Shops don't give a shit about the coronation, do they?

In Sainsbos today, doing some food shopping but at the same time, thought I would pick up a few coronation souvenirs for my DD to show her grandchildren, etc. Just a cup, teatowel, that sort of thing.
There was just a tiny part of one wall with some bunting, a few t shirts and tablecloths and that was pretty much it.
My earliest royal memory was Charles and Di's wedding and the memorabilia available for that was off the charts. I was especially fond of my Royal Wedding Rubix Cube.
Now I wouldn't call myself a fervent royalist (but I am a bit of one and do follow them) - however, just in terms of the historical significance, it appears that nobody gives a shit?
I appreciate I haven't been into town as I live rurally, so you might all tell me that the shops there are full of the stuff. I just imagined that the supermarkets might have a few things too. (Just for posterity, you understand, not bothered if I have a Charles mug).

I have unsubscribed from the emails of shops pushing Coronation stuff (no, small family business jewellery store, I don’t want a silver crown pendant). The last cull had been with the condolences for QE2 and the Jubilee before that.

Pearfacebananapoop · 02/05/2023 21:56

I think after the Jubilee last year and the fact it's Charles it's just a bit "meh".
Even my 11 year old who loves a party said "mum I'm just not interested." !!

You can buy a life-sized cardboard cutout of the king in Sainsbury's for £30.

WT actual F.

Ooh, shall I buy a life-sized cardboard cutout of this old rich dude or shall I feed my family this week?

Those monstrosities were SOLD OUT at our local Sainsburys. I don't understand people sometimes...

The good normal priced stuff sold out ages ago

I bought a coronation biscuit tin and when I went back to get another one they were completely sold out

I just thought it would make a nice souvenir

I also got a £6 coronation tote bag from Waitrose

User2538309 · 02/05/2023 22:14

Shops will follow the money. Most people are just not that interested.

Simianwalk · 02/05/2023 22:16

I am proud to live in an area that appears not one person is interested in the bollocks that is the coronation.

HappiDaze · 02/05/2023 22:17

Actually my tote bag was from JL which I added onto an order but I saw the same one in Waitrose when I went to pick up said order

I can only assume they were bought by collectors who will keep them in the original shrink-wrap in the hope of going on that antique show Dickinson does, perhaps in the year 2073, and making an absolute fortune from some fuckwitted dealer.

HappiDaze · 02/05/2023 22:22

I'm going to watch it but I'm not overly excited about it, but its historical and I'm curious and love that I'll be part of history.

I'm definitely not anti the monarchy

It's quite nice knowing I'll be watching a part of history at the same time as many others. I kind of like that.

I also like watching England play in the World Cup for similar reasons or Murray or Raducanu playing. Or the Olympics etc

It all comes under the same historical banner for me

Can you imagine bequeathing a film-wrapped cutout of KC to your DC. They have to drag from one dusty attic to another for years and years, in the hope it’ll make them a bob or two? Your kids will hate you for it.

You say that like they won't make half a million quid on Dickinson's Real Deal.

@mostar see, just admit it, envy 🤢

14 million people living in the uk are in poverty. Needing to use food banks, unable to afford rental properties, unable to properly heat their homes, the NHS is ruined, teachers are striking due to unlivable pay.

The coronation is a disgusting display.

This.

I don't think many people have remembered it TBH
I've spent the past few weeks going "no closed that day"
Customer "why?"
"Coronation"
Customer "oh yeahhhhh of course"

I hadn't even thought the shops were going to be shut!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/05/2023 22:55

I didn’t even know the coronation was on Saturday until ds told me last week. I just sssumed it would be Monday.

MissEWeatherwax · 02/05/2023 23:02

The M&S Coronation Colin the caterpillar cake was very nice. 😋. The gold chocolate was very nice. Sort of caramel chocolate.

The coronation generates worldwide interest (and therefore income and tourism). It is definitely not money down the toilet - and I am no royalist. I don't give a shit about the coronation, it doesn't bother me either. But financially for the nation, it's actually OK.

14 million people are living in poverty and we've fucked our health and education systems. The one off coronation cost, which is very substantially offset by income generation, would not help any of the problems in the long term. I mean if you shared lets say £250,000,000 amongst 14 million people in poverty, they'd get a one off payment of less than a £20 note each. And there would be none left for health/education.

Anyway - my dd was looking at coronation stuff just for fun online and there were sets costing £90 (we were not going to be buying this stuff - she was just looking). The £90 sets were sold out. There must be quite a number of people with lots of money to spend. Lots of the other stuff was also sold out - all the china plates etc.

I've lived all over the place and never once seen a hint of 'worldwide interest' in the Royal family.

I've heard the same excuse (about generating worldwide interest and bringing tourism etc.) About the Chinese national day (Chinese communist party anniversary) celebrations though

The Royal occasions make as much of an impact there as those celebrations do here 😂

The most interest I've seen in the Royals is mostly occasional mild affection from those who think it's quaint or a couple of crazy Americans. Most people in the places I've lives and been to have no interest at all or think it's weird.

People visit the Palace when they come to London because its a typical tourist route thing to do, they'd do that weather there was a current royal family or not (and touring the former home of a recently abolished monarchy would probably bring in way more tourists haha)

Tesco had shitloads of tat for the loyal serfs.

DyslexicPoster · 03/05/2023 00:01

I bought a teapot in Tesco today, the man in front of me gave me a filthy look 😁 miserable fucker. I might fill it with G&T and drink from it on conference calls. That's something to turn your nose up at....

LINABE · 03/05/2023 00:13

Sainsbury's are selling coronation flavour crisps. I know because my MIL has bought some.😁

pizzaHeart · 03/05/2023 00:20

I think shops still have a lot of stuff. I don’t think our local Aldi has anything but big Tesco does. M&S has some pjs, t-shirts, biscuits tins, etc. I’ve bought myself a T-shirt from M&S but mainly because it’s suited me and I’ve had sparks discount. I might get us some interesting food for Saturday ( after all it’s a Saturday) but nothing more.

earsup · 03/05/2023 00:20

Asda has a lot of tat all from china of course....its all a waste of money...even royal mugs etc from the 1930's are worthless...i inherited boxes of the things and slung them in charity shops !!

bussteward · 03/05/2023 00:21

Does your DD have grandchildren yet? If not, for how long are you expecting her to have to hold on to a load of old supermarket junk so that she show some kids who won’t give a shit? I can’t fathom the mindset of wanting to buy a coronation tea towel at all, let alone one not only for someone else, but for hypothetical future someone elses to look at, that’s had to be kept in an attic for years with no story or sentiment behind it other than “I was in Sainsbo’s and a bit bored”.

”DGC, do come and see what Granny has – it’s a coronation tea towel! What? No, I wasn’t there. Your great-grandmother bought it in a supermarket. Well, a supermarket is where we used to buy our food before the great crop shortage. No, she didn’t need climate ration tokens – you used to be able to just buy things, for no reason! And she chose… this.”

Doubt it....I inherited boxes of royal mugs and plates from the 1930's etc, all worthless....millions produced even then, nobody wanted the tat....charity shop reluctantly took it all !!
