Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

When you get up early on what is obviously going to be a baking hot day and you sit out on a patio or lawn with a cup of tea or a glass of juice and the world just smells a particular way, the morning sun feels just right on your shoulders and the sounds are just perfect. If I could bottle a single moment it would be that.

Yes! The warmth that you know is to come on that day.

Yes exactly that! Feels a very long way away right now (can you tell I'm a summer person?!)

I love having a "cover", especially the feeling of being in a "dome".
so when the sky is grey and overcast, I love it.
being in (even a very small) wooded area, where the canopy of the trees are protecting me.
Being in a car in the rain, the sound blocks it off.
I love being in a storm, the rain hitting the windows so all there is in the whole world is what you can see right infront of your face. You can't see further than your hand but it's OK because it really brings you into the moment.
being in a Conservatory at night or a caravan, with windows pitch black outside and dim lamp or candle light and you're safe in your little round caravan or conservatory (with a pointed top, a square one wouldn't feel good).

I don't know why but domes feel safe. I hate the idea of aliens so our cloud cover really makes me feel 'unseen'.

I loved covid, having to wear a mask and being unseen. I wanted a visor to be in my own little dome but a mask dod quite nicely (except it was so warm)

I absolutely love colour and texture. Seeing colours that look good together and feeling velvet, cashmere and silk just makes me happy. I'm in bed at the moment and I'm looking at all the throws and cushions I've chosen over the years. The colours are just delicious. My husband thinks I'm mad.

great thread!

I love the shipping forecast, and feel really off if I miss it.

Really heavy rain outside, when I'm inside and all cozy.

Being really happed up (oh, had forgotten that perfect word!) in bed and then lifting my arms above my head, until they get chilled, then putting them back under the covers.

The weight of the cat - tiny cat, but does not feel like it at night - holding me in one position for hours at a time.

The smell of someone smoking a pipe. Rarely see anyone walking and smoking a pipe these days, but I would find myself silently trailing a pipe-smoking, usually rather elderly, man for minutes before being able to pull myself away. Never wanted to try it, just love the smell.

I like napping on coaches, flights etc when there is the murmur of people talking in the background.

It makes me feel like I'm safe to nod off, as the grown ups are around.

I'm 47.

There’s a load of ASMR on YouTube that’s like this - kind of muffled sounds of music and people chatting in another room. It gives that comforting, drowsy feel of being tucked up in bed as a kid and drifting off to sleep listening to the grown ups partying downstairs 😊

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/02/2023 22:06

Peppa Pig.Its the pastel colours mainly but it's also quite amusing.

WhatITAbout · 03/02/2023 22:07

A bit strange but the vastness of the universe is extremely comforting to me.

If ever I am feeling stressed, overwhelmed or worried about anything then thinking about how truly insignificant my existence is in the context of the absolute vastness of the universe and how in the blink of an eye (relatively speaking when thinking about the billions of years the universe has existed) I will be dead and there will be no one who will remember or even know about the thing I am worried about is weirdly comforting.

I genuinely mean this in a positive way, I know I'm making it sound the opposite! But it really puts everything into perspective for me and instantly allows me to just let it go

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/02/2023 22:07

Reading the diary of Adrian Mole. I start it again every 1st January and have done for the last 23 years.

Love this!

When it’s quiet at night and I have my bedroom window open I can just hear the trains passing in the distance. It’s not close enough to disturb me. It’s just soothing.

This for me and buses as well when I am in my bed.

MuddyBadge · 03/02/2023 22:11

I have the hall lamp on a timer set for shortly after I'm usually in bed. Hearing it click off reminds me of being a child hearing my parents going to bed. It makes me feel safe.

EadnothTheStaller · 03/02/2023 22:12

Reading anything where the characters are eating is another one for me! This has been true as long as I can remember. For example, the picnic in What Katy Did, or the bit in A Little Princess where she wakes up in the attic and there is food that has magically appeared.

The Shipping Forecast on radio 4/world service

This.
I found a “ sleeep story” of the shipping forecast so I don’t have to wait for it to come on.
it’s poetry and the continuity team all have such lovely voices. Neil nunes best obv

The shipping forecast.

BlackCatTabbyCat · 03/02/2023 22:16

Hearing a train in the distance
Cars passing during the night
Falling asleep to an old comedy
Falling asleep to Air crash investigation Blush

Me too. When I wake up in the night, I silence bothersome thoughts by putting a space documentary on YouTube (just to listen, not watch).

I also love bundling myself up in bed with warm tumble dried washing.

And I've recently rediscovered a Touch of Frost. Lovely to be transported back to the 1990s.

More information needed please Helen - where can I find this?!

Thank you also to @SomethingNastyInTheBallPool for sharing that YouTube video.

As well as the shipping forecast, lying in bed hearing trains, motorway traffic and planes - why yes I did grown up not far from the M25 Grin

Standing outside but sheltered when there's a storm and it's absolutely tipping down.

Boiled eggs and toast soldiers.

Having my hair brushed or braided.

On a warm Spring or Summer night - having a shower before bed and then getting into fresh sheets, with the bedroom window open and a warm breeze coming in <happy sigh>

Rysimo · 03/02/2023 22:24

Also trains. We live in a very busy University city with two railway stations already. They are building another a two minute walk away from my home.

Hearing the engineers start work shortly after 7am and hearing trains travelling overnight is a great comfort to me.

baconisgoodforme · 03/02/2023 22:24

Lovely thread! Loads of things already mentioned on this but maybe a strange one..The smell of Vicks vaporub,it reminds me of being poorly as a child. I keep a tub next to my bed at all times,I sniff it every night and it calms me.

Commonsensitivity · 03/02/2023 22:24

The shipping forecast here too. But when it was narrated by the man with a calm voice.

My small living room too. It's cozy and private.

MotherOfVizslas · 03/02/2023 22:25

I have a comfort blanket that I've had since I was a child. There's something about the material that the ribbon trim is made of! I sit and stroke it against my face (especially my upper lip) or kind of make it into loops and tap it.
The more stressed I am the more I do it, it calms me🥰

EnjoythemoneyJane · 03/02/2023 22:26

My weirdest comforting feeling is aircraft turbulence! I feel bizarrely happy and peaceful if the plane hits turbulence, no matter how bad it is. The motion of it gives me a prickly scalp and puts me into an almost zen state of relaxation where I could easily drift off to sleep. I have absolutely no idea why this is as I’m really not a confident flier at all!

The sound of a distant train or distant dog barking at night when everything else is quiet.
The Vicar of dibley theme tune.
A cup of tea and a good book!
A bar of chocolate.
Church bells on a still summers evening.

I'm sure there's more....

Everything mentioned here. Also a cup of tea, hot water bottles, the wind blowing outside when I'm tucked up in bed.
