Shops don't give a shit about the coronation, do they?

In Sainsbos today, doing some food shopping but at the same time, thought I would pick up a few coronation souvenirs for my DD to show her grandchildren, etc. Just a cup, teatowel, that sort of thing.
There was just a tiny part of one wall with some bunting, a few t shirts and tablecloths and that was pretty much it.
My earliest royal memory was Charles and Di's wedding and the memorabilia available for that was off the charts. I was especially fond of my Royal Wedding Rubix Cube.
Now I wouldn't call myself a fervent royalist (but I am a bit of one and do follow them) - however, just in terms of the historical significance, it appears that nobody gives a shit?
I appreciate I haven't been into town as I live rurally, so you might all tell me that the shops there are full of the stuff. I just imagined that the supermarkets might have a few things too. (Just for posterity, you understand, not bothered if I have a Charles mug).

Wait til next week, it will all be reduced.

Well they are inviting all manor or royals from all over the world the millions they must bring ti to the country plus the palace will have employed hundreds of local people for catering flowers etc etc that goes into the economy.

It might be all show but it does bring cash.

^^

But does it?? Hundreds of local people??? One day's work???

trisfreya · 02/05/2023 18:47

So you're both outraged that there isn't enough tat out there in the shops, but you don't actually want any of the said tat... ??

The little Tesco Express I sometimes got to had various bits.
Ocado does online too.
Coop did near home.
Maybe it depends where you are.

seeing coronation souvenirs in shops really annoys me. Basically, most people don't care and dont want to have to look. If you do want coronation stuff, then I'm sure you can mail order it, or something.

This coronation should not be happening.

greencardigangirl · 02/05/2023 18:51

When people are putting products back on shelves because they are struggling to buy a weekly shop, I think most won't give a shiny shit if there are no flags and mugs for sale to 'celebrate' a privileged family who wouldn't know a thing about what it is like to have to make money stretch.

GoodChat · 02/05/2023 18:51

Loads of shops near us have coronation tat.

Quent · 02/05/2023 18:52

Yeah, I was pleased to note that there's not much tat about and most of it quite generic union-jack/blue-white-red/vaguely-royal themed stuff that could theoretically be rolled out for the next royal wedding/birth/coronation if you're the kind of person to buy it in the first place.

Sainsbury's wanted £15(!) for a laughably crap cardboard cake stand shaped like a red bus, though, the chancers. I can't imagine even the most fervent royalist coughing up for one of those, so I guess they're going straight to landfill.

Topseyt123 · 02/05/2023 18:53

How do you know that your DD and her grandchildren will be interested in the royals?

Summerpetal · 02/05/2023 18:53

Oh god ,does that mean shops and coffee shops are going to be closed on Monday then

User18546753 · 02/05/2023 18:58

Why would shops be closed on Monday, they are usually open bank holidays, they won't want to lose all that custom that is off work

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/05/2023 18:59

I think it’s hard to get excited

a) so soon after the jubilee

b) about someone who is pension aged and shop soiled (I don’t mind Charles and I am sorry that this is ageist - but at his age and with his track record you cannot read as The Bright Future, and for people to get behind you as the new monarch you have to)

c) cost of living crisis and general sense the world is going to hell in a handcart - I think William’s relative youth and young happy family (not to mention Harry drama) would have ridden this, but Charles can’t.

But hopefully it will deliver the £1 billion in global investment and tourists numbers they say it will. 🤞

14 million people living in the uk are in poverty. Needing to use food banks, unable to afford rental properties, unable to properly heat their homes, the NHS is ruined, teachers are striking due to unlivable pay.

The coronation is a disgusting display.

Totally agree with this 👌 If Charles had really wanted to scale the coronation down he could have just plonked the crown on his head and be done with it. Shameful waste of money in this day and age.

I couldn’t get past ‘sainsbos’🤢

The word Sainsbos makes you feel sick? How odd. CBT?

Queeniewag · 02/05/2023 19:01

Loads coronation merch in shops round me and high streets also decorated but I think a lot has sold out.

MaryJanesonabreak · 02/05/2023 19:04

Descendants of tyrants, bullies, torturers and thieves.

Hopefully because it'll be nothing but history by then. "Oh look, here's granny's mug from the time when people were happy to accept that a hereditary monarchy meant that some people were born better than others and were fine with being subjects".

Agreed.

There's mountains of coronation tat everywhere, how can you miss it?
It'll be landfill next week.

I could say the same over all the football stuff every World / European cup.

But I don't, because I recognise different people are allowed to think different things.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 02/05/2023 19:11

Intrigued OP, how old is your DD? 😂

completely different thing - some people dont like football, fair enough - but no one has a moral objection to the game itself.

Whereas this coronation is morally wrong on every level

StoatofDisarray · 02/05/2023 19:14

My local Tesco metro is selling plastic folding Union Jack chairs for £15 a pop. Tacky and useful for all manner of jingoistic "events".

TeenDivided · 02/05/2023 19:15

I think I could make a case for football being morally wrong

  • over paid for kicking a ball around a field
  • fans jet around the world to watch
  • increased drunken behaviour
  • domestic violence goes up during tournaments

I'm not sure I've seen a system I like better. USA / French president (close to getting a Le Pen last time), Chinese dictatorship etc.
