So 290 (including the front bench) wanted to keep their powder dry?

I guess it's very hard to stand behind the legislation they presented and supported whilst the Telegraph are busy telling its readership that it was all a huge error.

I think in this case despite lying to our faces daily they know that many of them also broke rules and can't hold someone else to account because when the inquiery shows they did then they can also be suspended.

It's sheer self preservation IMO

You may well be right itsgettingweird.

Update on the Boris Johnson phone that was switched off in April 2021 and to be never switched on again

Times reporting that covid inquiry has agreed with Cab Office that it can be turned on by security experts

But here's a fun fact for you.

The phone has in fact been turned on again since Johnson had the security advice back in April 2021

Lord Geidt revealed as much when he issued Johnson with a telling off over wallpapergate back in December of that year

It’s amazing that Rishi has managed to gain this perception he was a good chancellor. Must be the comparison with the other complete waste of spaces we’ve been subjected to in other ministerial positions.

£21 billion lost to fraud. £11 billion lost to missed insurance payment.

How many £billions more of taxpayers money can he throw away before he's chucked out? He's lost more than Liz Truss did.

I think he probably benefitted from being seen as the furlough architect, initially at least. Plus he was actually in the job for more than 5 minutes, which is more than can be said for most of the recent post holders. Some of it's probably just face and name recognition.

But yeah, he's not exactly done much to deserve any positive perceptions!

Cornettoninja · 06/06/2023 16:59

@MrTiddlesTheCat Shock

There’s just so much to wade through with this government you forget stuff. The insurance thing was glossed over pretty quickly if I recall correctly.

….and yet I was still one of those who briefly sighed in relief when he took over as PM in the vain hope a proper grown up was finally in place 🤦‍♀️

Cornettoninja · 06/06/2023 17:01

I’m not even sure how that happened. I might be wrong but I’m sure in the early days of 2020 he was dead set against any response to Covid.

These priority suppliers received £6 billion of the £7.9 billion of testing contracts awarded between May 2020 to March 2021.27 .The PAC has been asked by Parliament to examine the papers relating to government contracts for the supply of PPE by PPE Medpro which secured two contracts worth a combined value of over £200 million and is now the subject of an investigation by the National Crime Agency into potential fraud."

Never really gets any less shocking.

Integrity, honesty and all that...

It is difficult to see how Britain would be in the position it is in now – weakened politically and economically … –if a truly independent and accountable press had provided the necessary checks on power all healthy democracies need

More from Prince Harry. Whatever you think of him, he’s not wrong here.

I found myself quite concerned that I was agreeing with Harry when I heard that.
If the press manage to make life utterly miserable for no good reason for someone who has all the advantages that Harry has, what must it be like for other victims of their witch hunts?

The cabinet office’s position is that they are working out their position.

Not sure the cabinet office lawyer is entirely convinced by their position here.

I have to say I thought I misheard that when I heard it on the radio.
Is Boris Prime Minister again? We won't even start to think about making a decision until we have left it far too late and only have bad options left....

It's Rayner v Dowden at PMQs today

OP posts:
L1ttledrummergirl · 07/06/2023 12:11

Oliver Dowden actually just brought up Raynors headphones. What the actual fuck!
He is coming across as a total knob. Thicker than the current and last two pms put together. How the hell is he in charge of a biro let alone the country in the absence of Sunak (running scared from PMqs, or touting for business for his fil?)?

Go Raynor. I await his insipid remark.

DuncinToffee · 07/06/2023 12:14

Sunak is in the US, I saw one of those weird photos with him on the plane surrounded by journalists

I find Dowden most odd. Like a throwback to the 60s. He has zilch gravitas.

Notonthestairs · 07/06/2023 13:21

Surprisingly I'm not sure Dowden's view on things can be trusted...

At Prime Minister’s Questions on 17 May, Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden claimed the government has provided “more than £3,300 for every single family” in the UK to help with the cost of living.
This appears to be incorrect. The Cabinet Office hasn’t responded to our queries about the figure and has failed to provide evidence to substantiate it. But other ministers and the Treasury have repeatedly used the same £3,300 figure in a different way when talking about cost of living support.

fullfact.org/economy/oliver-dowden-3300-every-single-family/

itsgettingweird · 07/06/2023 16:12

£3,300?!!!!

Even those who got the most support of all cost of living payments as well as energy payment and disability payments haven't received that much?

I don't even think if you include this years payments not comes to that.

It's such a shame they have to lie about things they've done that actually have been positive and a support. I was impressed with their scheme - so at least be honest about what it includes 🙄

Fladdermus · 07/06/2023 19:03

It's an admission of failure. £3,300 is the amount they believe to be an acceptable level of support. So anything below that is failure. They have to lie as they know the truth is abysmal.
