What to do with damp microfibre cloths

WannabeMarieKondo · 06/04/2023 20:12

I use microfibre cloths in the kitchen. They are about 30cm by 39 cm. I don’t want to hang over the tap and don’t want them in the sink getting smelly .

I cannot find a caddy that has a bar to hang it on that is high or big enough. I ordered ine that looked ok, but it’s 25 cm high, the bar, and the cloth is too large to go on it .

Any ideas ?

What do others do ?

here ar some ex apples, not tall enough. They have pics of cloths in them but they must be small beciase I’ve ordered similar and had to send back.

I thought it was just me!

And me. I use knitted cotton cloths, from Aldi. rinsed and wrung out after use and then folded into quarters and left on the side on a small saucer.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 06/04/2023 23:49

Would hanging it on the oven door handle work?

Shadycurtain · 06/04/2023 23:52

Sticky hook stuck to the side oF the sink, then hang it in the sink out of sight?

I suppose I was hoping there was one of those caddy’s that had a higher bar to put it on.

no radiator as a small open kitchen .

trying to keep the kitchen clutter free as it’s small, so not wanting hooks on the doors.

You don't want a hook on the door, but you're happy with a caddy on the worktop?

how about a rail inside your under sink cupboard.

Or one that goes over the top of the cupboard door?

I struggle with the in use one at the moment as I need it to turn the taps on & off fully. But hate it hanging around damp.

What a mad thread

You just use a cloth for the day, wring it out and fold in between uses and then pop in the washing machine each night

I have laughed at how you bat back every single suggestion though

The world has gone mad Grin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/04/2023 00:27

That's ok,isn't it? Won't make any difference to a load of washing. That's exactly what I do.

pastypirate · 07/04/2023 00:29

I rinse mine in boiled water left over from making cup of tea. Then I wring it out very aggressively only then can it be laid out on the sink or tap. If you used boiled water it won't smell.

OnaBegonia · 07/04/2023 00:29

Tick it into edge of drawer and it hangs and dries or over oven handle.

Kentishbornknitter · 06/04/2023 22:33

Why not just have it folded in the bottom of the sink when not using it? I get through 3 or 4 cloths a day and just bung them in the washing machine as I use them.

Because it sits there all soggy , gets wet when run the tap and gets musty,

I use a dish cloths like these. Made of a plant based fiber that can go in the compost when its to ratty to use. I fold them over a caddy.

How big are they ? I want a cloth that can hang on a caddy, or a bit enough caddy !

What clothes do you use ? And presumably those clothes still have issue of where to put them ?

I use Superscandi swedish dish cloths.
Cellulose, Biodegradable but don't fall to bits.
If you lightly squeeze them out and leave flat in sink they dry out fairly quickly.
I use a fresh one every day and yesterday's dried out one gets chucked in n washing machine.
My pack of 10 is still going after a year of daily use. Every now and then the whole lot gets bleached

AliceOlive · 07/04/2023 00:49

For you, I suggest a metal banana hanger.
or a banana bungee which is a clip that hangs from under the cabinet.

MidgeHardcastle · 06/04/2023 22:45

What's wrong with squeezing the water out and folding it so it fits one of those bar/caddy things? Can't see the problem myself. Failing that, hang it over the top rack in the dishwasher until you need to put it on.

I do fold it but then it’s too bulky to fit on it

I stand the washing up bowl on its side in the sink and sort of drape it over that so it hangs off the side

I don’t have a washing up bowl as use the dishwasher

Love these! And especially that they go in the wash.

If you're just wiping the sides, they're not damp enough to cause a damp issue.

You're making this unnecessarily difficult tbh.

I’m wiping the worktops and sometimes cupboard doors. Putting them in the sink gets them wet . And sitting on worktops looks messy .

Are they better for the environment than microfibre ? Smaller ?

I’m not keen on sticky hooks. Can’t use them on walls aS the walls have glass panels on them. Most of kitchen is cupboards and the walls and splash backs glass. Well coloured glass, pale lilac so not clear . Hooks would look odd on them.

I don't want to be Debbie Downer but hundreds of millions of tiny plastic particles go into the water every time you wash a microfibre cloth.

Microfibres from cloths and synthetic clothes are responsible for a lion’s share of the microplastic pollution in our streams, rivers, oceans, and lakes.
Tips on washing microfibres

I read that and stopped using them a while ago
Realised I needed new face flannels (I have about 20) so bought new ones for my face and now I use all the old flannels for cleaning, they work really well
Did buy different colours so I know which are which Grin

Because I didn’t want the cloth lying around, I wanted it on a rail on a caddy .
