Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

Late night sofa cuddles with our cat after everyone else has turned in. We have a routine so when I start shuffling and say “bedtime”, he jumps off my lap, does a big stretch and waits for me to walk him to the kitchen for bedtime tucking-in to his basket. Same in the morning with first cuddle of the day, though DH usually gets those.

I like it when I wake up and can tell it has rained from the sound of passing cars.

The hot shower on my head and back after and energetic lane swim.

Putting my wool bedsocks on in the winter and burrowing down under the covers.

The dark house at night and all our familiar sounds.

What a lovely thread!

For me, listening to the humming of bumble bees on a warm summery day is quite delicious. Throw in birdsong, too, and that's me transported back to my childhood home with all the wonderful safe feelings it contained.

I'm another one for rain, too. I'll often play rain sounds (Spotify has some excellent rainy playlists) if I feel like zoning out for a while or need a hand dropping off to sleep.

What a lovely cosy thread. I love lots already said; rain on a tent, shipping forecast, Saturday football scores, smell and sounds of the sea, gentle comedies, watching the birds in the garden, etc.

I also love being in a hotel room when DH gets up first on a morning and starts quietly moving around, while I'm still snuggled up in bed.

The sound of someone eating crisps, rustling the bag, crunching. Or turning the pages of a magazine. Or both together.

And when I hear the kids together, chatting, giggling, getting on. It stops me in my tracks, makes me smile and feel all warm and cosy.

At the start of a long haul flight, when you're surrounded by people but know that no one is going to bother you or talk to you. You can just nap, read or watch a film in peace.

Getting warmly bundled up and going for a walk in the rain with a big umbrella. The tapping of the raindrops on the umbrella was so soothing. When I was a young girl I used to do this and take my teddy with me, having first put a dolls' knitted scarf on him, of course.

Wearing woolly knee high socks under your jeans or trousers feels incredibly cosy on a cold day.

The Casualty theme tune. It takes me right back to Saturday evenings when I was small and the Casualty theme music meant it was time to get ready for bed.

Omg yes! I've just been transported back to my younger years, being cosy in the house on a Saturday night, before I was old enough for a social life.

TheWelshposter · 07/02/2023 21:23

I live in a city, about 2 miles from the port, and in winter can hear foghorns in the distance from the ships around 5am or 6am when I'm lying in bed. I love it.

Everything about the Snowman film makes me feel soothed.

nervousnancy84 · 07/02/2023 21:37

I used to fall asleep to Family Guy and The Office and still find them weirdly comforting. When I lived alone I always slept with the TV on and also found it comforting that the late night hosts on those shite gameshows and news readers were sort of watching over me while I slept.

Also the sound of a hairdryer while im bed as it reminds me of being young and hearing my mum get ready for work, knowing I had at least another half hour in bed before I had to get up for school.

Mine mostly revolve around sleep apparently Grin

nervousnancy84 · 07/02/2023 21:48

Also, swimming pools. Not sure why. Maybe because they're warm and water is soothing? No idea but I just feel peaceful and comfortable at a leisure centre.

Classic FM playing in the car in the dark. Reminds me of when we’d been for a family day out. As we were driving back and my dad thought we’d all nodded off to sleep he’d change the radio station to Classic FM. I’d never fall asleep though, I didn’t want to leave him all alone!

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, love the thought of being in an American Diner late at night.

Watching rain (or even better, but extremely rare, snow) fall in the light of a street lamp. I can sit and watch that for ages and not get bored.

This is the sweetest thing I have read in a long time. Your Dad must be a special man to you.

Ah thanks! He really is. ☺️

I know a lot of people don't like them and I don't even live near the coast but there are a lot of gulls around here and the Greater Blackbacks have an amazing call which I never get tired of hearing. even at 4.30 am

The Shipping Forecast on radio 4/world service

Oh yes!!!

elm26 · 09/02/2023 20:06

Booking a week annual leave in the winter to just sleep in, read books under a blanket and binge tv series.

The sound of rain on a caravan roof at night, I grew up going to Devon on a caravan holiday by the sea and always loved hearing the storms come in and the rain against the roof.

Rubbing my foot against my bedsheet, done this since I was a child and helps me doze off.

Summer days, sitting in the garden with no make up, feet up, book and a cold drink.

elm26 · 09/02/2023 20:10

Ooh also the smell of my dog, he doesn't smell bad, just smells like home, I quite often bury my face in his fur and give him kisses. Makes me feel warm inside.

StanFransDisco · 09/02/2023 20:24

Watching Countdown. The little noise the letters make when RR puts them in their little place. Trying to figure out the maths question. Suzie Dent. The way RR tries to pre empt if the contestant is going to say vowel or consonant next. The 30 second music. Colin Murray's warmth and kindness to the contestants. It's like the cosiest blanket in the world.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/02/2023 20:38

Early morning while it's still dark, lying in bed and listening to the radio. Takes me back to being a teenager with no worries but homework and spots.

Watching Virgin River

Rosieblue12 · 20/05/2025 14:14

I love you smell of my dogs head, so warm and comforting.
I grew up in the 70's and 80's and i find comfort in watching movies and tv shows from that time, On the busses, carry on films, bless this house, tales of the unexpected. Hammer house of horror, i love old classic scary movies.
