What to do with damp microfibre cloths

WannabeMarieKondo · 06/04/2023 20:12

I use microfibre cloths in the kitchen. They are about 30cm by 39 cm. I don’t want to hang over the tap and don’t want them in the sink getting smelly .

I cannot find a caddy that has a bar to hang it on that is high or big enough. I ordered ine that looked ok, but it’s 25 cm high, the bar, and the cloth is too large to go on it .

Any ideas ?

What do others do ?

here ar some ex apples, not tall enough. They have pics of cloths in them but they must be small beciase I’ve ordered similar and had to send back.

How big are they ? I want a cloth that can hang on a caddy, or a bit enough caddy !

This is the crux of the issue. You just need smaller cloths.

And people have suggested some, which are also more green, and I’m going to get some. Plus the banana thingie.

Hang it over the tap. It doesn't look messy, its a kitchen cloth exactly where its supposed to be🙄 tbh a caddy sounds really fussy and a waste of space, you are making this really hard work.

Microfibre cloths are worse for the environment.

I didn’t know that , but I do know and will investigate the smaller more environmental ones people have recommended . So that’s been helpful.

I don’t have sponges, but do have one brush for the odd thing I wash in sink, so if you’re all anti caddy’s , what do you do with your brushes and sponges ?? You can’t look those in hooks or over taps .
inout the brush in the caddy , but I can’t use that for the sponge . So a caddy for both I thought would be good !

I just sit it beside the sink. If a caddy can sit there then a brush can, less clutter that way. I'm quite minimalist though, don't see the need for a container for a couple of items!

Ok, so we bought microfibre cloths years ago when they were being touted as the best thing for the environment. They are still going strong, I do wash them in full loads but am not switching to liquid detergent or low spin speeds as those have other environmental considerations so what am I meant to do? Bin them? They are clearly not going to bio-degrade.

But getting back to the question - a neatly folded cloth on a saucer (to save worktop dampness) looks far neater, is cheaper and takes up less space than any caddy I've ever seen.

What’s wrong with liquid ?

But the caddy can also be used to put sponges and brushes in . I don’t have a sponge, but do have one brush. So wanted the caddy to put all these things in.

I put my washing brush on my draining board. Because I have a dishwasher, I only use it to wash and dry the odd tea cup or glass during the day so it's not cluttered.

I wouldn't buy a caddy. My way of keeping my kitchen clean and tidy is to have absolutely nothing apart from my kettle and a fruit bowl on my counters.

Okunevo · 07/04/2023 09:22

Why is it messy on a tap but not on a caddy? Caddy is just additional clutter surely? Not at all minimalist.

Because the caddy can also hold brushes, sponges, hadnwash etc .

But brushes are quite large and laid down take up room, standing up in a caddy they don’t. And other things can go in the caddy, all in one place. So sponges, hand wash, washing up liquid, brushes etc l so in one place and tidier.

How does it stand up ? Mine is a standard washing up brush and doesn’t stand up by itself.

I think it looks messy to have open containers full of things, I just have the things I need out. Washing up liquid, brush, cloth neatly over tap.

WannabeMarieKondo · 07/04/2023 10:37

Something like this holds all the kitchen items needed for a sink, but it’s too small for the cloths . All things in the one place . I just want one that has a high bar for a cloth . How is that so difficult .

Oh, ok, I don't have that many things! If you don't mind all that clutter then I don't see the problem with a cloth over a tap.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/04/2023 10:37

Cut them in half. Still work as well and they'll be small enough to hang over the tap.

I rarely use cloths, just a sponge with light scrubby stuff on one side and microfibre on the other. Very neat.

When I do use cloths, (I do occasionally need them now too!), I got an over radiator airer and put it on top of the fence just outside the back door. All the bits and bobs went on there after rinsing out. And I put a suction hook by the sink for a dry clean one.

Maybe get smaller cloths??

I think if you are this particular fnd a caddy you like style wise and then find /cut a cloth to suit. If the cloth is changed every day like you say it is it isn't going to smell.

WannabeMarieKondo · 07/04/2023 10:40

These are the sorts of brushes I’m talking about, so laid down they take up room . And get knocked and moved about.
