What to do with damp microfibre cloths

WannabeMarieKondo · 06/04/2023 20:12

I use microfibre cloths in the kitchen. They are about 30cm by 39 cm. I don’t want to hang over the tap and don’t want them in the sink getting smelly .

I cannot find a caddy that has a bar to hang it on that is high or big enough. I ordered ine that looked ok, but it’s 25 cm high, the bar, and the cloth is too large to go on it .

Any ideas ?

What do others do ?

here ar some ex apples, not tall enough. They have pics of cloths in them but they must be small beciase I’ve ordered similar and had to send back.

You are going to get smaller microfibre cloths but stop using microfibre as it isn't good from the environment? You are going to buy another brush that will stand up when you already have a brush?

im going to get one of those Swedish cloths that have been recommended , or one of the others recommended . They aren’t microfibre.

I will get a brush and use it when the existing one needs replacing . Brush’s don’t last forever .

Why can't you just put them in your laundry basket? And if not, why can't you chuck them straight into the washing machine? Or am I missing something

I tend to use the cloth a few times during the day and they may last more than one day as don’t get very dirty. So they need to be somewhere before they get washed .

I present you, ghost cloth.

A washing up brush and cloth mash-up.

I think everyone should post pics of their dishcloths !

I have this. It holds everything neatly and will work fine for the smaller cloths mentioned upthread.

I have brush, cloth, hand wash and washing up liquid.

We have a built in pump for hand soap and another for dish liquid.

I use a small decorative bowl for the sponge, (which we almost never use, because the get smelly so fast) and lay the Swedish cloth over that to dry.

I also confess we mainly use paper towels to wipe up. We use a ridiculous number of them. I tried buying reusable cloths a few years ago and my (newly cohabitating) husband refused. Now I’m thinking about reverting back to these and putting a small bucket under the sink so we can throw them in there and then into the wash.

Also, our kitchen once had a door to our laundry chute, but it’s been closed off. We have discussed re-opening it. That would be a kitchen game-changer for me.

Or maybe they will make us all go back in the office finally then we won’t be wiping/washing up 6 times a day. Nor eating constantly.

This is a great thread!

I think someone said they stood their brush up ? Sorry, it might nit have been you, but someone did and I wondered of it was a different brush that does that ?

I've had brushes that stand up,I think from IKEA, little suction thing on the bottom.

@WannabeMarieKondo i use the Cellulose Superscandi grey ones from Amazon.
I'll admit to being evangelical about Cellulose swedish dishcloths!
While we're on the subject of tidy minimal sink areas, a big improvement has been changing from the usual long handled washing up brush, to a small circular one , they're usually called palm brushes.
Mine lives in a pretty conical bowl a friend made for me. The brush is pretty hidden and the shape means it doesn't sit in a puddle of water.
They are a little dearer but last ages as I found a long handled brush always got flattened on the end... These don't. Current one is well over a year old with regular forays into the dishwasher. Still bushy and brushy!

I don’t have sponges, but do have one brush for the odd thing I wash in sink, so if you’re all anti caddy’s , what do you do with your brushes and sponges ?? You can’t look those in hooks or over taps .
inout the brush in the caddy , but I can’t use that for the sponge . So a caddy for both I thought would be good !

I do! A small hook on the inside of the cupboard door. My wooden natural fibre brush has a hook.

It brings me joy… Marie is at one with that

matis · 07/04/2023 15:10

I stand my brush (it's a sponge scrubber thing with a handle you fill with washing up liquid) in the cutlery bit of my draining board.

The laundry chute? It’s basically a metal tube in the wall that goes down to the laundry room. It’s amazing!

Ours runs from our bedroom to the basement and we have a basket at the bottom that catches the laundry. The kitchen is between the two but a prior owner sealed up the little door to the chute in the kitchen wall.

I’m US based, maybe it’s not a common thing in UK? It isn’t particularly common here, either.

AliceOlive · 07/04/2023 16:40

Sorry, that was for @WannabeMarieKondo
