Another night ready Julia Donaldson books and another frustrating non-rhymey rhyme.

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme. Neither do plant and can't.

Anyone else??

Certain and curtain rhyme for me

But they also have Adam and atom as homophones there, the crazy splitters.

Also doody. As in, soldiers doing their doody.

Which always makes me smirk childishly to myself.

Now I feel the urge to youtube Americans rhyming shone and dawn.

'how would you teach learners the difference in pronunciation between 'put' and 'putt'

Answer: they sound the exact bloody same so don't sweat it, kidz.

They both rhyme for me but they rhyme with aunt rather than ant 😂

Err....aunt and ant are pronounced exactly the same

Another toughy found in Superworm as you cant rhyme a word with one that sounds identical

Plant and can't rhyme in a scots accent (JD) born in London but had kids in Scotland. Scarf and Giraffe don't though.

In my accent aunt is pronounced exactly the same as ant.

Quartz2208 · 13/10/2022 22:04

Julia Donaldson is from London and in that accent they do rhyme.

I can see why in some though they dont - but isnt that the whole point of you say neither and I say neither song!

sirtun and kertin seem to me liked they'd rhyme.

I've never knowingly set foot in Lancashire though.

There’s not a “London” accent though, is there? Sidcup, Whitechapel, Pimlico and Surbiton have very little in common.

Charlie Cooks Favourite Book is a pain in the arse as well. Both DH and DS say "buk" and I say "booook".

They make me read it and howl with laughter every time.

So unfair

In Scotland we don't teach two separate oo sounds as both are the same and we don't pronounce any 'a' as 'ar' .

OrangePomander · 13/10/2022 22:05

Thanks@EndlessMagpies

My kids definitely learnt to read despite phonics lessons, not because of them!

Aunt and any DO NOT RHYME

Because THEY ARE THE SAME WORD

Why is everyone saying 'Yes they rhyme, no they don't' It's all dependant on your accent. There. Finished.

to be fair I'm sniggering a little along with them and would also encourage you to say 'boooook' as often as poss.

Because it's a light-hearted thread.
