So Sue Gray has gone the same way as Keir's beer, wonder how long the Stop Oil donation 'outrage' will go on for Wink

I watched that and was totally perplexed. Braverman lied on backlog of migrant figures. Fact. Yvette Cooper came to the HoC and asked for this to be corrected. She was very specific as to why what had been stated by Braverman was incorrect. Deputy Speaker said no.

"The way in which facts are presented in the Chamber is a matter for the Minister"
That means they can present false facts then?

"It's a matter of interpretation of statistics"
That means lies can be told in the Chamber then? Yvette Cooper was very clear why what had been stated was wrong.

I know someone who used to work with the Deputy Speaker, she definitely wasn't bright. This sort of decision confirms it.

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/06/2023 08:50

The cabinet office is turning into a joke.
I hope that the standards committee look into Bravermans lying. Surely they deal with more than one Tory at a time.

Doesn't surprise me. What she was saying was just so stupid and ridiculous I couldn't believe I was hearing it.

Everything seems to come back to him doesn't it.
That said I have a small amount of sympathy for anyone working with Johnson - he's supposed to have said "what more can I do to stand up to a PM who lies?"
Presumably the same doesn't apply to Sunak?!

Resign?

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/06/2023 09:33

The whole gentleman’s rule of not directly accusing people of lying needs to go. It was fine when lying at the dispatch box was the most heinous thing you could do in parliament. It’s quite outdated when cabinet ministers lie as a policy every time they get up and speak.

This. Once upon a time lying in the HoC would have been seen as wrong!

Meanwhile -

"The Sunday Times reported that 15 of the last 16 Conservative Party Treasurers were offered a seat in the upper chamber after donating more than three million pounds to the party"

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/06/2023 09:44

Exactly. Accusing someone of lying was considered really bad because you were accusing someone of lying which was bad.

We seem to have got into the position where lying is fine, but accusing someone of lying will get you removed from the house.

Thread on the Covid Inquiry, apparently it's also live on youtube

BREAKING

Covid Inquiry Chair Baroness Hallett says "As has been reported in the media, an issue has arisen between the Inquiry & Cabinet Office as to who decides what is relevant"

She confirms Cabinet Office invited her to withdraw her Section 21 notice, she declined.

Interesting to see Matt Hancocks WAs have been released without redactions - I suppose given Oakeshott has already read them there was little point.
But Truss' old department, the Foreign Office are clearly dragging their heels.

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/06/2023 12:36

I like her more and more. She seems to have integrity, professionalism and appears honest. She needs to stay in role.

The government are showing themselves for who they are more every day.

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2023 13:07

Oof from prince Harry

“Our country is judged globally by the state of our press and our Government – both of which are at rock bottom."

“Democracy fails when your press fails to scrutinise and hold the Government accountable."

None of which surprises me.

Hancock did say at the time of the Oakeshott leaks that he'd already handed his What's Apps over to the enquiry, before that point. I wonder if he'd given absolutely everything they asked for. Maybe he thought he might as well, since his political career was over by that point anyway.

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2023 14:16

Via Peston

In the vote to suspend Margaret Ferrier as an MP for 30 days for travelling while testing positive for Covid19, 28 Tory MPs voted in favour but 32 voted against. And the rest could not be bothered to vote. It passed because of Labour votes. Amazing how Tory MPs have seemingly become totally disillusioned with their own party’s pandemic policies. Their reaction to the Covid19 Inquiry, which Johnson created, will be lively

I'm not sure it's disillusionment, necessarily. They might be thinking quite hard about precedents.

Notonthestairs · 06/06/2023 15:00

354 Conservative MPs.

294 Conservative MPs abstained? 🤨

Yes they are thinking about precedents.

So 290 (including the front bench) wanted to keep their powder dry?

I guess it's very hard to stand behind the legislation they presented and supported whilst the Telegraph are busy telling its readership that it was all a huge error.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 06/06/2023 15:29

Abstaining should be a disciplinary matter. Do your bloody job!

From Carol Vorderman...

I could cry for us...

Fraud on govt departments quadrupled from £5.5 BILLION to £21 BILLION.
