My pet just died unnecessarily

I’m really upset. I don’t know what I hope to achieve from this post- but I need to write down what’s in my head. I feel so heartbroken.
I had a beautiful pet tortoise. I know she was “just” a reptile and maybe she didn’t really care for me- but I loved her.
today I had to go in to work early and asked my husband to put her outside in her run after the school run whilst he worked from home. He agreed. He forgot. When I got home she’d gotten stuck upside down under her heat lamp. She had blood coming out her nose and was so so hot. I can’t get the of her out of my head. I tried to revive her- but she was gone. I’ve buried her in the garden and will plant a rose bush over her. I feel sick with guilt I didn’t put her outside myself- I chose not to as it was still cold here at 7 and the grass was damp. My husband sat in the same room as her all day and says he just didn’t notice. I’m so angry with my husband I can barely look at him. I know it was a mistake on his part- he wouldn’t hurt an animal on purpose….but I still feel so cross with him.

I'm so sorry op. That is just such an awful way for your pet to go. I feel so sorry for you. I'd be fucking furious too

ineedspace · 23/05/2023 21:04

Aww I’m sorry for your loss. This is really sad.

thecatsthecats · 23/05/2023 21:04

I'm so sorry.

When I was fourteen, my mum let my cockerell out when it was still twilight, rather than waiting til she came home from the school lift drop.

Half an hour later, she was back and he'd been killed by a fox.

It is an awful form of guilt on their part and anger on yours. Don't try to stop yourself feeling it, it will only feel worse.

GAWI · 23/05/2023 21:04

I'm so sorry. What an awful accident.

NotABeliever · 23/05/2023 21:05

I'm so sorry OP. Please post a picture of your lovely tortoise so we can all enjoy her a bit

I’m so sorry, pets, whatever they are, become a part of your family. Men can be very thoughtless it’s not surprising you’re angry.

I think you mean: People can be very thoughtless...

As evidenced by you, right there.

User565394 · 23/05/2023 21:06

I'm so sorry. We have a pet tortoise too and I'd be devastated if this happened. I'm sorry you had to find her too. How upsetting for everyone.

Hawkins0001 · 23/05/2023 21:06

All the best op

MuddaUdders · 23/05/2023 21:07

So sorry to hear. Sounds like an awesome tortoise and a beautiful friendship that you had x

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/05/2023 21:08

Oh bless. Poor thing. She sounded adorable. Flowers

askmenow · 23/05/2023 21:08

He f...cking cooked her!!! Disgusting.
Let him wallow in his misery. He needs to make a substantial charitable donation to an animal charity so he clearly goes without something he values. So he remembers!
How selfish and self interested is he to forget a creature entirely dependant on him.

Fanamarama · 23/05/2023 21:08

What a terrible thing to happen, I’m so sorry.

cherrypied · 23/05/2023 21:09

For Marigold 🌼
Rest in peace.

StayGoldenPonyGirl · 23/05/2023 21:09

Please add my condolences. You did your absolute best; take heart from that.

I had similar too. We had our guinea pigs in the conservatory over winter (outdoors in summer) but in the spring when it was still chilly in the mornings we would leave the conservatory doors and windows open during the day with the internal door locked in case it got too hot. One morning my father in law was round doing the school run and shut the conservatory doors without thinking (he knew the system but just forgot). When we got back in the evening both piggies had heatstroke and sadly one passed away a few days later. I was so so angry with him but I never expressed that to him as I knew it was just an innocent mistake. Awful for everyone involved. So sorry for the loss of your tortoise OP.

SecretSwirrel · 23/05/2023 21:11

I’m so sorry about your tortoise.

Yes, your DH forgot but tbh I’m wondering if the heat lamp thing was an accident waiting to happen. Was faulty or it turned up too high? Surely it shouldn’t be hot enough to kill whatever it’s supposed to be keeping warm.

LT2 · 23/05/2023 21:11

I don't fully understand how she died. I mean, I understand she got stuck. But kindly, couldn't that have happened at any time? It was surely just a bad coincidence that it happened to be the time when your husband forgot to put her outside? Maybe I'm misunderstanding!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope it gives you even a tiny amount of comfort that her suffering in those moments is over.💐

itwasntmetho · 23/05/2023 21:12

That' so sad, I'm so sorry.

EbonyRaven · 23/05/2023 21:12

Awww, cute pic @Luckycatyellowsky

Honeyroar · 23/05/2023 21:13

I’m so sorry. How horrible for you and her, and indeed your husband, who really should be feeling like shit right now. It was an accident, but it was something that could’ve been avoided. BUT it wasn’t deliberate, so while I’d be furious with him initially, he’d have to be forgiven.

Ostryga · 23/05/2023 21:13

Oh Marigold you sweet, well loved darling.

Thank you for giving her such a lovely love op. I’m so sorry you had to say goodbye.

So sorry for your loss OP. Losing a pet is hard at any time but for it to be so sudden and preventable is rough. Lots of love to you.

Sleep well Marigold 🌼🐢

She was so beautiful. She had such a playful nature and would try to bite my toes when ever I painted my toe nails. But yesterday she was stomping round the garden gobbling up clover and digging in the wood chips. I used to chat with her- I’d have do so both part of the conversation and I gave her a posh voice. I thought she’d out live me tbh.

Love that you gave her a posh voice 🥺 I'm so sorry for your loss - RIP Marigold 🐢💔
