Song lyrics that always get you

Just listening to a Spotify playlist and Time After Time came on... That line

"If you fall I will catch you, I will be waiting. Time after time."

It just always gives me a little well of emotion. My son needs me so much, I think it's just that feeling of need to be there.

There are so many lyrics that get me no matter how many times I hear them.... What are yours?

'Let her go' by passenger gets me every time. It reminds me of a really hard time in my marriage, which if I'm honest is still not resolved and I don't know if it will ever will be.

’All of us have wings, but some of us don’t know why’

INXS Never Tear Us Apart

"Cause I know I know I never meant to cause you no pain and I realise I I let you down. But I know in my heart of hearts, I know I'm never gonna hold you again"

Let it rain down on me by Phil Collins. Gets me every time. Such raw emotion.

Great thread, definitely welling up over here.

Some of mine have already been mentioned, including ‘I wasn’t expecting that’ and ‘You’ll never walk alone’ but a very recent one is Ed Sheeran’s Eyes closed, which he wrote about his experience of grief following the death of his friend Jamal Edwards. The whole song is beautiful but when I heard these lyrics for the first time I was transported right back to the first year after my dad died.

Everything changes, nothing's the same, except the truth is now you're gone
And life just goes on

So I'm dancin' with my eyes closed
'Cause everywhere I look, I still see you
And time is movin' so slow
And I don't know what else that I can do

"A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys
One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff, that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar
His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane
Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave
So Puff, that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave"

From puff the magic dragon. I always used to cry as a child and made my mum stop playing it. As an adult it makes me cry all over again as I think of my dc growing up and away from me. It's not as lyrically powerful as a lot of others on here, but the one that makes me weep most of all.

😭 😭😭

every single time. My kids think I’m short of a shilling.

Supermarket flowers by Ed Sheeran

Oh I'm in pieces, it's tearing me up, but I know
A heart that's broke is a heart that's been loved
So I'll sing Hallelujah
You were an angel in the shape of my mum
When I fell down you'd be there holding me up
Spread your wings as you go
And when God takes you back we'll say Hallelujah
You're home

Makes me cry when I hear this now. Before my mum died I thought then what a lovely but sad song, now it just makes me bawl my eyes out.

Clawdy · 06/04/2023 08:31

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You'll still be the one.

Macarthur Park.

jackstini · 06/04/2023 08:39

It's a verse in a hymn - I've never managed to sing the last 3 lines without my voice cracking

O Lord, over the nations now
Where is the dove of peace
Her wings are broken
Oh Lord, while precious children starve
The tools of war increase
Their bread is stolen

Annie's Song by John Denver. My dad was not an easy man to live with and he wasn't demonstrative at all, but I remember one day this came on the radio when we were in the car and he said to my mum 'this is my song to you'. Her name was Annie too, and it breaks my heart whenever I hear it - they're both dead now, and it takes me right back to that moment as a child when I realised their love for each other and the fact that love could be expressed through words in a song.

Not something I'd say anywhere apart from here, due to the person who sang it, but since the first time I heard it as a child, I have cried at "Two Little Boys".

"Did you think I would leave you dying, when there's room on my horse for two"

Another one who has always loved this song. One night, following a break-up I was feeling very low and having a pity party for one. A mate (not local) spent the evening texting me, trying to keep me occupied, and when I asked why he replied "did you think I would leave you crying when there's room in my phone for two?"
He had remembered I love that song and that's now one of my happiest memories x

My Immortal by Evanescence

DH suffered a catastrophic brain injury in a car crash and lived in a nursing home for several years until he died as a result of his injuries. He was obviously very badly disabled and didn’t know me any more.
I chose this song for his funeral - it kind of described how I’d felt through the whole thing.
I can’t listen to it now.

Just read the lyrics and totally get why it would be so hard to listen to it now
Absolutely heartbreaking and very real - so sorry for your loss

TotallyLosttonight · 06/04/2023 08:56

So many tears reading this! I'm going through a separation after my eyes were opened to what my relationship with my husband is really like. He betrayed my massively. I'm grieving the family life and future I thought I had. I'm not listening to much music as so much of it makes me cry. Sometimes it's good to let yourself cry though.

The one that gets me just now is The Reason by Hoobastank. It's sad as it describes my husband right now. Desperate to save our marriage but it's far, far too late for that.

‘ And I need you more than want you
and I’ll want you for all time. “

Witchita Lineman by Glen Campbell. Written by Jimmy Webb. My favourite song ever .

I love this too.

That's a lovely story!
worth remembering the RH did not write that song and there are other versions of it available..

You bastards, I'm in floods of tears at 10 in the morning!

Agree with so many on here.

I saw Lewis Capaldi at a festival for the first time, having never heard of him before. By the end of Someone You Loved, I couldn't see the stage through my tears.

Nowhereelsetogo90 · 06/04/2023 10:07

In my dreams, I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart, there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am, there you'll be

I heard this on the hospital radio while being treated for an ectopic pregnancy and it still makes me cry.

I wish someone would have told me that this darkness comes and goes
People will pretend but baby girl, nobody knows
And even I can't teach you how to fly
But I can show you how to live like your life is on the line
You throw your head back, and you spit in the wind
Let the walls crack, 'cause it lets the light in
Let 'em drag you through hell
They can't tell you to change who you are
That's all I know so far

I’m a really adventurous adrenaline lover and my DSD is similar and this always makes me think of us. I want her to always be unapologetically herself.

"Holdin' on to sixteen as long as you can
Change is coming 'round real soon
Make us women and men
"Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone"

Might be a bit of an odd one, but if I'm feeling particularly melancholy and wistful this'll do it.

John Mellencamp - brilliant song writer

The lyrics to Jackie Brown are amazing

A relatively new release actually.. think it's called how do I say goodbye by Dean Lewis

So how do I say goodbye
To someone who's been with me for my whole damn life?
You gave me my name and the color of your eyes
I see your face when I look at mine
So how do I, how do I, how do I say goodbye?

This song resonates so much... I lost my mam suddenly just after Christmas and honestly this broke me listening to it.

Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell. If it pops up in a TV programme or film I have to mute it quickly before my hands are too slippery wet to hold the remote, from wiping the floods of tears from my face!

Even muted I hear her sing this bit:

“I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions that I recall
I really don't know love
Really don't know love at all.”

And I’m a mess. 😭

I saw Judy Collins at a festival last year. It was in the middle of the afternoon in a field. She startedwith Both Sides Now in that crystal clear voice.
The whole field was suddenly full of weeping women.

Some Fantastic Place by Squeeze. It's about a girlfriend of Glenn's who died.

She gave to me her tenderness
Her friendship and her love
I see her face from time to time
There in the sky above
We grew up learning as we went
What a voyage our life could be
It took us through a wilderness
Into the calmest sea
Her smile could lift me from the pain
I often found within
She said some things I won't forget
She made a few bells ring
So simple her humility
Her beauty found in grace
Today she lives another life
In some fantastic place
She showed me how to raise a smile
Out of a bed of gloom
And in her garden sanctuary
A life began to bloom
She visualized a world ahead
And planned how it would be
She left behind the strongest love
That lives eternally
I have the hope that when it's time
For me to come her way
That she'll be there to show me around
Whenever comes that day
Her love was life and happiness
And in her steps I trace
The way to live a better life
In some fantastic place, some fantastic place.

The whole of, "When you tell me that you love me" By Diana Ross. It's about her child.

FlemCandango · 06/04/2023 11:15

'Who knows where the time goes' by Sandy Denny. The wistful lyrics, the beautiful voice. This song gets me every time I hear it.

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
And I am not alone while my love is near me
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes?

'The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes'

By Roberta Flack

Reminds me of my first love. Don't know why, it was a decades old song by then. I think I heard it when I was missing him and it stuck.

StarlightLady · 06/04/2023 12:09

3 come to mind:

The first is from Girl on Fire (which is my own personal anthem), I may be in my 40s but I'm a girl at heart, but a strong assertive girl.
"She's just a girl and she's on fire
Hotter than a fantasy
Lonely like a highway
She's livin' in a world and it's on fire
Filled with catastrophe
But she knows she can fly away"

The second is a contribution from KD Lang'
"Release yourself upon me, Free the hounds of chastity, Unleash your sexuality on me"

And the third is lighthearted.
"I kissed a girl and I liked it".

There is a song I found randomly on Apple Music by the Irish singer Stephen William Hodd, its called Saffron Walden.

The song is about addiction and losing your way in the world.

There's a line that gets me every time

"They've taken your blue suede soul and stripped it bare of gold, you should have listened to it, a part of you is missing from it"

Whenever I hear those lines I feel a little bit broken inside.
