Most daftly overpriced thing you've seen lately?

I've really fancied trying these Bueno eggs, finally saw them in Tesco and nearly collapsed in shock at the price. £2.75!! For a few tiny little eggs. I think not. The delights of the Bueno egg will remain a mystery to me.

What have you seen lately that's ridiculously overpriced? I know everything but maybe like the little treats you might have bought that are now so out of budget that you won't buy them even if you can afford too.

Hey @kateandme yeah actually maybe your right it’s just the packaging that’s smaller - but thanks for the tips on where else have them 👍🏻 I appreciate it xx 👍🏻

PG Tips decaffeinated 70 bags, "standard" price was around £2.40, "offer" price (which was common) was around £2.00, now £3.95 in the Co-op! 😨

If you have a Waitrose, DH reckons that the Essential Waitrose 80 packs of decaf teabags for £1.70 are the best of the lot.

Wouldn’t it? But you know what- it wouldn’t surprise me, nothing is shocking me much more atm! 🤯🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🙄🙄🙄

Cadbury mini eggs, last year 100g bag £1, this year 80g bag £1.25! (And that was in Lidl).

I was thinking something like that.

It's maybe an idea for an app, if anybody's capable of that.

Check out trolley.co.uk it shows the prices of the different items at different stores. I was looking for throat sweets the other day and it also included Savers prices which surprised me as usually with things like this it's just the 5 shops.

I compared the tiny Cadbury and nestle eggs in Asda earlier. Cadburys were 96-98g, nestle smarties are 112g. So i think Cadbury’s have reduced the size.

Strepsils in Tesco Express yesterday were £5.90 ... I decided to put up with my sore throat instead :)

Catspyjamas17 · 12/02/2023 07:23

I paid £15 for a block of cheese and some crackers in a deli the other day. It was a fair old chunk of cheese, very nice cheese indeed and the crackers were lovely too, but still a bit of a shock.

I wonder if there's a limit that companies can get away with apropos shrinkflation; or if, like Mrs Twitt's walking stick, they persist a tiny bit at a time, they can get away with it, regardless of how far they push it.

I suppose the relative few who do see their game (as on this thread) will just shake their heads at their audacity and refuse to buy their now-much-tinier products for the old price; but the majority won't be that astute to notice it, or might have an idea but will sigh, think 'que sera' and still buy it anyway.

My DH was given a £100 Fortnum & Mason voucher as a spot bonus from work. We thought we might be able to use it for afternoon teas, but no chance - it would barely have paid for one of us. Everything on their website was 3 times the price I'd consider reasonable. In the end he bought a scarf (which at least will have longevity) and a few bars of very average overpriced chocolate.

Pedallleur · 12/02/2023 09:24

A Prada white cotton man's vest at £700 reviewed the other week

And (sorry to keep adding to this thread) whiskas cat sachets have been out of stock for ages.. now back on the shelves, new packaging.. each sachet is now 85g instead of 100g before, plus still more expensive for a pack than last year!

Thanks, I'll look at that. I've just run out of dishwasher tablets. That's something it's always worth shopping around for.

shit!aldi and lidl are really starting to let themselves down i have noticed

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/02/2023 07:32

To be fair, branded goods (other than their own) are never their focus - they're the equivalent of the Indian restaurant that offers burger and chips in the bottom corner of the menu to avoid the one person who doesn't like anything else from deterring a whole group from eating there.

Non-in-house brands are such a small percentage of their business that they likely have much less leverage with the big manufacturers than Tesco or Asda do, when it comes to rising prices and hard bargaining.

The whole idea of Lidl & Aldi is that they offer cheaper 'just as good' alternatives of almost everything - and actively feature/promote them, unlike the other supermarkets do with their own cheaper versions that they put quietly out of the way on the non-eye-level shelves; so they would never be the obvious place to go looking for the cheapest prices on expensive branded foods.
