Shops don't give a shit about the coronation, do they?

In Sainsbos today, doing some food shopping but at the same time, thought I would pick up a few coronation souvenirs for my DD to show her grandchildren, etc. Just a cup, teatowel, that sort of thing.
There was just a tiny part of one wall with some bunting, a few t shirts and tablecloths and that was pretty much it.
My earliest royal memory was Charles and Di's wedding and the memorabilia available for that was off the charts. I was especially fond of my Royal Wedding Rubix Cube.
Now I wouldn't call myself a fervent royalist (but I am a bit of one and do follow them) - however, just in terms of the historical significance, it appears that nobody gives a shit?
I appreciate I haven't been into town as I live rurally, so you might all tell me that the shops there are full of the stuff. I just imagined that the supermarkets might have a few things too. (Just for posterity, you understand, not bothered if I have a Charles mug).

Re the worldwide interest, I was in America 3 months after Meghan and Harry’s wedding. Upon realising I was British, an American very excitedly asked me “did you go to the wedding?” (No preamble, just that) and I thought whatever wedding is she talking about Confused Then I realised it was M&H wedding and I told her I watched it on TV. Randomers in America were definitely interested in the monarchy. Just as Harry’s book has sold worldwide.

Sainsbury's are selling coronation flavour crisps. I know because my MIL has bought some.😁

What do they taste of?
Musty rooms and privilege? Yum!

User18546753 · 03/05/2023 03:57

I bought Colin Caterpillar but I don't think OP meant food and that gets used anyway, it looks really yummy, there were only a few left of the large ones, if they get reduced next week, I will buy another.

The cost of the monarchy per year is estimated to be around £350 million , the cost of the UK space agency is less than double that.

The UK space agency employs 10s of thousands and creates a huge number of jobs

One of its main focuses and successes is satellite research which we all benefit from daily in everything from entertainment to national security to telecommunications

It also does hugely important work monitoring climate change and it works with international organisations to share data.

In answer to your question of how it would help the poor for the coronation yo be slimmed down, the answer is simply that the money could have been spent on the countless essential services that are chronically underfunded instead of on a big show lots of people aren't even interested in.

In the longer term having no monarchy at all would free up even more public funds or let everyone pay less tax. Not to mention that the vast amounts of lands they own and profit from could be used for much better things (either making more money for public services or making space for much needed housing)

Please do tell me if there is any of this you disagree with. I didn't really care much about the monarchy either way before but since learning more I have been really sickened by it and can't believe anyone who truly looks into it can think its a good use of money.

By space exploration I was actually talking about all the research and work done in sending people into space, and working out if we can live on Mars - all an utter waste of money to me (and I was actually speaking in a world-wide sense, not just the UK - interesting how people in the UK are only ever interested in things happening in the UK btw).

Once again, if you seriously think that if the Coronation were to be cancelled and the money would be channelled into the health/social welfare/education system then you are being extremely naive, that isn't how things work, in any country. If you think that if there were no Monarchy you would all be paying less taxes I think you would be sadly disappointed - the money would be syphoned off somewhere else with no beneft to the average citizen. I can't help but wonder how old some of you are that you seem to be living in fairyland!

Thank you for this. I’m going to buy the spoons.

suburbophobe · 03/05/2023 04:58

Haven't seen any commemorative boxes of tampons. Have they sold out already?

LOL. Love it!

ThankmelaterOkay · 03/05/2023 05:12

If people wanted to buy tat, Sainsburys et Al would oblige.

The shop i work in has plenty stuff.
Only half of Glasgow are interested in it. And they are eedgits.

Sectarianism alive and well on the West Coast of Scotland. I'm glad I'm ne none of that crap matters up this way.

Birthdaygirltoday33 · 03/05/2023 05:32

Try m and s for souvenirs

ProtestantsHateAbba · 03/05/2023 05:58

I work in retail. We have a small display of coronation related stuff and haven’t had to restock any of it- it’s not really selling, presumably because most people near me aren’t interested. I’ve noticed it in other shops I’ve been in too, no one’s having a nose at it.

Someone in Tesco knew exactly what they were doing there!

My mum lives in America. Within her friend group (surprisingly young) here is a strong interest in the royals. They got together to watch Harry and Meghan get married and again for the queen's funeral. Pretty sure they will gather for the coronation too.

ssd · 03/05/2023 09:31

Love tesco for thatGrin

I am in Scotland and our supermarkets have full on coronation party aisles going.

Scotland is more republican than England so I would have thought there would be more in England.

Thats why theres so much left, nae bugger wants it

14 million people living in the uk are in poverty. Needing to use food banks, unable to afford rental properties, unable to properly heat their homes, the NHS is ruined, teachers are striking due to unlivable pay.

The coronation is a disgusting display.

yup this, i do not care about his coronation

Zippedydoo123 · 03/05/2023 11:19

I think our new king may change the monarchy somewhat. Am hoping/ trusting he makes the right decisions. We shall see.

readbooksdrinktea · 03/05/2023 11:21

Nailed it in one.

Our Sainsburys had absolutely loads of Coronation stuff (including the creepy cardboard cutouts which now appear to have sold out!) My 9 year old went crazy for it all- we are now proud owners of a Coronation teddybear, biscuit tin and caterpillar cake! There were at least 4 different sections throughout the store which were Coronation themed.

Marvelous 😄

I tried the M&S coronation chicken crisps today. There was no hint of chicken (unlike Walkers) but they were spicy and herby with a sweet note coming through occasionally. I won't be rushing to buy them again.

Beezknees · 03/05/2023 16:27

Asda near me has a whole aisle of stuff in the "seasonal" section.
