What to do with damp microfibre cloths

WannabeMarieKondo · 06/04/2023 20:12

I use microfibre cloths in the kitchen. They are about 30cm by 39 cm. I don’t want to hang over the tap and don’t want them in the sink getting smelly .

I cannot find a caddy that has a bar to hang it on that is high or big enough. I ordered ine that looked ok, but it’s 25 cm high, the bar, and the cloth is too large to go on it .

Any ideas ?

What do others do ?

here ar some ex apples, not tall enough. They have pics of cloths in them but they must be small beciase I’ve ordered similar and had to send back.

I rinse mine in boiled water left over from making cup of tea. Then I wring it out very aggressively only then can it be laid out on the sink or tap. If you used boiled water it won't smell.

Why would you need to boil it ??

Tick it into edge of drawer and it hangs and dries or over oven handle.

It’s a small kitchen, but it’s part of the living space. Open plan, so trying to avoid things hanging over drawers etc

it’s up one end and is the kitchen and small, but attached to living room .

For you, I suggest a metal banana hanger.
or a banana bungee which is a clip that hangs from under the cabinet.

I like the sound of that ! I will investigate …

What happens with things that can’t go in the dishwasher?

Most can. Anything that can’t just hand wash and dry and out away . But only one or two things don’t go in the dishwasher .

hardly use the sink and keep it empty . So don’t want cloths sat there getting mouldy .

I use Superscandi swedish dish cloths.
Cellulose, Biodegradable but don't fall to bits.
If you lightly squeeze them out and leave flat in sink they dry out fairly quickly.
I use a fresh one every day and yesterday's dried out one gets chucked in n washing machine.
My pack of 10 is still going after a year of daily use. Every now and then the whole lot gets bleached

Googled and they seem smaller . So would fit in a smaller caddy .

I might get one for bananas as well. I never know what to do with them either , they don’t fit into the fruit bowl I have .

Love these! And especially that they go in the wash.

Are they smooth cloths .

But with open plan type places things like this cam make it very messy.

You can wash dishcloths in the dishwasher rather than the washing machine. So you could buy more of them, use once and chuck in the dishwasher if you don’t want them sitting in the washing machine.

NurseNeerDoWell · 07/04/2023 01:31

I would suggest buying enough cloths so you don’t have to <shock horror> see a once used cloth draped over the tap; or just getting a life instead.

Wavinggoodbyetoo · 07/04/2023 01:31

But I can’t get over the fact you think a caddy looks any better! Naff as fuck

I have more than one cloth , but it can be used a few times as isn’t used for very dirty cleaning up.

What do I do? Wash them daily with the towels. I have heaps but go through several a day.

It doesn’t have to be used a few times though. If the damp cloth is upsetting you this much, just buy a load of them and use them once. Then there are no damp cloths hanging around waiting to be used again.

Not exactly. They have some texture. Very good for cleaning and for dishes.

Wavinggoodbyetoo · 07/04/2023 01:38

WannabeMarieKondo · 07/04/2023 01:33

Why is it naff ?

Just no. No style, no taste, just too domestic.

Come on OP you want clean tops and no clutter… then a CADDY. Marie would not be loving a CADDY.

Time for a rethink

AliceOlive · 07/04/2023 01:40

Yes, exactly. Free standing. It is nice to have one for bananas, too and they’ll last longer. I might get one.

KateTheOccasionallyLate · 07/04/2023 01:42

Obviously we might have different aesthetic tastes OP so this might not be helpful to you, but I prefer the look of the cloth (rinsed well and wrung out, so is essentially clean but slightly damp) folded neatly and then draped over the edge of the sink, so it is a bit on the worktop and a bit hanging into the sink. A bit like a throw being folded and then draped over the edge/arm of the sofa.
(I am not personally a fan of the look of caddies in open plan, as I like the kitchen to look as much like it is part of the living area as possible.)

Surely a kitchen is domestic ?

You’re too far gone, beyond help.

Have you ever heard someone described as ‘homely’… same intention here when I said ‘domestic’

Marie won’t have one I can guarantee you.

How big are they ? I want a cloth that can hang on a caddy, or a bit enough caddy !

They are a bit bigger than my hand. So maybe 15-15cm
