Song lyrics that always get you

Just listening to a Spotify playlist and Time After Time came on... That line

"If you fall I will catch you, I will be waiting. Time after time."

It just always gives me a little well of emotion. My son needs me so much, I think it's just that feeling of need to be there.

There are so many lyrics that get me no matter how many times I hear them.... What are yours?

One love, one blood
One life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other
Sisters, brothers

One life, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other
One

I remember I cried when my father died, never wishing to hide the tears
And at 65 years old my mother (god rest her soul) couldn't understand why the only man she had ever lived had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me no words were ever spoken
And when she passed away I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally

Brutal!

Amerie - Gotta Work

Sometimes it's gonna be days like this
Sometimes it's gonna be rain like this
Sometimes you're gonna feel pain like this
Sometimes you gotta work hard for it
'Cause when you feeling low
And you can't get no lower
That's when you know your close
Sometimes you gotta work hard for it
Woke up in the morning
It's another cloudy day but
That never mattered too much to me, hey
'Cause it's still a new beginning
And I know I got it in me
Had my share of ups and downs
But now I know I can do anything

Appleabananasandpears · 05/04/2023 22:35

Now here you go again, you say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?
It's only right that you should play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound
Of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat, drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
And what you had
And what you lost

Fleetwood Mac, Dreams.
Always gives me chills for some reason.

When you love someone:

Sometimes moms and dads fall out of love
Sometimes two homes are better than one
Some things you can't tell your sister 'cause she's still too young
Yeah you'll understand
When you love someone

I don't know why but the bit about the sister really gets me

Everything about The Day Before You Came, by ABBA. And I don't know why!

Yes. Me too!

Our first post covid gig was Biffy Clyro. They sang Machines and the line "I'd forgotten how good it could be to feel alive". After the lockdowns and the restrictions this just triggered tears that I couldn't stop

Also One Republic I lived. The whole song. I'm playing it at my funeral to make everyone else cry too

“For one so small
You seem so strong
My arms will hold you
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here don't you cry.”

~ You’ll be in my heart, Phil Collins

Sang it to my tiny newborn when she was in the nicu. Still can’t watch Tarzan now, I cry straight away!

Elbow - One Day Like This

When my face is chamois creased
If you think I wink, I did
Laugh politely at repeats
Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin

Monsters, James Blunt:

Oh, well I'll read a story to you
Only difference is this one is true
The time has gone
I folded your clothes on the chair
I hope you sleep well, don't be scared
The time has gone
So here it is.

I heard it for the first time on the radio driving home from having said goodbye to my dad for the last time 😢.

@GettingThereCharleyBear
Oh my goodness, I've just listened to this and I'm absolutely sobbing.

My dad died earlier this year and this song hits hard.

In a funny way, this might just be the release I need. It's been a tough month.

Yirk · 05/04/2023 22:45

I would trade all my tomorrow's for a single yesterday.
Janis.

DeadButDelicious · 05/04/2023 19:39

It's the song we had played at my eldest daughters funeral. It's by Devin Townsend and it goes,

"Loving you is the best thing and the worst thing in my life.
Loving you is entire.
And loving you is the one thing that I need right now...
Centre the morning light where the worlds so bright and high.
Where even the gods outside can wait a moment guy...
And loving you is entire."

I can't talk too much about it because I just get upset but it's a very special song.

I’m so sorry for your loss.
There can be something delicious about a lyric that tugs at the heartstrings, when there’s no real tragedy to cope with. Your song about love takes it to a whole other level. I hope there can be healing for you too. 💐

IheartBTS · 05/04/2023 22:46

Jessie J’s ‘Who You Are’…..

”Tears don’t mean you’re losing,
Everybody’s bruising…..”

“It’s okay not to be okay”

For some reason, those lyrics have always stuck with me.

HippyChickMama · 05/04/2023 22:50

If only I'd thought of the right words, I could have held onto your heart - Pictures of You by The Cure

If I could know you, but only for a second really know you, I'd turn your scars into stars and light up the sky, let them see who you are - Steve's Song by Amy Wadge

Well you get one look, I'll show you something that the knife took, a bit too early for my own good, now let's not speak of it again - Don't Wait by Dashboard Confessional

GettingThereCharleyBear · 05/04/2023 22:51

@FluffySlippers23 sorry for making you cry but hope it helps. I still do snotty crying when I hear this and dad has been gone 3 years. It really captures that turn of relationship from child to parent. It’s very poignant ❤️.

Clawdy · 05/04/2023 22:52

I get along without you very well
Of course I do
Except to hear your name
Or someone's laugh that is the same
But I've forgotten you just like I should.

Best version is by Chet Baker.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 05/04/2023 22:53

Baby mine on the Dumbo soundtrack.

Genuine sobs everytime I hear it.

A Winters Tale

"While I stand alone, a bell is ringing far away
I wonder if you hear, I wonder if you're listening, I wonder where you are Today

Good Luck, I wish you well, for all that Wishes may be Worth
I hope that Love and Strength are with You, for the length of your time on Earth"

😭😭

A song called Going home. I searched for hours to find an appropriate song for my Dads funeral and when I heard this verse it just felt right.

"Mother's there expecting me
Father's waiting, too
Lots of folk gathered there
All the friends I knew"

The last thing I said to him in his final moments was to go find Nan (his Mother)

Blinky21 · 05/04/2023 22:56

The whole of Landslide by Fleetwood Mac, Soon You'll Get Better, Taylor Swift and weirdly, The Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog

Dance with my Father Again, Luther van Dross. Not for me ( my Dad was a very difficult man) but for my children. DH and I are in our 70s, in very good health so far, and very close to out adult DC. I can't bear to think about how devastated they'll be when we're gone.

There is something about this song that always gets to me.

morey · 05/04/2023 23:03

There are so many good ones here.
I love Sarah Bareilles "She used to be mine" makes me think of the complexity of my teenage daughter

She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up
And baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine

And this one- Jeff Buckley 🥲

It's never over
All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over
She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever
