Thread 4 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 13/01/2023 17:17

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 & 2 & 3.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Yes, I was interested in that. Is it perhaps concerns it could be abused?

CrikeyOReally · 21/01/2023 10:04

Elderberry "btw, usually I never compare anything to 1930s Europe, because it's disprespectful and self indulgent to do so, but we are getting a clear demonstration of how theory-driven totalitarianism seizes power by denying facts, and changing language, and forbidding any discussion of its actions."

That argument works both ways.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/01/2023 10:09

denying facts, and changing language, and forbidding any discussion

Both ways? Really?

Kucinghitam · 21/01/2023 10:10

That argument works both ways.

Well, I'd agree that argument actually works all ways.

In other words, it doesn't matter what the topic is (climate change, Brexit, vaccination, gendered souls not overriding biological reality, evolution, the Big Bang), the important thing is that humanity ought not fall down the path of denying facts, changing language and forbidding discussion (also putting your head in the sand etc etc).

Both ways? Really?

Hah, that was more succinct than what I said! But exactly!

The attitude of 'I don't know anything about this and won't read about it but the witches are wrong and must be silenced and expelled' is now being supplemented by 'how dare the witches complain about the way they were abused on the threads I didn't read so I know it never happened because I didn't see it'.

All of them nice, kind, intelligent people, but they don't want to know about life outside the bubble.

Catspyjamas17 · 21/01/2023 11:04

I'm not for banning discussion, but please also give people some credit for having different interests from you and not actually wanting to discuss every serious important issue under the sun online in great depth, here, or on JTT rather than seeing it as some kind of capitulation or failure in life on their part. People each go to JTT for very different reasons.

I sometimes introduce or contribute to more serious, upsetting or controversial topics on JTT but 99% of the time I want to chat light-heartedly about Football or Happy Valley or Pottery Throw Down. I hardly ever venture into UK News or Issues and generally lean towards frivolity and whimsy these days.

Personally I don't even watch/read the news much, and spend far less time on social media than I used to so am definitely not up to date with the latest position on gender identity law or anything else in particular. My brian is full enough and important things already fall out as it is while just focusing on family, work and hobbies without getting into indepth discussions on my phone.

I was sorry to note that piMan has left, and no contact mail left either.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 21/01/2023 11:15

Catspy, I don't have a massive problem with people not wanting to discuss things (though I'm not making that 1930s comparison lightly) but I do object to the claim that we weren't abused on that board. Thread after thread got closed as the gang started it up again.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/01/2023 11:28

Guys, it's all getting a bit PFJ vs JPF really.

Tricyrtis2022 · 21/01/2023 11:37

Eh?

Peoples Front of Judea/Judean Peoples Front. Life of Brian ref.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/01/2023 11:44

Indeed. The very similar left wing groups who despise each other over small differences in approach and policy.

Tricyrtis2022 · 21/01/2023 11:50

@angelico53, ah thanks, got it now.

Winterborne74 · 21/01/2023 11:50

Having said that, the way dissenters on one issue have been treated by a supposedly tolerant forum reminds me of Emo Phillips’ joke about religion:

Didn't know that, he seemed a top guy.

Kucinghitam · 21/01/2023 12:14

Thing is, I can understand not being interested in (say) a thread about beer widgets on a forum. I can understand being upset by a thread about beer widgets on the forum. I can even understand being upset that there are posters on the forum who want to discuss beer widgets.

What I struggle to understand (help me out here) is that if beer widget posters decamp to another forum, and once there discuss whatever the fuck [whether it's beer widgets or not being able to discuss beer widgets previously or why there aren't white dog poos anymore] rocking up to the other forum to complain about whatever the fuck the beer widget posters are discussing there.

And possibly (if anybody knows) going back to the original forum to signpost and complain about the departed beer widget posters discussing whatever the fuck on the new forum.

Just. Why?

@CitronVert22

helenskywalker · 21/01/2023 12:27

Because the message I found specifically referred to a conversation I and others had had about our children, Kuc. I'm not a hypocrite and I have never, secretly or otherwise, slagged off your parenting. Even under the impenetrable disguise of not mentioning you or a thread by name.

Winterborne74 · 21/01/2023 12:29

I can help you out here, Kuc. As I understand the rules, exiled posters continuing to talk about attitudes at their former internet home and
is outrageous. But cross forum quotes to justify and drum up further hostility at the old place, with commentary saying that the exiled won’t be missed is absolutely fine. And it is very mean of you to suggest any hypocrisy, because the exiled deserve it, and the exilers don’t. The exiled caused the situation by refusing to shut up.

Kucinghitam · 21/01/2023 12:37

@helenskywalker I'm afraid I still don't quite get it, because (if I understand correctly) you have chosen to come and read this particular thread on this forum in order to see the offensive post(s), when you could have, well, not. Unless somebody on here deliberately sent you a link? If so, that would be very shit-stirring indeed and I would condemn that.

I mean, I don't deliberately go and read Petrolheads or BeerGuts or GunNuts; I wouldn't even know what threads were on there. And if a bunch of former posters had gone to Petrolheads, they could start a thread slagging me off or even threatening to cut my heart out and drink beer out of it, and I simply wouldn't know.

angelico53 · 21/01/2023 13:23

I will risk being called whatever they want to call us/me, not because I don't give a toss, because I do and miss some old friends. What I won't do is go to a forum where my views are not acceptable to either the owner, the much-sainted johnny, yeah, or the denizens.

It has been an eye opener to me, for sure.

SinnerBoy · 21/01/2023 13:25

Am I correct to gather that someone over there has linked to this thread and they're all having a character assassination circle jerk?

Kucinghitam · 21/01/2023 13:34

This Surely Cannot Be Real?!

It does sound real. Weird situation to be in.

I was in a relationship with a guy who was really picky about food and once I told him that rabbit meat was chicken and he didn't question it, just ate the meal. I told him later that he'd eaten rabbit and he was quite upset about it.
