Scarf and Giraffe don't rhyme

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:26

Another night ready Julia Donaldson books and another frustrating non-rhymey rhyme.

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme. Neither do plant and can't.

Anyone else??

Plant and can't do rhyme for me. Scottish here.
The others don't though

Would, erm “c*nt” also rhyme with those for you?

It’s annoying because northerners don’t say “scaff” - we’re as bound to the ar digraph as everyone else - so we couldn’t ever make scarf and giraffe (of scarf and laugh as she’s guilty of in Stickman) rhyme.

Oh another trap I always fall into!

Even though I know it's coming I still struggle to say it as it just sounds wrong!!!

It's wrong when I force a rhyme and wrong when I don't.

I feel like Julia Donaldson has a bit of a monopoly going with books though.
And I HATE Imelda Thornton reading allllll her stories on the yoto player. I'm trying to get my son to sleep and she's screaching out the speaker! Argh

No they don't.

WTF is this a Pantomime. 😂

DorritLittle · 13/10/2022 21:43

They do for me! Northern relatives would agree though.

Emm...no?

Do, do, do so there.

I will not be convinced I am wrong because I am not. So there.

I'm from the south and in my accent it rhymes.

Depends... Do we need to speak in rhymes?

Plant and can't rhyme for me.

Scarf and giraffe - not even close to rhyming.

Here's another combination for consideration: Pain and again. They don't rhyme for me - I say Payne and Agenn.

Emm...no?

OK, that’s interesting. I’m not from the U.K., so am trying to pick my way through accents, and thought (wrongly) that I had a handle on yours.

Shodan · 13/10/2022 21:46

Some English people pronounce can’t like caaaarrrrn’t though

Only pirates, surely?

All the others do rhyme with each other.

Except shone and dawn. What kind of tomfoolery is that?

No they don't.

Yes they do!

We could go round in circles all night, but it's entirely dependent on accent.

OrangePomander · 13/10/2022 21:47

So for the people who do pronounce them to rhyme, does giraffe have an ‘arr’ sound in the middle?

LoveJK · 13/10/2022 21:47

Just asked DH this one, and he thinks that he might use both forms of again in normal speech.

He’s a Northerner who’s worked in a profession in London for decades, so possible oscillates between forms of some words.

Well I mean we don't roll the r like a pirate but loads of kids up here spell can't as 'carnt' when they're learning spelling.

ofwarren · 13/10/2022 21:47

They don't in my northern accent but they will do for people who speak RP.

Namechangedforspooky · 13/10/2022 21:48

I don’t think they rhyme either. I think she is really overrated but I know that is not a popular opinion!

OldEnoughToHaveReadBunty · 13/10/2022 21:48

Yeah they rhyme.

I'm from the Midlands but with no real accent. Certainly not southern.

Gigihulu · 13/10/2022 21:49

They do for south eastern me.

I say plarnt and carnt

Scarf and girarffe

Bunnycat101 · 13/10/2022 21:50

I’d say pl-ar-nt and c-ar-nt so they would rhyme for me

I’d do sc-ar-f and gir- ar-f so would rhyme for me but it feels slightly more awkward.

pain and again wouldn’t rhyme for me. I’m closer to
p-ai-n and a-gen

Misscbu17 · 13/10/2022 21:31

They most definitely rhyme for me and I’m lost as to those who say otherwise but I guess it’s accent dependant 🤷🏻‍♀️

Are you genuinely lost as to those who say they don't rhyme? Have you never heard someone with a northern English accent say plant to rhyme with ant? Or path to rhyme with math? Or grass to rhyme with gas?
