Weird things that make you feel comforted...

Not the usual things like kittens and hot chocolate. Just random things.

Has anyone got Netflix? You know Derek? Well the show in general makes me feel warm and cozy, because it's filled with care and loving characters.

But at the end of every episode... the channel 4 logo appears and that little chime plays (I can't remember the name for that!) but for some reason it makes me feel calm. Like it's nighttime and everyone is peacefully at home with a little lamp on under a quilt.

The crack of dawn imagining you're near the sea and can hear the sound of ship horns whilst still under your blanket waking up.

Driving past parked lorries in the dark imagining how nice it would be to be tucked up in one of those cabbies with a blanket and surrounded by the lights they decorate them with.

80s films, like ET, Stand By Me and The Goonies where again it's nighttime and the kids are all gathered around eating pizza or telling ghost stories with nothing to worry about because they're kids. Simpler times.

Being on a canal boat with the log burner in full works, or sat on the pontoon with a fold out chair and a bottle of wine in the evening.

Can you tell? I like nighttime and water 😃

Looking out over town/city lights at night, especially from the car. Makes me think of people all cosy in their homes.

The sound of the kettle boiling, the sound of the dishwasher/washing machine.

Norugratsatall · 03/02/2023 20:13

The sound of a distant train or distant dog barking at night when everything else is quiet.
The Vicar of dibley theme tune.
A cup of tea and a good book!
A bar of chocolate.
Church bells on a still summers evening.

I'm sure there's more....

Oh also inside nice normal chaotic houses. Lived in, life clutter, family pics up, maybe bot beeb decorated for a few years so still has bright wallpaper that's gone out of fashion. People just going about doing their thing. You can literally feel the love in the walls.

Should clarify, I am a paramedic, not a Peeping Tom. I'm invited to be there.

The sound of traffic outside in the early hours of the morning. The sound of a bus passing on the road outside my house. Makes me feel that life is going on outside.

I agree with this. I like the idea that the City Never Sleeps.

lozrox90 · 03/02/2023 20:15

The sound of motorbikes in the distance at night. I used to find it unnerving as a child but now it just reminds me of being little and safe and warm in bed.

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 03/02/2023 20:16

A washing line full of our pegged out washing drying in the sun.

GothSummer · 03/02/2023 20:17

Final Score. Reminds me of sitting on my dads knee whilst watching the football scores come in. I do miss the vidiprinter but still find watching it very comforting

blueshoes · 03/02/2023 20:17

The laundry spinning round in the washing machine. Not the spin cycle but just the sloshing cycle. I watch it and feel soothed.

Clothes pulled straight and drying on a line or an airer. Evaporation. Peace and order.

elp30 · 03/02/2023 20:17

If I've had a stressful day, I always put on an episode of Doc Martin because the theme song calms me and I drift off to sleep quite contentedly.

hobbledyhoy · 03/02/2023 20:18

Wood pigeons on a summer's night, reminds me of growing up in the countryside and brings a feeling of safety and being looked after.

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 03/02/2023 20:18

This is VERY specific but finishing work at 5.30am on a Sunday morning in the summer. Going home and sunny, clear blue sky but still cool oiy. It's super quiet, hardly anyone around, maybe someone on the walk of shame, maybe someone cleaning the street, maybe the odd builder or someone else working. It feels very calm and quite special to see this part of the day.

Tangerinie · 03/02/2023 20:18

TV programs including Murder She Wrote, Midsomer Murders, Downton Abbey, Father Dowling mysteries

The smell of jacket potatoes and coffee (reminds me of cafés my mum used to take me to when I was little).

Calling in sick! I hate deciding to call in sick to work and I almost never do it. But once I've done it, I instantly feel relieved

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 03/02/2023 20:19

The sound of big bens chimes as replicated on my mums wall clock (which was passed down from my grandfather). Always reminds me of being a small child and safe and warm.

blueshoes · 03/02/2023 20:20

Sleeping in the cold room under the covers with my warm furry meter long 2 litre hot water bottle on my tummy.

Cost of Living crisis has it advantages.

Findingapath · 03/02/2023 20:20

Downtown abbey intro music instantly sends a wave of calm over me

Cryingbutstilltrying · 03/02/2023 20:21

Whenever I was up in the night with baby dc, I was always comforted by looking out and seeing other houses with lights on. Just knowing that it was 3am and quiet but there were other people up too.
I really love the first cup of tea by myself in the morning, no one else up, even better if it coincides with sunrise. Looking out at the garden and all the colours coming to life.
The sound of rain drumming on the skylight in my bedroom. DH hates it but it reminds me of caravan holidays as a child, knowing I was all safe inside.
Small moments of peace and comfort, now I want it to rain 😁

SallyWD · 03/02/2023 20:21

This is a weird one but the sound of an old fashioned, ticking clock. It really reminds me of being at my grandparents house as a child. Takes me back to that feeling of being loved and nurtured.

cindylawless · 03/02/2023 20:21

It's going to sound creepy, but other peoples misfortune and trouble.

It makes me feel like the limelight isn't on me, and I can safely watch from afar from my little hole.

I'm not a criminal, just to clarify Confused

FettleOfKish · 03/02/2023 20:22

A podcast episode that my oldest friend recorded years ago.

I'd never tell him, but when I was going through a bad time a few years ago I must have listened to it dozens of times, I'd put it on to fall asleep to as his voice just rattling away in the background brought me comfort.

Yes to.tne caravan holiday rain! Also going to guide Camp and hearing the rain on the canvas

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/02/2023 20:23

The Victoria line is the noisiest and most bone shaking tube line, but I have been using it so long that the screeching and rattling have become like a soothing lullaby to me.

FettleOfKish · 03/02/2023 20:24

Also, something like the theme tune to Eastenders or Corrie, but specifically heard from another room. Reminds me of sleeping at my Grandparents, they had an open-plan staircase with my room at the top and the lounge at the bottom. I'd be in bed and they'd be watching TV downstairs.

Neverknowinglysensible · 03/02/2023 20:24

Silence.
Watching bats flying on late summer evenings.
Watching someone else ironing- bloody never happens anymore, but I can dream!
Hearing rain on the window when I’m in bed and knowing, smugly, that we’ve finally had the leak fixed, so I can snuggle down and not be running around with buckets and towels.

Msmunet · 03/02/2023 20:25

Hearing church bells on a Sunday
a grandfather clock ticking
Waves crashing on the beach
Birds singing early morning whilst im snuggled up in bed

Reading alot of these posts I can imagine what is being described and feel instantly soothed

Lovely thread
