when I told him about it on Sunday he’s been non stop following it… his best friend is also a huge titanic enthusiast and apparently they spent the whole day following the story at school..

I don’t need to read the news, he’s been giving me updates.
as much as I love to see him in his element, this story is very worrying..
I hope they find them soon… I can’t help but think they’ve got into a situation no one expects..

Sorry I wasn’t clear …well obviously but I cannot see how that will happen apart from a miracle.

TheUsualChaos · 20/06/2023 23:01

I'd be amazed if they are still alive at this point. Likely something went catastrophically wrong when contact was lost. That at least would be preferable to them being stuck in there waiting to die. The company sound awful, ignoring warnings from all the experts. The whole thing just seems absolutely ludicrous the more I think about it. But then again people take crazy risks all the time for adventure and sport that don't make headlines. I think the other worldly nature of the deep ocean and the money involved is obviously going to grab attention.

I think an expert said that the wide range of debris already on the sea bed made distinguishing it very difficult. It's not very big. Needle in haystack territory I suppose.

There is almost zero chance of rescue now I would imagine, unless it has surfaced and is found in the next few hours

An instant death is probably the best we can hope for at this stage.

I'm hoping for a miracle. It's not over yet

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 20/06/2023 23:03

They took a risk which they accepted.

The whole project was hideously wrong from the outset. It is a grave site which the company were using for their own greed .

I am finding it a struggle to have empathy for people who knowingly put themselves in this position.

Confused did you just write that? I haven't followed the other threads, just came across this in active but I assume the earlier posters FFS comment relates to comments like this!
