Shops don't give a shit about the coronation, do they?

In Sainsbos today, doing some food shopping but at the same time, thought I would pick up a few coronation souvenirs for my DD to show her grandchildren, etc. Just a cup, teatowel, that sort of thing.
There was just a tiny part of one wall with some bunting, a few t shirts and tablecloths and that was pretty much it.
My earliest royal memory was Charles and Di's wedding and the memorabilia available for that was off the charts. I was especially fond of my Royal Wedding Rubix Cube.
Now I wouldn't call myself a fervent royalist (but I am a bit of one and do follow them) - however, just in terms of the historical significance, it appears that nobody gives a shit?
I appreciate I haven't been into town as I live rurally, so you might all tell me that the shops there are full of the stuff. I just imagined that the supermarkets might have a few things too. (Just for posterity, you understand, not bothered if I have a Charles mug).

Markies will do a commemorative tin of shortbread.

You can buy a life-sized cardboard cutout of the king in Sainsbury's for £30.

WT actual F.

Ooh, shall I buy a life-sized cardboard cutout of this old rich dude or shall I feed my family this week?

I’d cut the head off it.

I was in Hobbycraft with DD yesterday. Loads of Union Jack fabric and other bits on a stand. It was busy but that stand was totally deserted.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/05/2023 20:30

The Royals generate more income than they cost. That's partly why they've remained so popular

Popular with who? My Gen Zedder and Millennial have no interest and think tgeg ate totally irrelevant. And the majority of the country don’t support them. So popular with who exactly?

Wrong supermarket OP.
Tesco have the King Charles book, King Charles teapot and cake stand and teatowels. And random Coronation cuddly dogs.
Asda have the clothing side of things nailed.
Marks and Sparks have shortbread tins.

All the above tack I am not buying into. Nor did I for platty friggin' Jubes Wink

You could go for the commemorative coin or stamps.

GettingStuffed · 02/05/2023 20:35

Not tat but Waitrose are selling a chocolate jack Russell, ABIT like a Yule log, and it's very nice

User18546753 · 02/05/2023 20:38

The stamps with flowers on are nice, I bought some a few weeks ago, they are just normal stamps that you can either keep or use, I bought mine before price of stamps went up.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/05/2023 20:45

There you go, in case you missed it

Shops don't give a shit about the coronation, do they?
LadyWithLapdog · 02/05/2023 20:48

Or like this (this one is taken by me, the other off the net somewhere so can’t vouch for its being real)

Totally agree with this 👌 If Charles had really wanted to scale the coronation down he could have just plonked the crown on his head and be done with it. Shameful waste of money in this day and age.

And this would help the 14 million people living in the UK in poverty, how?? I keep waiting for someone to explain this to me - so far no-one has. How much money do you think is spent on things like space exploration etc., which doesn't appear to have any benefit to the average person at all? Yet to see anyone complaining about that.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/05/2023 20:55

@Aslanplustwo Oh, come on. You could have chosen a better example. Space exploration vs pomp & ceremony for an over-indulged man stepping into mummy’s job.

Mostar · 02/05/2023 20:58

Haven't seen any commemorative boxes of tampons. Have they sold out already?

Zipps · 02/05/2023 21:01

Perhaps people don't give a shit about this farce of a coronation because it's yet another example of people so far removed from real life, with far too much money, to whom normal rules (such as paying IHT) don't apply, lording it over us plebs.
I mean they might as well say fuck you🖕 to all the people struggling.

littlefirecar · 02/05/2023 21:01

"There was just a tiny part of one wall with some bunting, a few t shirts and tablecloths and that was pretty much it."

That is still way too much for something that is fast becoming a niche interest

Meifly · 02/05/2023 21:04

I live in a big city and while it's not many, some shops are going big on their displays which I'm finding very useful in helping me decide where NOT to spend my money 🙃

Choconut · 02/05/2023 21:05

There were 6 little slices of cake in a box in our Waitrose in the 'coronation' section - cost £7.

14 million people living in the uk are in poverty. Needing to use food banks, unable to afford rental properties, unable to properly heat their homes, the NHS is ruined, teachers are striking due to unlivable pay.

The coronation is a disgusting display.

Exactly. I cannot help but question the intelligence of folk who go along with it.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/05/2023 21:20

I couldn't be less interested, in fact I'm hugely pee'd off about the public expense and hard plastic tat, but there seem to be flags and hats in every shop I go in. Tesco's had a big display.

The cost of the monarchy per year is estimated to be around £350 million , the cost of the UK space agency is less than double that.

The UK space agency employs 10s of thousands and creates a huge number of jobs

One of its main focuses and successes is satellite research which we all benefit from daily in everything from entertainment to national security to telecommunications

It also does hugely important work monitoring climate change and it works with international organisations to share data.

In answer to your question of how it would help the poor for the coronation yo be slimmed down, the answer is simply that the money could have been spent on the countless essential services that are chronically underfunded instead of on a big show lots of people aren't even interested in.

In the longer term having no monarchy at all would free up even more public funds or let everyone pay less tax. Not to mention that the vast amounts of lands they own and profit from could be used for much better things (either making more money for public services or making space for much needed housing)

Please do tell me if there is any of this you disagree with. I didn't really care much about the monarchy either way before but since learning more I have been really sickened by it and can't believe anyone who truly looks into it can think its a good use of money.

LadyKenya · 02/05/2023 21:31

I think that I saw some tot out of the corner of my eye in M&S. I was not paying too much attention though. There was nothing in yer face, as it were.

Even if they did some people would still be fawning over them.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 02/05/2023 21:38

I know you're right, and this is a reflection of how miserable and hopeless things have become in this country. Whether you are a royalist or a republican, it's sad.

It's because a lot of people no longer give a shit, myself included.

There's also a fair percentage who have never given a shit !

The coronation is a disgusting display.

The coronation generates worldwide interest (and therefore income and tourism). It is definitely not money down the toilet - and I am no royalist. I don't give a shit about the coronation, it doesn't bother me either. But financially for the nation, it's actually OK.

14 million people are living in poverty and we've fucked our health and education systems. The one off coronation cost, which is very substantially offset by income generation, would not help any of the problems in the long term. I mean if you shared lets say £250,000,000 amongst 14 million people in poverty, they'd get a one off payment of less than a £20 note each. And there would be none left for health/education.

Anyway - my dd was looking at coronation stuff just for fun online and there were sets costing £90 (we were not going to be buying this stuff - she was just looking). The £90 sets were sold out. There must be quite a number of people with lots of money to spend. Lots of the other stuff was also sold out - all the china plates etc.
