I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

Paid 55p for a small tin yesterday

As someone wrote a month ago, Co-op is selling a bundle of fish chips n peas for about £6 but it's not cod in the fingers or fillets, just a mush of unknown 'white' fish. I'd rather spend £4 on two pieces of cod fillet from M&S frozen gluten free breadcrumbed range. At least you can see proper flakes of fish.

Today, after looking on Amazon website and comparing prices, I rang Screwfix to ask about a 16oz claw hammer. I was quoted £44.95. 😮👀
Given that Amazon had a well known brand costing £9.49 with over 5k positive reviews, I questioned why Screwfix was screwing its customers. No wonder the High Street is suffering closures.

Lampzade · 20/03/2023 10:30

These prices are scary.
I am definitely more careful about what I eat

Flapjack bars for DC snacks...have been £1 for ages then last week went to £1.25 overnight. So a 25% increase.

Quote for some work in our house, last has exactly same work done in 2021 and now the quote for the same job is 50% higher than we last paid. Builder is a friend so he's not trying to fleece us!

MaggieMagpie357 · 20/03/2023 11:51

I've seen it all now - Dove Deodorant 200ml spray, £4.50 in Tesco! Was £2 last week. An actual disgrace.

That seems steep for Screwfix, they are 90% of the time cheaper than online and the other major hardware stores.

550g of Biston Gravy Granules - £5.50

Yup - £5.50!!

The government have been telling us for several months now that inflation is running at around 10% but that the cost of our weekly groceries is up by around 16-17%.
I'd love to know where I can go and get my weekly shop for only 17% more than I could 12 months ago.
I use an app that pays me a few pence for each shopping receipt I scan (although, it used to be 0.5% of the value of the receipt and now it's dropped to only 1p per £10 spent), but I can still access scans of my receipts from at least 18 months ago, and I'm seeing all the price increases week on week, that you've all been pointing out.
5 weeks ago, a box of 24 Oxos was £2.50 in Asda, the following week they rocketed to £4.00 (60% increase). I suspect no-one bought any because 2 weeks later they came down to £3.30, which is still 80p (32%) more than they originally were.
A pack of 6 tins of Asda branded dog food back in November 21 was £2.70 and by February 22 it had increased to £4.10, an increase of £1.40 (52%) and has increased even further since, although I've stopped buying it and soak dried food instead (which I buy direct from the manufacturer at around £55 for 18kg - premium brand, even that has gone up but only by 9%).
And those are just a couple of items I've seen ridiculous price hikes on.

But basically, I went shopping on Sunday and bought exactly the same items as I'd bought on 19 September (exactly 6 months ago), the two baskets had 16 items and their respective prices were £24.31 and £39.85, that's an increase of £15.54 (64%), everything was store branded, there were no big brands at all.
Some of the individual items had doubled (or more) in price in the 6 months, so I'd sincerely like to know where prices have risen by 'only' 17%.

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

My son used to work for an exclusive chocolate company and he tells me that the reason we like Easter egg chocolate better than bar chocolate is down to the thickness. Because it's thinner, it appears to melt quicker on the tongue and 'seems' to taste better, even though exactly the same chocolate is used for both bars and hollow eggs.

To the person asking about an alternative to Gold Blend Decaf coffee, I've only drunk decaf for around 20yrs and always used to stick to either Kenko or Gold Blend, depending on which was on the best offer, but in more recent years, and especially with all the price hikes in the last 2 or 3 years, I've found that the 'gold-type' own brand decaf in Asda, Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury's are pretty respectable. Last week I paid £2.75 for a 200g jar in Asda, so it's around half the price of the branded ones.

Plastic version costs £1.6 in Superdrug. Sorry, I can't afford to be eco friendly with these prices.

We went to our local pub for dinner on Friday - it was nice. Nothing fancy though. Kids had fish and chips, I had a pleasant mushroom veggie burger and DH had a beef burger. Soft drinks and one pudding and it came to £95! WTF?! It wasn’t like a fancy special night out, it was just a normal pub dinner.
We’re fairly high earners but there’s no way we’d go out more than once a month at that price. And I love pizza express pizzas but only get them when they’re half price in Sainsbury’s. £5.50 and it’s tiny!

Yes, we used to buy it quite often for our chickens but have stopped. Even the cheap cheap tins are not cheap any more. Frozen is much more economical.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/03/2023 16:39

£3.90 for squeezy mayonnaise
