Thread 4 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 & 2 & 3.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

It's Doves Farm organic, so heavy-duty stuff. I don't use wholemeal flour in sourdough normally, just strong white.

ChezKuc we've finished my baking for Chinese New Year just in the nick of time! Took several weekends (as well as me by myself today), got the whole family involved. We jokingly shout "child labour!" when we want the DC to come and help with something, but of course they're very happy to help when it comes to eating cookie dough baking.

They look fabulous! And very time-consuming!

Ithangyew Some of them are indeed an absolute faff, which is why we only make them once a year.

The white ones are made with tapioca flour and coconut milk, flavoured with pandan leaf. IRL they're teeny-tiny (about the size of a thumb joint) and made by laborious pressing the dough into carved wooden moulds. Fortunately the DC seem to really enjoy doing this. Before serving, each one has to be dotted with a little red eye-spot (for maximum auspiciousness). The DC like doing this too, so that's tomorrow's job.

The pastries are pineapple tarts. These take a zillion years because first I have to make the pineapple paste/jam which involves hours of gentle stirring of minced pineapple flavoured with cinnamon and cloves. The pastry is a fairly standard rich sweetened shortcrust.

The round balls are almond cookies. Quick and easy. Traditionally they'd be made with ground peanuts, but I am lazy and buy ready-ground almonds from the supermarket.

The rabbits are just shortbread, two flavours. Because it'll be the Year of the Rabbit.

I fear I may have oversold them - they're actually quite hard (brittle) and dry! I always feel I have to warn people before they take a bite Although I am biased and find the mild coconutty flavour absolutely delicious!

Wot-I-reckon is it's an East Asian /SE Asian cuisine thing, in which the meal is appreciated not just for its flavour but for having a wide range of textures*. So you have a hard dry cookie, but serve it alongside a moist jammy tart, and a slightly salty nutty crumbly biscuit, with a fragrant hot tea to wash them down.

*This is why we eat weird stuff like birds' nests and sea cucumbers.

Mmmmm. If only we had Wonkavision, and Kuc had enough to pass over to us.

They look awesome, Kuc. Being born in the year of the rabbit, I feel they're all morally mine and you should parcel them up immediately.

Well if there are any ones that fell on the floor, got a bit burned or are otherwise not fit for the display, I can happily take them if you wonkavision them over.

Somebody definitely needs to invent Wonkavision!

The thread that chilled me was the one that briefly touched on this subject, then rapidly reached a consensus of be nice and let the children instruct the older generation.
