Thread 4 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 13/01/2023 17:17

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 & 2 & 3.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Oh, so when she referred to AIBU she meant back there? Arf!

Britinme · 27/01/2023 20:45

@DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry - oh no, I don't for one moment suggest that you should - just wanted to note how it struck me.

duc748 · 27/01/2023 20:47

I actually had a look at the Scotland thread there (don't think I'd ever even been in there before), and at the end there was a terse reminder from the mods not to talk about That Kind Of Thing, and new guidelines would be issued end of Feb. So more of the same old, same old.

Thanks, duc (may I call you duckie?) - that has properly made me laugh.

duc748 · 27/01/2023 21:20

Yeah, it's moribund. And pathetic. This shit matters.

I prefer my old handle, really! 😛

Madamedefargelikescrows · 27/01/2023 22:34

I think it's incredibly sad that they can't talk about "that stuff". Seriously, if someone doesn't question the new laws that they're trying to pass in Scotland in the aftermath of this week then you seriously need to have a word with yourself. I'm not even talking about binning the law altogether, but the fact that amendments that would have prevented this were voted down. You can be full on TRA and still think that that is problematic. I would have thought anyway.

I'm also pretty sure that if there hadn't been so much public outcry he would still be in a women's prison. I saw today that the paedophile, Katie Dolatowski, is currently there. This is after two arrests for assaulting a young girl, filming another, while out on bail, or whatever it was, taking on an alibi to spend months living in a women's refuge claiming to be a victim of assault and then when sent to a men's prison, as was right, assaulting and battering another prisoner who was much smaller than him, because Katie is 6 foot five inches. And now he's in a women's prison because the public was less aware that this shit was going down and so he gets to live among women. Great.

There are also imprisoned rapists and murderers who are talking about coming out as transgender so they can get moved to women's prisons (this is in Scotland). On the one hand, Sturgeon is right, men don't have to pretend to be something they're not so that they can harm women. On the other, that doesn't mean that when you give them the chance to do just that they won't take that chance and run with it wearing a wig and baggy leggings.

I don't think any of the above are actually transgender but if you are so free and easy with the law that you refuse to recognise the dangers in getting rid of any safeguarding when it comes to pronouncing a brand new gender.

Madamedefargelikescrows · 27/01/2023 22:37

Currently wearing my "Woman: Adult Human Female" t-shirt and thinking about the time I was in Bayonne in France. It was our first day after travelling for a number of hours by rail, sea and more rail and as we were getting to the rooms we were going to stay in it absolutely pissed it down to a degree that I've never seen before or since. We got to the room and along came the most insane thunderstorm I've ever seen with fantastic lightning. This went on for about half an hour max. Within another half an hour (again, max) you'd never have known that it had rained at all. Not tropical, just the south of France but it was epically wonderful.

StephanieSuperpowers · 27/01/2023 22:38

They are adults though and they're choosing to accept that they can't talk about this. It seems an insane restriction for a grown up to agree to to me but what can you say?

MmePoppySeedDefage · 27/01/2023 23:17

Some things that entertained me in an ironic sort of way. What I don't understand about TRSOH people like in That Place is that they must see the newspaper headlines like those shown in Aja's tweet: does that not give them any pause for thought?

In 2015 I signed a letter calling for trans women to be housed in the female estate. But that does not include male sexual predators who falselyy* self ID to insert themselves into a space with vulnerable women.

Sorry if it's a bit difficult to follow. I am in my iPad and I can't make it clear. There are 3 different snippets.

Kucinghitam · 27/01/2023 23:54

Oh gorgeous Kasper! @CyanCrystalViolet He really has such an adorable round face.

And I like @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn's demanding robin. It always amazes me how "tame" they seem. We have a resident robin who follows us around when we're gardening, looking out for little wriggly snacks.

It is tricky, this reading thing, have another go:
helenskywalker · Yesterday 00:33

This is not a drive by: there's a message on the old place in ATBU. If you want to please read it, it's meant honestly and without malice.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 28/01/2023 06:33

That is not an honest post. It a drive by. If you want to say anything, say it here.

Why would anyone go up a dark alleyway on your invitation?

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 28/01/2023 06:38

Though if what you want to say relates to THAT topic, say it on the Women's rights general conversations thread or even the What gender heresy caused you to be thrown out of Facebook groups? thread, and let people keep this one for friendly cats and dogs and food and tropical rain. And other friendly stuff.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/01/2023 07:42

I would observe we cannot control what others think or do, only how we react to it.

With that bring on more excellent kitty and food pics.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 28/01/2023 07:48

Thanks Gin, wise words. No pics, but Oscar is gazing at me very intently and I suspect he's picturing food. And the lack of it.

Kucinghitam · 28/01/2023 08:01

I concur @Ginmonkeyagain. Also, heat death of the universe.

Today for your delectation I offer something that at least has a vegetarian friendly option.

A Malaysian Indian specialty: banana leaf rice.

When you sit down at your table, a banana leaf is placed in front of you. Immediately, the “basic” items are ladled onto your leaf - rice, poppadoms, fresh vegetable pickles and a couple of vegetable curries. Additionally, a communal vat of dhal and another basic curry (metal pots) is provided for the table.

Then a slightly alarming procession of waiters surround you, offering “extras” such as chicken rendang, mutton curry, fried fish, grilled curried squid, marinated quail etc. (You may have to fend them off quite firmly if you don’t want a tower of extras).

Then you slather your rice with the provided sauces and dig in. Traditionally you eat this with your hand. (I don’t usually because turmeric stains are a bugger to get out of fingernails). Top ups of rice and poppadoms are freely available if you are a bottomless pit like my brother.

When you have finished, you fold your banana leaf away from you, in half along its spine.

The “basic” banana leaf meal is typically only about RM8-10 (around £1.75).

Looks amazing.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 28/01/2023 08:09

It looks so amazing - I follow James Wong on twitter and his posts about Singapore reference the food there on his visits as well as the amazing planting - taking that and your images and descriptions together I'm wondering just why humans choose to live here in the grey cold north. Not that I dislike potato cakes and poached eggs, but somehow it isn't the same . . .

angelico53 · 28/01/2023 08:28

Good morning, threadsters!

It's so childish for the old place tp proscribe these discussions, and as the news moves on and people wake up to what's been happening below their radar, it looks worse and worse. TRSOH my arse. Censorship, pile-ons, thought crimes and misosyny are unlikely to prove right, whatever path history takes.

But fuck that! Today's my 70th and already having a brilliant time, even without opening the many bottles that have appeared. Also a rose, variety "Fab @ 70".

(Not to mention a 55" TV due in an ahour or two, which I am also determined to enjoy!)

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 28/01/2023 08:30

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, angelico! May it be an excellent one!

Gonners · 28/01/2023 09:12

Good morning, angelico, and Happy Birthday young man!

Dotellhimpike · 28/01/2023 09:19

Happy birthday Angelico, 70 is a damn fine age.

Tricyrtis2022 · 28/01/2023 09:33
