Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

@StayGoldenPonyGirl oh yes, Vosene! I’d forgotten about that smell. Also the smell of a capful of Dettol in the bath.

The smell of brasso takes me straight back to hot summers playing in the front garden while my mum cleaned the letter box and number on the front door.

Looking out of my window at the street full of houses where my mostly lovely neighbours live. There's always someone to chat to, to swap problems and sympathy with, to help out if we get stuck or who'll ask for help when they need it.

Very comforting.

Scenes in movies that involve people getting ready for bed, or in bed ( reading a book, chatting to their partner, doing stuff on their laptop etc)
Scenes in movies were it's raining or snowing outside.

Watching reruns of Heartbeat, something strangely comforting about the nostalgia of childhood Sunday nights straight out the bath getting towel dried in front of the fire with Heartbeat on.
Also Dinner Ladies, and at Christmas watching constant reruns of Only fools and horses and Vicar of Dibley. Lovely escapism and nostalgia of what I feel were more simpler times.

I really like driving around country roads in the dark with no one about or on a really wet grey day. Something a bit peaceful about it, like the world is asleep or hiding and it's just me and the weather.

Baths, if I'm ever feeling stressed or depressed I run a hot bath and sit in the tub in silence for half an hour (pre crinkly) and it always comforts me.

When I'm tired I twiddle my hair, always have done since been a baby. Really comforts me and makes me sleepy/ calms me when stressed.

I am a compulsive hair- twiddler, foot twitcher, foot rubber, never sit still, always fidgeting. I try and sit still but I can't.

The smell of cauliflower being steamed. Makes me think of cosy winter Sunday afternoons cooking a roast and also of my granny's house when I was little and we'd go for Sunday lunch. She'd have a kitchen full of steam and would warm herself by standing in front of the open oven after using it.

Classic FM playing in the car in the dark. Reminds me of when we’d been for a family day out. As we were driving back and my dad thought we’d all nodded off to sleep he’d change the radio station to Classic FM. I’d never fall asleep though, I didn’t want to leave him all alone!

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, love the thought of being in an American Diner late at night.

Watching rain (or even better, but extremely rare, snow) fall in the light of a street lamp. I can sit and watch that for ages and not get bored.

I get a prickly scalp and drowsy feeling if I am near someone perusing a magazine or newspaper. It's the sound of turning pages that does it! instant calm.

Have you heard of ASMR? This sounds very like that. If it is, you have many thousands of YouTube videos of turning pages to enjoy Grin

Hearing my musical genius teenage neighbour playing the saxophone so beautifully every Sunday morning.

@70sWasTheBestMusicEra what a lovely thread you started!

Diddelydi · 05/02/2023 12:44

Reading a Maeve Binchey book, especially her older ones.
@Tiredforfive45
Adrian Mole as well 🙂

Themildannnoyanceofsmaug · 05/02/2023 17:10

This thread is so comforting.

Pipe smoke, the smell of terps, and horsey smells. Church bells in the distance, bird song on summer mornings, the local owls hooting at night, watching bat's in the summer. I now have lavender and pinks planted in window boxes and the scent drifting in in summer is so goooooood.

Sitting on a long bus journey, alone, listening to music.

I have a comfort blanket that I've had since I was a child. There's something about the material that the ribbon trim is made of! I sit and stroke it against my face (especially my upper lip) or kind of make it into loops and tap it.
The more stressed I am the more I do it, it calms me🥰

New blanket for me but must have on the bed so I feel it’s there even in the summer 1 tog duvet if need me I’m not giving up my blanket.

Ahhhhhbisto · 05/02/2023 19:44

Instantly calm when I wear DH's dressing gown, but only when he has just taken it off ! Something about the oversized warmth and DH smell is so soothing.

Also the smell of floor polish.

Loq · 05/02/2023 20:37

The page in a tiger came to tea where they go off to the cafe to have sausages for tea!

Needhelp101 · 05/02/2023 20:43

I've got Mumsnet to thank for introducing me to the Nothing Much Happens podcast, "bedtime stories for everyone". The writer and narrator has the world's most soothing voice.

Sparkleshine21 · 05/02/2023 23:23

Having Phil and kirstie on in the background, any of their programs. Just soothing!

Commonsensitivity · 05/02/2023 23:28

The Shipping Forecast on radio 4/world service

Yes - and imagining gnarled trawlermen listening with a cup of cocoa before they hit their bunks - and being thankful for being snuggled up in my bed.

Many years ago, one of the presenters in an old fashioned BBC voice would end it with "Good night gentlemen, good night." 🥺

I go to bed with a hot water bottle and an ice pack ! Strangely comforting !

Eating breakfast that's been made by someone else. Even DP just chucking some buttered toast on a plate ans handing me a cuppa. It just hits different. I don't feel that way about any other meal, only breakfast.

Going for a walk on my local common, taking my ear buds out and listening to the nature sound and watching people playing with their dogs.

Getting home from a day with my family- my sister, BIL, 6 year old niece and 20 month old nephew all live at my mums while saving, and I often have the kids on my days off. They are wonderful and loud and chaotic and fun. But when I get home I like to close the door, take a shower, get in my pjs, have a tea or a wine and read or scroll in silence. No TV, no radio, no noise at all. Such a blissful contrast.
