Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

Out for a walk just before a storm when the sky is dark. I think it's also something to do with negative ions.

Yes, the shipping forecast

Lying in the bath on a Wednesday evening and the sunsetting through the window and the sound of distant church bells as their practice goes on. That’s my absolute favourite.

a second favourite is walking past that church on a Sunday morning with my friend chatting away to me and our two dogs running on ahead. The church bells are chiming, the sun is shining, we have a whole lovely long walk ahead of us with a coffee stop and we know we will have a lovely sit down back at our own homes with our own dogs asleep on our lap afterwards.

the theme tunes of Gavin and Stacey, Kath and Kim or The Royle Family. Comfort watches.

Mammyloveswine · 03/02/2023 20:28

The lorries one made me smile as when I was little I used to go with my dad in his lorry and sleep in his cab sometimes! He had bunk beds!

Erm I find murder podcasts comforting! 🙈

But also shows like "great British menu" and "Jane macdonald cruises".

Food-sardines on toast are my comfort food!!

wherearetheturtles · 03/02/2023 20:29

The noise and warmth of a hairdryer or fan heater. Cosy shivers.

The Great British Bake Off. I don't know why. I don't routinely watch it but I find it a comforting programme.

Georgiethegiraffe · 03/02/2023 20:29

Thunderstorms and watching waves on a stormy night

iloveraspberryslush · 03/02/2023 20:30

Gavin and Stacey, the US office, sex and the city... Harry Potter and rom-coms.

Going to bed with wet hair (I used to always go to bed with wet hair as a child after swimming lessons). Soup for lunch on a cold day.

I also love leaning against radiators, as a child I used to lean against a radiator in our cold old house and read for hours.

Watching my box set of the original 70s Upstairs Downstairs is always pure comfort. Feels like opening up a big old dollshouse every time.

My heated throw is pretty bloody comforting too!

Otterock · 03/02/2023 20:31

the sound of pipes humming as the heating comes on

the look/smell of a traditional airing cupboard full of fresh towels and sheets being warmed by the hot water tank (reminds me of my grandparents house and there was a small crawl space at the bottom I used to crawl into to chill out)

watching trashy old tv like gimme gimme gimme

the general sound of a relaxed crowd (even though I hate being in them) - it means it’s safe and everyone is comfortable and there’s no apocalypse

AnonWeeMouse · 03/02/2023 20:31

Hilda the Cartoon on Netflix is like Cosy and comfort all in one.

And gently humming to myself when I've got ear plugs in.. the vibrations go through my body and it feels nice.

PennyToffee · 03/02/2023 20:32

Buds on trees and shrubs and everything turning green again. Another winter over and the gardens and hedgerows and trees are waking up.

wherearetheturtles · 03/02/2023 20:33

Getting under a duvet on the sofa. Like a pp - reminds me of being unwell as a child.

Note: this is a rarity nowadays

Rebel2023 · 03/02/2023 20:34

Rain on the windows
Hot cross buns toasted and a cup of tea
Buffy

Very specific but I grew up in a pub so always fell asleep to the murmurs of people talking and the sound of glasses being collected. Stayed over one night as an adult and it was so comforting to hear the pub noise

Blackcountryexile · 03/02/2023 20:35

Drawing our curtains on a winter's evening and seeing that my neighbours have drawn theirs. Makes me feel all is right in the world.

Jifmicroliquid · 03/02/2023 20:36

Watching any episode from the first three series of The Royle Family. It makes me feel warm and safe.

Walterwhiteswifey · 03/02/2023 20:36

What a lovely thread ❤️

I like at night time when you see the lights on in people's houses and it looks all cosy. Then love pulling into our drive and seeing the house looking all warm and inviting with the lights on to welcome me home.

Laiste · 03/02/2023 20:38

Blackbirds answering each other at dusk in high summer.

Heavy rain on the windows when you're tucked up in bed.

Airplanes going over when it's raining. Reminds me of being kid growing up near London.

byvirtue · 03/02/2023 20:38

A book about a village in Devon who created their own allotments from scratch. It’s so random, but the photography is beautiful and you get to know all the villagers who have plots. You feel like you know the whole village by the end of it, it’s lovely!

anxiousatnight · 03/02/2023 20:38

Noise of the dishwasher. Makes me think of having lots of people round for dinner, they've all been fed and are feeling nice and full, the cleaning up has been done and now we can all relax because the dishwasher is doing its thing.

wherearetheturtles · 03/02/2023 20:40

Heavy rain on the windows when you're tucked up in bed.

This has to be one of the best.

ofwarren · 03/02/2023 20:41

Throwing bread on the roof of the caravan at night an waking up to the sound of seagulls finding it at dawn.

girlmumma26 · 03/02/2023 20:42

A mug of warm vimto, reminds me of staying at my nanas house when I was little

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/02/2023 20:43

Plunging my hands deep into a box of Lego. Don't judge me, it's amazing

Dnadoon · 03/02/2023 20:45

OK this is weird but whilst having a c section the mid to late 50s anesthetist man absolutely wreeked of cigarettes and it reminded me of my Dad 🥹
I felt comforted.

Reinventinganna · 03/02/2023 20:47

Shoes off to feel grounded. Obviously works best in the woods or on the beach but anywhere will do.

Getting up before anyone else (I do this every week day).

Sitting outside talking to the stars. I have a big catch up with loved ones that are no longer here (luckily we have no neighbours to see/hear).

What book is this please ? It sounds beautiful.
