Shops don't give a shit about the coronation, do they?

In Sainsbos today, doing some food shopping but at the same time, thought I would pick up a few coronation souvenirs for my DD to show her grandchildren, etc. Just a cup, teatowel, that sort of thing.
There was just a tiny part of one wall with some bunting, a few t shirts and tablecloths and that was pretty much it.
My earliest royal memory was Charles and Di's wedding and the memorabilia available for that was off the charts. I was especially fond of my Royal Wedding Rubix Cube.
Now I wouldn't call myself a fervent royalist (but I am a bit of one and do follow them) - however, just in terms of the historical significance, it appears that nobody gives a shit?
I appreciate I haven't been into town as I live rurally, so you might all tell me that the shops there are full of the stuff. I just imagined that the supermarkets might have a few things too. (Just for posterity, you understand, not bothered if I have a Charles mug).

It's because a lot of people no longer give a shit, myself included.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Honestly couldn’t give a shit. Whilst yes it’s a historical event they country is in ruins, there’s no money etc etc yet we have how many billions to spend on this… yeah, it’s a no from me

The Royals generate more income than they cost. That's partly why they've remained so popular.

WhyDoesItAlways · 02/05/2023 19:23

Plenty of merch available.

M&S have a few nice bits in, tote bags, shortbread biscuits, etc. I've also noticed clothes shops having coronation t shirts and red, white and blue colour themes. It's good that the shops haven't gone overboard though as we have enough plastic tat for things like Halloween and Christmas.

Unless there's a 'control' UK (which is actually a republic) to measure against, I doubt anyone can conclusively prove this one way or the other.

OMG! That Jimmy Saville/King Chas one is brutal.

I think that the major supermarkets have staff who are paid well to predict/gauge customer demand. They’ll be aware that public interest is quite low for the reasons eloquently expressed by PPs.

Great idea re. cut price Colins on Tuesday. Let’s hope M&S over-ordered!

I couldn’t get past ‘sainsbos’🤢

You beat me to it. Even using the emoji I was reaching for...

Skybluepinky · 02/05/2023 19:32

Most shops were stocked up about a month ago so r running their stocks down now.

They could just give Charles a Jim'll Fix It badge and save all the palaver.

ChirpyChirpyCheepCheepBeep · 02/05/2023 19:34

Don’t worry, I got a Charles and Di wedding mug a couple of months ago from the charity shop. 50p. They even had two of them.

I also got an 1897 Queen Victoria golden jubilee mug for £1 so I don’t think you will have missed the boat - they will still be around in 126 years for less than you would pay in the shops now…

Always4Brenner · 02/05/2023 19:37

Preordered the new 007 novel and red (top already got) whit and blue clothes that can be worn after separate so not wasted.

lavenderlou · 02/05/2023 19:39

Most of the stuff I have seen to buy is food-related but the shops where I live have put lots of decorations up.

It’s hideous it really is.

Phos · 02/05/2023 19:41

There's loads! Loads of shops here are trimmed up and selling memorabilia. Maybe try a garden centre, that's where I got my stuff.

lopsidedgrin · 02/05/2023 19:44

I've noticed every funeral directors is union jacked to the hilt. Not usually the places I pay much attention to but the displays are so over the top...

Pencilsaremylife · 02/05/2023 19:57

it could be said you don’t give much of a shit about the coronation yourself. Plenty of stuff available on line if you really wanted something decent, instead you wait til the week before, go to 1 supermarket and are prepared to buy any old tat that they happen to stock just to have something with Chasilla on it. Why bother?

Mostar · 02/05/2023 20:05

Won't we all be getting KC3 coins soon enough anyway?

Getting your hands on coronation bunting in the shops around here is nigh on impossible. I took my granny in to town to get some and same everywhere: sold out over a week ago. Not even a flag left.

Username098123764591 · 02/05/2023 20:06

My daughter has gone to a little coronation party with her nana today so I brought her a little dress from Next £5 my mum said it really cheered up the older folk we will keep it but that's as far as I'll be going.

redspottedmug · 02/05/2023 20:17

I bought an M&S shortbread tin to add to my collection of M&S shortbread tins commemorating royal events that no one gives a fig about now. But the tins stack and are the perfect size to store stuff. And the biscuits are nice.

Dwightlovesmichael · 02/05/2023 20:17

A shop in town is had a stack of union flag doormats for sale.

I can recommend not getting one. My dad had one years ago and couldn’t work out why the local BNP oafs kept knocking on his door to try and get his vote until I pointed out the doornmat.

escapingthecity · 02/05/2023 20:22

Try M&S and John Lewis. I love a monarchy related mug or tea towel and have found several of each in various places online.

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 02/05/2023 20:23

I was actually surprised at how much coronation crap there was in M&S! Will anyone keep their crown shaped cushions on the sofa, or still be swigging tea from a mug with Charles' head on it 2 weeks from today?! There was even a picture book about the event at playgroup earlier. Which will be read... once? I thought Charles was supposed to be into the environment!
