Good when I was a kid, a bit crap in recent years, awful now.

What other foods have turned to rubbish?

That's the one.

😂

We used to crush Flakes up before we unwrapped them, and then pour the chocolatey rubble into our eager little gobs.

Yes,and sometimes you'd get a stale one that didn't break up properly.

LunaNorth · 29/04/2023 19:01

My stash of New Zealand chocolate arrived!

I ordered a bar of Dairy Milk that’s made in Tasmania - no palm oil!

It was like we’d gone back to the 80s - DH was euphoric 😂

I’ve also tried a Whittaker’s peanut slab which was to die for. Rammed with whole peanuts - not the chopped up crappy nut dust you get over here.

Exhausteddog · 29/04/2023 19:37

I tried Tonys Chocoloney this weekend and was very underwhelmed. It tastes like Aldi chocolate to me

Didn't walnut whips used to have a walnut inside the chocolate as well as on top? Anyone remember that? And the chocolate was about ten times as thick, of course.

I knew it! I knew it! I remember the inside walnut, but when I mention it to anyone of my generation they look at me as though I'm delusional, and tell me that there was only one.

Seabrook spring onion flavour crinkle cut crisps.
Oh man those tasted good in the 90's. 😋
Used to occasionally buy a packet in hope, but now my hope is dead. 😭

See if you can track down Tayto Spring Onion crisps. They're not crinkle cut but they taste amazing. Tayto is a very famous Irish crisp company and you can sometimes find them in Morrisons or Asda

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 29/04/2023 21:54

@Delia123 OooooOOOoooo thank you! I'll do that. ☺️

nopuppiesallowed · 29/04/2023 22:16

Frys Turkish Delight - I used to love that. Now it's tiny and way too sweet. Horrible. So is Quality Street. Someone should take the time to print out this thread and send copies to all the different manufacturers or organise a JSO type protest...I'm feeling a bit militant, right now 😆

Lay's do a decent old-school style spring onion in large bags that you can find in East European shops. The supply is less reliable now than it was pre-Brexit, but I have some now, and believe me, crisps in my house do not have a long shelf life. They come in both crinkle and flat.
Seabrooks crisps for me come in two styles now: bland and terrifying.

IHeartGeneHunt · 30/04/2023 06:31

Lays do mushroom crisps as well, they're wonderful.
I'm adding Lipton iced tea to the list because it's now got bloody sweeteners in.

Baileys. Used to be really thick and gloopy, now the texture's like water.

Yes! I used to love baileys. But it’s changed in the last few years. It’s thinner, somehow sweeter and less alcoholic tasting. So disappointing.

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 30/04/2023 08:26

@Snippysocks ' JSO type protest '? Just Sod Off? 🤔

nopuppiesallowed · 30/04/2023 08:30

🤣😅 Just Stop Oil...

We can rebrand it.

LadyEloise1 · 30/04/2023 09:35

Try Aldi Milk Chocolate bar with Salted Pretzel.
It's very good.

JDEE72 · 30/04/2023 09:52

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I had to have a KitKat chunky every day, else blood would spill.

it didn’t matter to me that every time I ate one, I literally drooled over it, because I couldn’t open my mouth very well (due to a jaw thing).

Then… my husband returned from the shop looking nervous. He handed me all the lemony stuff he could find, then the KitKats. Except a tragedy had occurred. It was no longer the same thing. No longer chunky, yet still being called chunky. It was half the size. Pregnancy rage ensued, and in a fit of hormonal chunky denied anger, I sent an email to nestlé asking witaf had happened to them. (I was very polite, given the circumstances) their reply?
“it’s what our customers wanted”
😲🤔😧
to which I say LIES! No one wants a dechunkified KitKat chunky! Tis an abomination!
so I replied saying “not this customer 😧”

I had to go through the last few months of pregnancy making do with a so called chunky that I could actually get in my mouth.

I’m vegan now, so don’t even get me started on the wafer and air sadness that is a vegan KitKat.

Montbab · 30/04/2023 10:47

I stopped buying anything by nestle years ago. I got a fussy little kitten and the only food he would eat was felix as good as it looks. Until one day the packaging changed and suddenly he wouldn't eat it that either, one sniff and his nose would go up. I done some poking about on the Internet for an alternative and found hundreds of people saying since the packaging changed the recipe changed too and not their cats are sick and dying but vets can find nothing wrong and they were all certain it was the food. I don't know if it was or not but I'm definitely glad my kitten didn't eat it. I looked into nestle further and found a shocking story about them convining mums in Africa to use thier formula over breastfeeding despite them not having access to sterile water and many babies died. I know there are many companies doing many bad things for profit but to me killing babies is the one I can't stomach so I started a mini boycott (just me and my boyfriend)! Which I know doesn't affect them but still, I can't say I miss a kitkat all that much

Carriecakes80 · 30/04/2023 11:27

Flakes have changed too, they still 'flake' but before they would almost melt in your mouth, now they stay pretty solid and hard, not as much flavour. Smarties are my biggest disappointment, used to love them melting and watching them go white, the chocolate was lush, now the shell is gritty, they taste like the old style cheap versions that your granny would buy you from the pic'n'mix! Oh and chocolate oranges used to be lovely, now they're weeny n oily!!!

AutumnCrow · 30/04/2023 12:29

@Montbab, from memory the Nestlé boycott was huge in the 70s and 80s when I was at school and a university student because of this. Nestlé were, I understand, accused of giving out free samples of formula to the poorest mothers in the developing world until their breastmilk dried up, at which point they had to start paying for formula powder and use unclean water to make it.

It was a scandal that Nestlé denied was happening, and over the decades the company (in its many iterations) has repeatedly made denials and said it has changed its practices, lessons learned, deputy heads have rolled, that kind of thing.

A lot of older women like me with long memories for this kind of thing still find them hard to trust, and their behaviour impossible to forgive. Actual humans with medical and scientific knowledge helped to facilitate these hideous marketing decisions for Nestlé, and executives went along with them.

Cadburysucks · 30/04/2023 12:47

I didn't know nestle was that bad. Bastards. This information needs to be put out more.

LunaNorth · 30/04/2023 13:01

I have an update.

Whittaker’s Almond Gold.

Oh. My. God.

Whoever it was on this thread that pointed me in the direction of Whittaker’s, thank you. I won’t be pledging allegiance to old Charlie next Saturday, but I would to you.

mamabear715 · 30/04/2023 13:02

I'm getting on a bit now.. I remember Milk Tray with the Lime Barrel.. Dairy Box with Nux etc.. & Rowntrees was my fave choc EVER, it tasted so chocolately, compared to Cadbury's which was always smoother.
Can anyone recommend a non-smooth choc now? I note posters are saying Aldi / Lidl choc is nicer, haven't tried any, what do I go for that's not Galaxy-like? Thanks!

AutumnCrow · 30/04/2023 13:02

I've ended up boycotting so many companies, products, shops, supermarket chains and even entire countries that I've had weeks where I've batch-cooked* one huge vat of acceptable ingredients and eaten it all week long Grin

*other MN favourite past-times are available

mamabear715 · 30/04/2023 13:03

@LunaNorth ooh, thanks for the update!
What was the damage to import? (I assume you're in the UK?)
