Shops don't give a shit about the coronation, do they?

In Sainsbos today, doing some food shopping but at the same time, thought I would pick up a few coronation souvenirs for my DD to show her grandchildren, etc. Just a cup, teatowel, that sort of thing.
There was just a tiny part of one wall with some bunting, a few t shirts and tablecloths and that was pretty much it.
My earliest royal memory was Charles and Di's wedding and the memorabilia available for that was off the charts. I was especially fond of my Royal Wedding Rubix Cube.
Now I wouldn't call myself a fervent royalist (but I am a bit of one and do follow them) - however, just in terms of the historical significance, it appears that nobody gives a shit?
I appreciate I haven't been into town as I live rurally, so you might all tell me that the shops there are full of the stuff. I just imagined that the supermarkets might have a few things too. (Just for posterity, you understand, not bothered if I have a Charles mug).

By space exploration I was actually talking about all the research and work done in sending people into space, and working out if we can live on Mars - all an utter waste of money to me (and I was actually speaking in a world-wide sense, not just the UK - interesting how people in the UK are only ever interested in things happening in the UK btw).

Once again, if you seriously think that if the Coronation were to be cancelled and the money would be channelled into the health/social welfare/education system then you are being extremely naive, that isn't how things work, in any country. If you think that if there were no Monarchy you would all be paying less taxes I think you would be sadly disappointed - the money would be syphoned off somewhere else with no beneft to the average citizen. I can't help but wonder how old some of you are that you seem to be living in fairyland!

A lot of that research is done by private companies firstly and secondly it has massive practical applications.

Working out if humans can live on Mars as you so simply put it is a complex exploration of the nearest planet to us and can teach us a lot about our own planet and how it may change. Planetary science is hugely tied up with climate science and everything we learn about the solar system and the origins of it can bring about new discovers with limitless possibility. Just because you do not understand something does not mean it is useless.

Also please don't be so patronising, I was talking about the UK as a comparison to demonstrate how public money spent on one thing (which you talked of as though worthless) has achieved so much while another very large amount has been absolutely wasted year on year.

If that money was not spent on the monarchy then of course it would be free to be used on other things or for taxes to be cut. Just how do you think government and public funding works? What do you think it would be used on that could possibly be more useless than the monarchy?

If it were to be 'syphoned off' by which I presume you meant to say 'siphoned' to something like research projects then sure, it may not seem to have an instant effect on those less well off, but that is a very short term view of things that shows a very limited understanding.

No and neither do I. But fwiw our local Asda had plenty of coronation tat. Try Asda :)

Such a lot of landfill.

No more than Christmas, Easter, Valentines, Halloween, etc. all of these make loads of landfill, no one moans about them, I don't buy tat for any of these myself but I wouldn't just single out the Coronation because I didn't agree with it.

I would disagree with that. I think A LOT of people hate the mass waste that goes hand-in-hand with these occasions. I know I do anyhow. And moan about it.

HumanBurrito · 04/05/2023 20:31

Fucking hell a coronation kids party dresses for a fiver, single use tat straight from some Chinese sweat shop and destined for landfill. Sums it all up really.

Same here. I pretty much buy none of it. We're still using the same Christmas decorations we bought when we bought our first house nearly 30 years ago (have added a few more along the way but it's still mostly the same stuff).

User18546753 · 04/05/2023 21:05

We don't have Christmas decorations or anything like that, it's a waste of money like bunting for coronations, it's all the same and is just tat.

Sudeko · 05/05/2023 09:31

Did Party Pieces bring out a range on this occasion?

14 million people living in the uk are in poverty. Needing to use food banks, unable to afford rental properties, unable to properly heat their homes, the NHS is ruined, teachers are striking due to unlivable pay.

The coronation is a disgusting display.

This!

Many people are struggling to feed their kids right now so rightfully don’t give a shit about a pompous twat who is worth 650 mil parading around and charging the taxpayer 150mil for the luxury.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/05/2023 12:26

Well I don't know about decorative tat, but I could not believe the amount of 'party food' on sale in Morrisons this morning. Absolutely loads of salad bowls, platters of nibbles, large pies, cakes etc. It was like they're expecting the entire country to spend all weekend entertaining.

I swear my mum's still got a Charles and Di mug. Perhaps I'll sellotape a picture of Camilla over Diana, save me buying a new one.

😂

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 05/05/2023 14:36

@SnuggleBuggleBoo

Agreed. I hate all the tat and shite that goes with all these occasions. Does nobody give a fuck about the environment?
Prefer things that are useful all year round, I do not have the space to store seasonal crap and I refuse to buy all kinds of shite for it to be consigned to landfill.

RampantIvy · 05/05/2023 14:47

I just don't think the monarchy will be the same again after QE died. The jubilee was much much bigger than this.

I agree. I have seen a handful of houses with flags out, and a few coronation related bits in Morrisons this morning, but I think the current situation has coloured people's view of the extravaganza that is going to be the coronation. I think they could have scaled it back and been more sensitive to the cost of living crisis.

I will watch it because I don't mind the royal family.

We also have a beacon lighting this evening in front of my house, but I think it will be less well attended than last year's beacon.

Presumably all the union jack tat could be reused for royal weddings, jubilees, Britpop revivals, etc. The biscuits you can eat any time. Union jack jimjams/boxers likewise. The £30 cardboard cutout can be used again and again for you to take selfies with the King. You could invite people round to your house for that very purpose, or maybe even start an Instagram account where you take a daily selfie with HRHKC3. Go on, I'll give you a follow. What I'm saying is we don't have to take all this stuff straight to landfill. Not immediately, anyway.

Sudeko · 05/05/2023 15:10

The £30 cardboard cutout? I'll put one up if they pay me £30 😁

LadyWithLapdog · 05/05/2023 15:12

😂 daily selfie with cardboard Charles 😂 nothing creepy or unbalanced there. You could donate it to a school for their throw a wet sponge competition.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 05/05/2023 15:53

@Mostar

😂i loved your response. I'm such a misery guts aren't I. I don't even buy Christmas pajamas and I get irrationally irritated inside when people buy them for me and of course I can't say anything about it.

Tbf it’s a bank holiday weekend in spring/summer – you can totally ignore the cozza while still having picnics, barbecues, extra day for a hangover, etc.

I've seen quite a lot of tat, junk in shops and plastic bunting.

Fabulous for the Chinese economy, not so great for the planet.
