Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

Lying in bed on a stormy night imagining I'm cozied up in a cave, protected from the elements with a crackling fire and snuggled under a load of blankets.

The opening of the theme tune to The Darling Buds of May. It's incredibly calming.

The sound of rain splattering on the window. Deeply blissful.

Oh, I just realised the thread title is "weird" things that comfort you.

Ok, a weird thing is that when I'm sat in bed at night I sit scratching my scalp and then flick all the gathered up dandruff from under my nails onto the floor! I love doing this🤣

One of my favourite comforting sounds is of a peacock crowing. We had a park with peacocks not far from where I grew up and I remember hearing them from being very small so it transports me back to that time. They make a very melancholy, weird sound but I love it.

Also when I lay in bed on my back at night I can hear my neck kind of "settle" into position and all the bones/tendons slowly crack and pop - and it feels really nice!

Being in a laundrette.

Back in the early 80s there was a late night radio programme I used to listen to sometimes when I had terrible insomnia and all those irrational fears and worries would play on my mind as they tend to do in the wee hours of the night. I think it was probably a bit old fashioned even then but the presenter's calm voice and the weird music somehow soothed me.

Someone has put part of one broadcast of this programme online and if I can't sleep I listen to it. It's doubly comforting because it reminds me of a time when I really needed that comforting.

Reading apocalypse fiction. I love the juxtaposition of being tucked up in a warm cosy bed reading about the total breakdown of society.

idonotmind · 03/02/2023 21:11

Cooking
Watching the same tv shows
Reading the same books

The routine - boring but comforting

idonotmind · 03/02/2023 21:11

There was a shipping forecast thread on here a while back - now that was cosy!

70sWasTheBestMusicEra · 03/02/2023 21:12

What is a shipping forecast?

Rubbing my feet together.

Feeling folds of fabric between my fingers and toes. I cannot resist this. So folds in curtains, clothing, anything, I HAVE to turn my hand palm-side up and put the fold between my fingers. It's incredibly satisfying and comforting.

Being in a laundrette.

Oh yes. I love that too. It's the mix of warm clean air, tumbling colours and the excuse to do nothing for a while. Just sit and think or dream.

Emilypost · 03/02/2023 21:15

Going to bed almost naked immediately after a shower, The bed with clean sheets and blankets. Such a fresh feeling.
Reduced lighting then reading some fiction that I know well.

The introduction to Police At The Funeral. (Margery Allingham) Chief Inspector Oates walks from High Holborn over the viaduct in the rain. A walk I know well.
The an early chapter in The Toll Gate (Georgette Heyer) The ride in the rain over the moors.
Both of my books are disintegrating from use.

Sparkletastic · 03/02/2023 21:18

So comforting. My mum says it’s a return to babyhood thing.

PennyToffee · 03/02/2023 21:18

Sitting on a bus. Nothing to do except people watch or flick through my phone. I feel the same about trains. I'll get where I'm going eventually.

userxx · 03/02/2023 21:19

Being in bed with the window open, cool air hitting my face whilst I'm under the duvet.

MichaelKeaton · 03/02/2023 21:21

90s British comedies, the more gentle the better, and murder mysteries. And tea with a packet of Maryland cookies. And fresh water in the dog’s bowl. And a stocked fridge.

What is a shipping forecast?

The shipping forecast is a weather forecast on Radio 4 but not for land, for different areas at sea. If you don't know what they're on about it can be a bit incomprehensible, which is oddly soothing. It's even more comforting if it's the late night one, preceeded by a piece of music called Sailing By.

The metallic smell of old radiators warming up.
Getting a bit of hot glue or wax on your finger.
Someone sitting on my feet - DH is the perfect heaviness for this 😊

Watching Jaws. Makes me feel like I'm completely at peace with the world. Very odd.

I thought I was the only one! love it

Shoemadlady · 03/02/2023 21:33

Lying in a fresh bed when it's cold outside, window open a bit and the sound of torrential rain outside or being tucked up at night in a tent with the rai pattering on canvas, bliss!
Or just cuddling up with my children, there's nowhere else I'd rather be x

ZuckerwatterMaus · 03/02/2023 21:35

Msmunet · 03/02/2023 20:58

Same. I thought this was my thing didn't realise it was an actual thing LOL

Ohh yes , I also like doing this with one sock off and one sack on for a warm / cold feeling and then finally taking the remaining sock off .

adognamedrover · 03/02/2023 20:06

Sleeping with a towel on my pillow fresh out of the airing cupboard. Reminds me of being poorly when I was little.

Oh my goodness I used to do this! Goodness, yes that would comfort me too x

Maraudingmarauders · 03/02/2023 21:35

When you get up early on what is obviously going to be a baking hot day and you sit out on a patio or lawn with a cup of tea or a glass of juice and the world just smells a particular way, the morning sun feels just right on your shoulders and the sounds are just perfect. If I could bottle a single moment it would be that.

PennyToffee · 03/02/2023 21:36

I'm a bit fed up of being all cosy in bed tbh. I want light nights and the back door open until late.

Always4Brenner · 03/02/2023 21:36

My custom made duvet covers blankets around on sofa or bed. Hot water bottles.
