Scarf and Giraffe don't rhyme

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:26

Another night ready Julia Donaldson books and another frustrating non-rhymey rhyme.

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme. Neither do plant and can't.

Anyone else??

They might not rhyme for lots of people but they do for me with my southern accent.

TheOrangeOrange · 13/10/2022 21:30

They rhyme for me... I say can't and plant and they both rhyme with ant 🐜

VoyageInTheDark · 13/10/2022 21:31

Yep they don't rhyme for me either

friedbrainrightnow · 13/10/2022 21:31

Some English people pronounce can’t like caaaarrrrn’t though so I can see why it might not in some accents.

unnumber · 13/10/2022 21:31

Plant can't yes - I say bath not bath

Scawrf giraf not for me, but lots of people say scawf girawf

Could plot it on a map

Misscbu17 · 13/10/2022 21:31

They most definitely rhyme for me and I’m lost as to those who say otherwise but I guess it’s accent dependant 🤷🏻‍♀️

NameChangeLifeChange · 13/10/2022 21:29

They rhyme for me. Maybe you’re talking wrong Grin Northern DH has same issue

Nah, northern DH is correct

Plant and can't rhyme for me, so do giraffe and scarf. Regional thing I guess.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:32

You're all wrong. Well...those who disagree with me are wrong.

OP posts:
CuriousCatfish · 13/10/2022 21:33

They don't rhyme in my accent.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:34

Charlie Cooks Favourite Book is a pain in the arse as well. Both DH and DS say "buk" and I say "booook".

They make me read it and howl with laughter every time.

So unfair

OP posts:
OrangePomander · 13/10/2022 21:34

They are very far from rhyming in my (northern) accent

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/10/2022 21:35

Yep been wondering this since I first read it 9 years ago

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:35

Also see look and soot.

Another non-rhyming rhyme

They both rhyme for me too... But they don't rhyme with ant! Grin

Giraffe and scarf also rhyme. Also with laugh.

Does the grass grow mainly on the path in Bath, OP?

They do if you live down south!

I live down South, and they don’t for me or DH.

I suppose that they one day might for our children, so we’ll have to ensure we leave before then.

LoveReallyHurtsWithoutLube · 13/10/2022 21:39

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:37

It’s annoying because northerners don’t say “scaff” - we’re as bound to the ar digraph as everyone else - so we couldn’t ever make scarf and giraffe (of scarf and laugh as she’s guilty of in Stickman) rhyme.

Random789 · 13/10/2022 21:40

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:37

No they don't.

Do, do, do so there.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 13/10/2022 21:40

Plant and can't do rhyme for me. Scottish here.
The others don't though

I discussed this with DH and some of his friends from “back home” recently, and even within his small home-town there was no consensus on many words.

Hood and cooker can have long or short “o” sounds, and each possible combination existed in his small friend group from school.

When DD was learning to read she had a northern accent for a bit (we're very southern) when she'd only learnt ooooooo for oo. Boooook tooooook looooook.

Fooook Grin
