I'm in Scotland and I bought Brannigan's regularly until about 4 or 5 years ago. Then I stupidly forgot about them. I regret that now.

Thepossibility · 28/04/2023 06:07

I opened one yesterday and ended up giving it to my kid.
Not yum at all anymore.

TeachesOfPeaches · 28/04/2023 06:15

@beachcitygirl yellow cap coke is kosher coke and available during Jewish holidays. It's made with sucrose instead of corn syrup

Oh I think it's bloody lovely. I like a Freddo too, and a Twirl. And Minstrels.

Funny someone said about Ritz crackers upthread, I had one this morning and was tasteless. I've got Bell's Palsy atm though, so I thought it was my taste buds!

I'm sorry that you have Bell's palsy. I had it a few years ago and it did affect my taste buds for a few weeks. Not sure though if it was the Bell's, the anti-viral medication or just the fact that my face looked so crooked and it was difficult to eat.

As for the chocolate, YES! Here in the States, most all of it just tastes like chocolate flavored wax. We do have a good chocolatier not too far from the house that is still pretty good. I used to enjoy Godiva but haven't had it in a while. They sold boxed chocolates that always had a white chocolate star with raspberry filling. I loved those and the chocolate covered cherries.

A pint of Guinness and a packet of beef and mustard Brannigan’s in Ye Olde White Harte on a Friday afternoon after sixth form.

Those were days. Those were the fucking days…

Now I’ve had to give up booze and Brannigan’s no longer exist.

Sad
FancyFanny · 28/04/2023 07:22

I had a a Ceramic bar not so long ago- never again. In the 1980s they were obviously not the good quality chocolate but they did used to be seen and creamy tasting. Now they are just gritty and waxy.

FancyFanny · 28/04/2023 07:23

Caramac obviously- NOT CERAMIC

LunaNorth · 28/04/2023 07:27

Chocolate these days might as well be ceramic, for all the taste there is in it, so I’d let the typo stand.

I've always called a Twirl a 'Safety Flake'. You can even eat them when driving.

'Safety Flake' - that's brilliant!

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 28/04/2023 08:56

In a thread on MN about how to treat a cold, there were a lot of suggestions for hot Ribena. Can’t abide the stuff, but especially when hot, because of the sweeteners.
Someone suggested buying Rocks squashes, as they still use sugar in their recipe. I think someone also suggested an M&S version too.

I can recommend Rocks blackcurrant hot or cold.

@ComeOnThenFanny ·
Tony's Chocoloney is the way to go. It's really expensive, I only get it when it's on offer - but my god, it's worth it.

True. I always hated Kitkat anyway.

Is your life still worth living? 😳

Lindt is crap.

I agree, Lindt is bland, unchocolatey and too sweet for me.

£7.55 for a 250g block of Whittakers???? That's crazy expensive.I suppose there are export costs.

I think the solution is for you all to eat lots of Whittakers so it can be exported in bulk.

If they start to export in bulk and become ultra-successful and profitable some awful multinational will take them over and ruin their chocolate.

Difficult to say, really.

'Safety Flake' - that's brilliant!

But don't know about you... but the Flakes used to "shatter" when we bit into them. Had to hold the opened wrapper to catch the pieces ....in case a morsel escaped 😂A mega feat on the school bus!
Now I can bite them in half with hardly any mess and in two bites are gone.

I'm sure they're using palm oil in those aswell or they wouldn't bind. There not the crunch in those that there used to be.
Notably these companies are all registered in Dublin where the Corporation Tax is 12.5%!
WTF are our Government doing by raising our Corp tax rate!
But lets not go there

LunaNorth · 28/04/2023 13:28

We used to crush Flakes up before we unwrapped them, and then pour the chocolatey rubble into our eager little gobs.

Mostar · 28/04/2023 13:45

On a similar note, is it still socially acceptable to tip the last fragments from a bag of crisps straight into your mouth? And what happened to crisp packets that you could blow up and burst?

LadyEloise1 · 28/04/2023 14:07

You can keep your TimTams. Sorry but they really aren't nice.

DahliaMacNamara · 28/04/2023 15:10

Yeah, never got the TimTams hype. I'm not much into biscuits though. I think they have a bit more bite than a Penguin, if that's what people like. They both seem a bit dull to me.

Fruit Pastilles, Fruit Gums, Dairy Milk. Gone, all gone…

Increasingly I've noticed the the contents of these have changed from Gelatine base to starch base to satisfy the Vegetarian / vegan cohort. And proudly displaying the relevant accreditation stamp on the packet.

Saves the companies money having to make two types.

I hope you're not saying the big multinationals plan to converge all these products into a single item and that we (and our pets) will be eating nothing this weird brown mush.

‘It's a single-celled protein combined with synthetic aminos, vitamins and minerals. Everything the body needs.’

That's the one.

Mostar · 28/04/2023 18:35

And if it's not that, then it'll be Soylent Green.
