Scarf and Giraffe don't rhyme

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:26

Another night ready Julia Donaldson books and another frustrating non-rhymey rhyme.

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme. Neither do plant and can't.

Anyone else??

They rhyme for Australians!

Yep, they certainly do!

ClaryFairchild · 14/10/2022 04:44

Paws, pause, pours?

Don't forget pores and poor (if you use the singular of most of the others).

Had a Canadian friend who just about dislocated his jaw trying to prove to me they all sounded different. Yeah, jog on mate, and take your "fanny pack" with you....

BlackberryCat · 14/10/2022 04:48

An American friend gave us a book that rhymed carrot with share it. I told her about giraffe and scarf and she couldn’t get it at all.

BlackberryCat · 14/10/2022 04:50

Also, I had a weird discussion with someone who said that drawer isn’t pronounced draw.

LearnerCook · 14/10/2022 05:11

In my part of the North-East they most definitely do not rhyme.

onlythreenow · 14/10/2022 06:47

They rhyme for Australians!

And New Zealanders!

Except that draw and drawer aren’t pronounced the same. Drawer has two syllables. 😁

Agreed. Although it does explain why you see "chest of draws" for sale

ChocolateCrepe · 14/10/2022 08:13

Paws & pause rhyme are pronounced the same but pours is a totally different sound

I’m sat here trying to say ‘the cat has four pours’ and wondering what accent says it like that 🤔 I sound like I’m trying to do a royal accent 😆

Is the test you need folks. At least British/Irish folks.

I think you may be trying it the wrong way round, if your 'pour' has a rhotic pronunciation. Its more that non-rhotics would say 'he paws from a jug'.

Well, it isn't where I am. The second r is audibly pronounced. Just depends on location and accent.

HairyMothballs · 14/10/2022 10:47

Plant rhymes with Ant
Can't rhymes with Aunt
Giraffe with Naff
Scarf with Barf

bumpetybumpy · 14/10/2022 12:02

They rhyme for me.

RiftGibbon · 14/10/2022 12:12

Threeboysandadog · 13/10/2022 23:41

They all rhyme for me

scarf - giraffe
plant - can’t
one - gun
plant - ant

all rhyme

Same. But shone and dawn don't.
Brought up in London, live in the SE. I have travelled a bit and recognise that different accents have different pronunciation. I had difficulties years ago when trying to place a call from the US to home, using an automated service that did not understand my non-rhotic pronunciation.

missmamiecuddleduck · 14/10/2022 12:18

Plant and can't do but not scarf and giraffe

Are you not pronouncing the "r" in pours or are you adding a "r" into your pronunciation of paws and pause?

OceanbreezeSun · 14/10/2022 12:46

They definitely don’t rhyme for me in my northern accent🤣

Peachesndreams · 14/10/2022 13:12

I'm a northerner and this book also had me confused when I first read it out loud. They do rhyme for my southern husband though.

ClaryFairchild · 14/10/2022 13:15

@NC12345665 - no R.

Paws, pause and pours all sound identical in my voice, and giraffe and scarf definitely rhyme!

watcherintherye · 14/10/2022 14:27

In which accent is drawer pronounced anything other than draw?

rhotic accents e.g. Irish accents, Scottish accents, American accents...

there's a big world of accents beyond the SE England!

aldilemonade · 14/10/2022 14:49

Both rhyme for me
