Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

the sound of pipes humming as the heating comes on

the look/smell of a traditional airing cupboard full of fresh towels and sheets being warmed by the hot water tank (reminds me of my grandparents house and there was a small crawl space at the bottom I used to crawl into to chill out)

watching trashy old tv like gimme gimme gimme

the general sound of a relaxed crowd (even though I hate being in them) - it means it’s safe and everyone is comfortable and there’s no apocalypse

Omg I can literally smell your post. My Nan's airing cupboard smelled amazing. She still has the cupboard, but the massive tank is gone and it just doesn't smell the same.

Visiting lost loved ones in the cemetery. Taking flowers and tidying the plots. That might be weird to some but it brings me comfort.

Mine would be pretty much this sort of thing to op!

A nice mug of tea.
It can right so many wrongs.

overthinkersanonnymus · 03/02/2023 20:54

Getting in to a clean bed with freshly shaved legs. It makes me feel like I'm going to get the best nights sleep anyone's ever had.

Midsummer murders, diagnosis murder, murder she wrote, Columbo. Basically anything on itv 3. It reminds me of when My mum worked in a hotel in the mornings and I'd go either her in the school holidays, then we'd walk home, have some lunch and watch hours of 80s murder programs.

Getting in from a cold, rainy walk and taking off wet clothes. That makes me feel grateful for having a home to come back to.

Aldisfinest · 03/02/2023 20:54

The rain and strong wind. Only when I don't have to get out of bed, it's somehow comforting.

Sitting in the garden in the evening in summer, listening to the birds as it starts to get darker, then the bats appear. Watching the sky change colour. Then going in.

Rubbing my bare feet together

Lying in bed when there's a storm blowing outside or thunder and lightening.

Sitting on a feather filled slouchy sofa with a crackling log fire and a cat on my knee purring.

Clean, crisp cotton sheets, a hot water bottle and a cosy book like an Agatha Christie or Ann Granger.

Coming round from anaesthetic after a minor op and having the nurses fussing around me and tucking the sheets tightly around me.

Going to the hairdresses, especially when they wash my hair for me

@Dnadoon its called the

blueshoes · 03/02/2023 20:58

The smell of cigars. Not cigarettes, cigars.

It is rich and complex cloak and I feel safe wrapped in it.

merrymelodies · 03/02/2023 20:58

An adequate amount of money in the bank and all my bills paid. Wind chimes. The rush of air from the vent when the heating kicks on. Simon and Garfunkel. The scent of beeswax and freshly cut flowers.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 03/02/2023 20:58

The smell of the laundry room- clean linen, washing powder and sleepy Labradors .❤️

Evenstar · 03/02/2023 20:58

Heinz Tomato Soup reminds of being poorly when I was little and my mum looking after me.

Hot water bottles in fleecy covers and brushed cotton sheets with coloured stripes.

Ambertonix · 03/02/2023 20:58

Watching an episode of Marple, Poirot or Midsomer Murders whilst cuddled up warm and cosy in bed. Ive never seen who the murderer is in any of them as i always fall asleep before the end!

DH thinks I’m nuts when I do this but, when it’s cold and dark, early morning or at night, I love having a shower, wrapping up in a massive towel and getting into bed. It’s especially good in a hotel room after a long day of sightseeing/lots of walking. I don’t stay there until I fall asleep. Just long enough to get really warm.

JustMaggie · 03/02/2023 20:58

Opening the dryer door and pulling out all the warm clothes. I love the feeling of the warm clothes in my arms.

VeronicaFranklin · 03/02/2023 21:01

Watching reruns of Heartbeat, something strangely comforting about the nostalgia of childhood Sunday nights straight out the bath getting towel dried in front of the fire with Heartbeat on.
Also Dinner Ladies, and at Christmas watching constant reruns of Only fools and horses and Vicar of Dibley. Lovely escapism and nostalgia of what I feel were more simpler times.

I really like driving around country roads in the dark with no one about or on a really wet grey day. Something a bit peaceful about it, like the world is asleep or hiding and it's just me and the weather.

Baths, if I'm ever feeling stressed or depressed I run a hot bath and sit in the tub in silence for half an hour (pre crinkly) and it always comforts me.

When I'm tired I twiddle my hair, always have done since been a baby. Really comforts me and makes me sleepy/ calms me when stressed.

Totally agree, I love this feeling!

WinterFoxes · 03/02/2023 21:02

I LOVE the sound of a train or articulated lorry rumbling by in the early hours of the night. I don;t know why but I feel so comforted that there is life going on while I'm tucked up in bed. Used to feel the same about distant sirens when I lived in a city. So comforting to know that when someone is sick or in danger, other people are flying through the night to their aid.

user1465390476 · 03/02/2023 21:02

When I watch the late night local news on TV and at the end of the bulletin the newsreader wishes everyone a peaceful night. I find that incredibly comforting.

Season0fTheWitch · 03/02/2023 21:03

When I'm ill and have feverish dizzy shivers, so I tuck the duvet around my neck. I weirdly enjoy it

whatyoulookingfor · 03/02/2023 21:04

The sound of people laughing and music in another room. Takes me back to when my parents would have parties when I was a kid. Makes me feel safe and calm
