Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Fantastic letter, can you copy it to your local MP too?
Physiotherapists can make a good amount privately, and work to her own schedule, so hope she will be ok.
I saw a Physio for a short appt a couple of times at the local surgery, but she left after about 6 months.
The govt is determined to break the NHS and all who work in it.

Dotellhimpike · 09/01/2023 19:00

Sorry this is happening to you @SqueakyDinosaur you have every right to be bloody angry, and fantastic letter. Not much to add except maybe consider selling a follow up letter after shitting in the envelope?

duc748 · 09/01/2023 19:21

Great letter, SD.

Here's a weird AIBU:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4716460-drinking-water?page=1

Tricyrtis2022 · 10/01/2023 13:08

That seems like a strange thing to focus on, for sure.

Britinme · 10/01/2023 14:09

Seems weird to me to care about what somebody else chooses to drink, though I have to say I don't think I could be in a relationship with a heavy boozer.

SinnerBoy · 10/01/2023 14:10

Our house is freezing, we're having a new back door and two windows fitted. I'm hiding in the back bedroom, on the computer. The door is shut, which is helping.

IReallyLikeCrows · 10/01/2023 15:43

Water person is odd. I don't care what people drink unless its excessive alcohol and then I feel deeply uncomfortable and would definitely find it hard to have any sort of meaningful relationship with them but that's because drunks are generally either boring or scary.

SinnerBoy · 10/01/2023 15:55

Yes, I can understand not being happy with a boozer, but not liking fruit juice? It's more than passing odd!

Anyway, the doors and windows are in! They have some trims to finish off, which will happen tomorrow, it seems. It's a barn door, complicated locking arrangement.

duc748 · 10/01/2023 17:15

Wonderful prog on forest elephants on BBC (fill in for the snooker finishing early). If we can't save these wonderful animals from poachers, what hope is there?

Britinme · 10/01/2023 17:25

I've started a thread in the Family Planning topic - not sure if it's in the right place, but this is it: www.mumsnet.com/talk/family_planning/4717046-texas-lawmakers-consider-restrictions-on-teen-birth-control

IReallyLikeCrows · 10/01/2023 20:32

So Casper is no more and has taken to his new name as though it was always supposed to be that in the first place. I like my animals to have people's names and have passed this on to my friend Snoop whose greyhound is called Seamus - he's Irish. The rescue people had called him James which wasn't a name he'd grown up with so I said let's do it in Irish and Seamus is Irish James.

So, the lovely wee boy has been out and about and is incredibly difficult to take photos of because he's always on the move. Running around the flat is his second favourite thing is running around the flat. His first favourite thing is being all over me settling down every so often but generally when the phone is just out of reach. I get hold of it and off he goes moving again and headbutting the camera just when I think I'm about to get a photo. But! I just got one. It's far from perfect but it gives you an idea of him. I've no doubt I'll get better photos of him and he is such a pretty boy. I present you with Django Reinhardt.

Shock Casper is a person’s name! I know two human Caspers, plus my Kasper who is named after Borgen’s Kasper Juul. Django Reinhardt is also lovely though, and he looks like a beauty. I love black void cats.

Gonners · 10/01/2023 21:15

Arf! My brain completely mis-saw that photo and mistook the inside of his right ear for a lolling tongue. So for just a moment there I saw a one-eyed, one-eared monster! Django is a fine name. Obviously all cats need surnames - our Spanish cat had two, obviously (neither of them either mine or MrG's). The vet just rolled his eyes.

duc748 · 10/01/2023 22:28

I'm watching the Masters snooker, and extraordinary scenes as the players come across wasp attack. Play stops at a crucial stage as Mark Williams literally has to dance around the table to avoid it. Then it attacks one of the cameramen, and the referee ends up trying to swipe it on the camera man's back. Just one of those great moments of live TV.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/01/2023 22:42

@Britinme It looks a bit quiet over there, and seems to be mainly people trying to conceive rather than general topics. Might be better to get it moved to Chat or one of the Feminism sections.

IReallyLikeCrows · 11/01/2023 02:15

I've not given Francis's full name which is St Francis of Assisi although he also gets called Frankie Boy which sometimes becomes Frankie Boyle but mostly he's a saint. Django Reinhardt is because I've always wanted that name because I adore him and his music makes me happy. The next cat I get will probably be Stephan Grappelli.

I'm in love with Django already. He's an absolute dote and I'm so glad I said I'd home him. I've wanted a void for quite some time. He does have murder mittens which I'm hoping he'll learn to keep under control. I'm a very lucky cat mother.

Thanks @Binturongs - I've emailed the mods and asked them to move it.

angelico53 · 11/01/2023 08:14

@IReallyLikeCrows what a great little creature - and the name is perfect. It embodies the humour and daft vivacity of both kittens and the great Django.

One of the very first bands I played in was modeled on the Quintette du Hot Club de France, except we had two violinists (one of whom went on to moderate fame and fortune). I've been playing a lot of gypsy jazz recently. There's something cheering about playing what's called "La Pompe" - a particular way of comping on rhythm guitar.

A lovely clip from the 30s, I think, of the Quintette:

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/01/2023 08:58

We have a mannin to deal with a persistent kitchen sink blockage. He has decided that whilst he had shifted the blockage the internal pipes need reconfiguring and replacing to avoid it happening again.

We have already had to buy a new washing machine this month - looks sadly at bank account 😩

Kucinghitam · 11/01/2023 09:06

looks sadly at bank account 😩

Oh god, I hear you! January already feels 14958765 days long, without the agonising wait for payday.

IReallyLikeCrows · 11/01/2023 09:24

@angelico53 thank you for that clip, it's joyous! I love that you played in a band modelled on them. That really is something.

weaseleyes · 11/01/2023 09:33

I hear you on the January bank account woes. This week, being already overdrawn of course, I have had to have something horrible done to the car, there's a man coming to fix a dislodged gutter on Friday, an electrician is coming on Thursday, and I'm putting off getting an extortionate damp survey done as I don't see how I'll be able to afford whatever they suggest - probably extensive repointing. Meanwhile the dehumidifier continues to do its sterling work, but seems to cost about a pound a day to run and I still effectively live in an aquarium.

StephanieSuperpowers · 11/01/2023 09:38

I'm starting a new course this month. Just a professional development one, nothing too exciting. The application process started last July and the fees became due on Christmas week. Of course I don't have a grand to hand before payday with that kind of notice over Christmas.

Why so sudden? Everything else took months to progress and now that money is due, it's all NOW NOW NOW.
