My pet just died unnecessarily

I’m really upset. I don’t know what I hope to achieve from this post- but I need to write down what’s in my head. I feel so heartbroken.
I had a beautiful pet tortoise. I know she was “just” a reptile and maybe she didn’t really care for me- but I loved her.
today I had to go in to work early and asked my husband to put her outside in her run after the school run whilst he worked from home. He agreed. He forgot. When I got home she’d gotten stuck upside down under her heat lamp. She had blood coming out her nose and was so so hot. I can’t get the of her out of my head. I tried to revive her- but she was gone. I’ve buried her in the garden and will plant a rose bush over her. I feel sick with guilt I didn’t put her outside myself- I chose not to as it was still cold here at 7 and the grass was damp. My husband sat in the same room as her all day and says he just didn’t notice. I’m so angry with my husband I can barely look at him. I know it was a mistake on his part- he wouldn’t hurt an animal on purpose….but I still feel so cross with him.

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had my tortoise for 20 years and they soon become much loved members of the family. He's the coolest member for sure.

I have to tempt mine in from the garden with a disgusting smelly old converse. They must all have a foot kink!

Justhereforaibu1 · 23/05/2023 21:16

I'm so sorry, how awful. Your husband must feel terrible too, accidents happen. Poor little thing.

whyisitalwayswindy · 23/05/2023 21:16

I'm so sorry about your girl. Never feel you have to say she was 'just' a reptile, she was a living sentient creature and you loved her.

Your husband needs his arse kicking. I'm sure he didn't do it deliberately but could he not have looked in her direction just once. My ex partner did something along the same lines when he sat working in the same room as one of my cats who he knew wasn't well. I got home from work and asked how he was and his reply was "oh he's been sleeping all day". He had! Because he was really poorly and I had to rush him to the vet. I was furious so I can understand how you feel.

Massive hugs to you. I'm so sorry for the loss of your beautiful tortoise x

TotallyScouting · 23/05/2023 21:18

This exact thing happened to us with our tortoise. We can’t work out how she turned herself over, but it was horrific and we were devastated and all felt such guilt that we hadn’t noticed 💐

Sugargliderwombat · 23/05/2023 21:18

Ahh she's not just a reptile, she was your mate! Let yourself grieve and try to remind yourself it's over now, she can't feel anything now. Xxxxx

Are you going to say that to the poster who posted above you that the same thing happened to them?

InSpainTheRain · 23/05/2023 21:22

Oh gosh OP, I'm so sorry. So sad, especially for your to find your tortoise that way. Think of the good times you enjoyed together on the clover and all your happy memories.

IheartNiles · 23/05/2023 21:23

So sorry op. Fellow tortoise owner here.

I don’t blame you being cross with him and he was in the room all day with the tortoise.

I do wonder if it’s a tragic accident and whether your lamp overheated, 32c shouldn’t be enough to cause that damage. They are skilled at tipping themselves over but it’s not unusual for a basking lamp to be on for 12 hours/day and impossible for most people to police them for all that time. Mine certainly get left alone all day with their lamp on when the weather is bad.

big hugs, they are such lovely little creatures, I’m so sad for you.

Ashleigh457 · 23/05/2023 21:23

Did your tortoise die because he forgot to put him out, or was it a coincidence? Eg if it had been raining would the tortoise have been inside under the heat lamp all day, and it was just a coincidence that it happened on the day he had forgotten?

ComputerInitiateJump · 23/05/2023 21:33

So sorry op. What an awful shock for you. Pets are such a huge part of our lives. I've always been devastated when one of ours had died. Take it easy on yourself, it was not your fault. Your dh made a huge mistake but he didn't mean for it to happen. He must feel terrible.
Sending love ❤️

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 23/05/2023 21:33

Rest in peace marigold. Sending you lots of love OP
