Good when I was a kid, a bit crap in recent years, awful now.

What other foods have turned to rubbish?

M&S did a fabulous dark milk chocolate bar with dried raspberries.
Discontinued sadly.

Lidl does a dark chocolate and raspberry one that's quite nice

Didn't walnut whips used to have a walnut inside the chocolate as well as on top? Anyone remember that? And the chocolate was about ten times as thick, of course.

Yes they did have a walnut inside. The filling came in two flavours (coffee and vanilla) and you'd bite the walnut off the top, lick out the filling and then eat the shell (well, I did, anyway). WW's were my DGM's faves.

TomPinch · 27/04/2023 11:33

I'm in NZ. The kit kats we get here taste of sick, like American chocolate. I don't think that's because of palm oil. Cadburys isn't very nice but doesn't taste of sick.

I recommend Whittakers if you can find it. No palm oil, and it doesn't taste of sick. Actually it tastes like Dairy Milk c 30 years ago - lovely.

Tarkan · 27/04/2023 11:50

This place does amazing chocolate. The flavoured shards are gorgeous (the galaxy one and a seasonal winter spice one they do are my favourites) and the chocolate frogs and real honey honeycomb are wonderful. I haven't tried anything else yet but if it's as good as what I've had then it'll be amazing too. Grin

I don't even like dark chocolate much but I never say no to any of it from here.

They did this a couple of years ago, said it was temporary, changed back then did it again.
They're smaller too, and somehow less substantial. DH is devastated.

Why they want to mess with their packaging is beyond me. I am mobility impaired and have my shopping delivered, so there is no way I can recycle the new packaging unless I ask someone to do it for me. Think I need to find a more eco-friendly chocolate/biscuit snack!

I feel the same with chocolate etc.

Do you think this is because we all lost our taste with Covid. Der der derrrrrrrrr

Nothing to do with Covid, or even Brexit, this kind of thread predates both of those events!

Whitaker's shop in Skipton isn't there any more but they still produce chocolate, I've seen it in quite a lot of gift type shops. I used to love their Skipton shop, expensive but we used to buy the bags of 'seconds', we once bought a big bag of those squares produced for various companies and hotels, in our bag there were some from the Royal Yacht Britannia!

HarrietPoole · 27/04/2023 12:26

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain coffee walnut whips were divine.

TonTonMacoute · 27/04/2023 13:26

Its tragic how virtually all chocolate has been dragged down to the fucking horrible, vomit tasting muck the Americans like.

I could weep when I remember how nice Cadbury's Dairy Milk used to be. It was never great chocolate as far as the purists were concerned, but I loved it. Now it tastes absolutely foul.

Its not Brexit or Covid, it's globalisation to blame. The consumer gets no choice at all, we just have to eat the cheap ultra processed crap that the global industrial food companies deign to feed us, and the shareholders get rich on the profits as costs are cut and standards plummet.

The supermarket own brand chocolate is the best around, and Lindt is still nice too.

Easterfunbun · 27/04/2023 13:50

@TonTonMacoute

Yes. Supermarkets own choc is a lot nicer than Cadbury now.

beachcitygirl · 27/04/2023 14:14

Special K
It was lovely and then they changed it and it's like sawdust. They now say they are selling the original, but they aren't, it's still awful but less awful.

curlywurlylover666 · 27/04/2023 14:52

Yes I agree with you, I used to love it but it's rank now.

Based on this thread I've bought the last 2 tins of beans to try from M and S today and bought M and S white Belgian chocolate bar, which is lovely and creamy and not too sweet like the cadburys white chocolate.

beachcitygirl · 27/04/2023 15:42

Sometimes you can get coke with a yellow top in certain shops that tastes how coke used to taste. I don't know why & I don't know how, but it doesn't have that corn syrup rubbish and is made with cane sugar instead. Shop near me sells it but only at odd times 🤷🏻‍♀️

AskMeMore · 27/04/2023 15:59

I hate how these changes can be forced on us. I miss buying a bar of Cadburys chocolate in a shop I happen to be passing.
Also most cakes in coffee shops are rank.

Do you mean small Special K like they had in the 80s? That was great. You'd think one of the supermarket own brands would have copied that, but no.

beachcitygirl · 27/04/2023 17:26

@Mostar I do!!!

Mostar · 27/04/2023 17:31

Yeah, bring back small Special K.

Special Lowercase k, maybe. Get on it, Kellogg's.

xogossipgirlxo · 25/04/2023 15:59

Nestle Aero chocolate. Leaves weird aftertaste and kind of feeling like eating margarine spread. I shouldn't be surprised really with all this palm oil 😬

Try the Aldi version - SOOOOOO much nicer!!!

SchoolTripDrama · 27/04/2023 17:54

ReadersD1gest · 25/04/2023 16:43

Baileys. Used to be really thick and gloopy, now the texture's like water.

Baileys seems exactly the same to me??

Nobody’s asked what really matters. Where the fuck have beef and mustard brannigans gone??? 😡😡😡😡

THIS

SchoolTripDrama · 27/04/2023 17:58

@ttcat37 You can get them here https://www.chipsandcrisps.com/store/p1/Brannigans--RoastBeeff%26Mustarddx20.html

Given that I haven't seen Brannigan's since the mid 90s, I'd wager those crisps are well out of date.

ItsThePlayBusDingDing · 25/04/2023 15:28

Wham bars.

They used to be so sour, and sticky enough to glue your jaw together.

So disappointing now.

Likely the gelatine has been removed from Wham chews and replaced by starch to make them Vegan to cater for our diverse society. Never mind ruining the texture and taste for those of us that buy them.

Haribo have gone the same way. "Sour Sparks" were SOUR and gummy, now slimy with a residual saccharine sweetness. Ugh.

Whoiscomingtosaveyou · 25/04/2023 16:02

Toblerone sadly. Greasy and sweet with no actual chocolate flavour any more. They must have cut the cocoa solids right back.

AGAIN Toblerone owned by asset strippers Mondelez...

Experts in squeezing every cent of profit out of the gullible public with their SHITE offerings... Cadburys Diam, Milka, Cote'Or all with slimy, cheap palm oil additives
